I'm not convinced #2 isn't the case. Playing good defense nowadays seems to happen mostly by accident. Look at the Jaguars, that vaunted defense fell apart overnight.

Yeah, this went through my mind as well. It could be that the Pats see the rules changes and development of offenses as an inflection point. Having an overwhelming offense is now a requirement for post season success. That's the only reason I can imagine for going after a "premium" WR now, given the current cap limitations and the fact that the team is putting up points.

Or maybe there's a looming weakness in the health of Gronk and/or JE, or Gordon feels unstable to them.
