Greg Bedard: Pats coaching staff already at a troubling crossroads

Sunday vs. a Miami team in disarray looms as a huge must-win.
Absolutely.

The Patriots losing Sunday against a hapless Phin team would be the permanent marker writing on the wall that Mayo is not ready for his current role. And the DC, too.

Cuz with injuries and the psychological makeup of the Phins, they are in free fall.

Unfortunately, Mayo was dealt a bad hand. Belichick really left this team in shambles. Years of bad drafting and his refusal to spend to fix the offense when he had a chance has made this one of the least talented teams in the league.

I think picking Brissett was a mistake by Wolf. I think it was important to have a QB who could start while developing Maye, but he was just the wrong guy. His processing speed is too slow for a team with a horrible o-line.

And free agency didn't help since the free agent market sucked and the best players were on defense at positions where the Pats didn't think they needed any help.

I think Mayo needs time to prove he can do it.

Who knows if Mayo is a good coach or not, but few or no coaches could succeed with the hand Mayo has been dealt.
I do wonder how much Mayo had a say in any of the personnel decisions, like Brissett. Mayo makes it seem like he was part of the decision.

dont think bedard said anything which hasn't been noticed and said here... so this shouldn't be much of a surprise to hear it
It we were 3-1, instead of 1-3.. the agenda shifts!

I agree. It should have been Garner Minshew.
Yep! Brissett is AVPs guy. I'm sure mayo was open to him as he was a former patriots player. However everyone is open to things during the honeymoon period.

Heaven forbid, the exact verbiage has not been used... Whatever shall we do...
No one has said anything like it.

Either he has say, which I would tend to assume he does, or he agreed to be a Head Coach for a team he has no personnel say on. Either way he is culpable.

So that excuses Mayo from doing a good job? None of these things being discussed are about the quality of the roster, they are about management of the organization.
The offense is worse, the defense is worse, players are blaming each other, coaches are blaming players the HC is blaming defensive players and offensive scheme PUBLICLY. Thats belichicks fault?

Yeah I think so too Mayo have so much glowing things to say about Brissett who is really earning his 8Mill in QB hits.

You make a good point. I sum it up as he's trying to stay on the collaboration tip. I know the set up is as reported mayo has control of the 53 and Wolf has final say on the roster? Is that the case?

I sum it up as he was willing to agree to any power structure that got him to be a head coach faster.

What bugs me in all of this is our WR's lack of development because of incompetent QB play. IF Pop Douglas - Polk or Thornton was on another Team we would be envious of them. I am convinced if Maye was playing T Thornton would be that guy below from Mac Jones to Brissett talk about lowering the bar.

Mayo is into game 5 of his career. He was left with a crap team. Hence why Belichick was let go. I wouldn't blame any head coach five games into his career.

Mayo hasn't been a good coach thus far, but it isn't all his fault. But Belichick absolutely deserves a decent amount of the blame for the current state of the team. And players were speaking out publicly against the coaching staff for several years. Remember when players like Meyers and Bourne called out Patricia publicly?

I disagree. He knows his stuff and actually does give credit where credit is due. He has praised the Patriots special teams coach, both kickers and players like Peppers, for example.
I guess I am a little sensitive to it. The thumbnails and links all have negative slants so I am not even giving them the click.

I'm neutral about the job Mayo has been doing so far. I don't think coaching is directly responsible for any of our 3 losses this season, nor was he responsible for the 1 win. To me he looks every bit the rookie HC that he is.

Excuses abound for you.
I don’t care how long he has been a HC, he is a HC, there is no trading on a curve. I don’t care what he inherited. I am evaluating him based upon the job he is doing.
The job he is doing so far is terrible. If he improves I will adjust my opinion. That’s how evaluation works.
