Gilmore traded to Carolina

“Troy and I always worked out together on the scout team,” Zolak said. “The day they drafted (corner) Chris Canty, after those first couple of practices, we knew he wasn’t going to be in the league very long. We used to break his back. We just ate him up."

“It got so bad that (head coach) Pete Carroll came into the huddle finally and said, ‘Hey guys, would you mind going away from Canty? Please? We don’t want to shatter his confidence.’ It was comical,” Zolak said. “We’d be laughing at the line of scrimmage, looking for Chris Canty. He couldn’t cover Troy. As it turned out, he couldn’t cover anybody, but it was the funniest thing ever.”

Do you have a source? Never heard of this before....I have a hard time believing Troy would drop balls on purpose.....

I spoke with someone on the inside personally about this. There is slightly more to the story they left out but you get the gist.

"national joke"
"caught on national tv"
"watching all the drama in bewilderment ... more drama ... even his [Bill's] pressers look pathetic"

Just seems kind of ... cynical, yeah?
Typical patriot hater garbage.

You said he paid Troy brown money to drop a few.

Reading comprehension Deus. I was replying to a comment that since they weren't going to pay him more money, then they should have traded him earlier. My guess is they probably would have payed him more money to stay, if he hadn't gotten hurt and missed the end of last year and the beginning of this year. However, he did get hurt and he did miss time and he hasn't shown he is healthy and can play. So the Patriots decided not to sign him to a long term contract or give him lots more money to play.

It is just sad, if they had given him a huge new contract, most of the people here *****ing about it would be here *****ing that they gave a huge contract to a guy who was injured and hasn't been able to play for most of a year.
My reading comprehension is fine. You're just tossing it against the wall.

Ty Laws cousin’s barber?
ha. I mean I'm not going to reveal. You don't have to believe. Either way the point was those guys humiliated Canty. Just reminiscing about the old days.

It was reported on the radio. Apparently he will play for them for $7 mil and not us or Bill asked him to play for less than $7 mil given we literally have zero cap space which is unfathomable in a year that we had oodles of money to spend.
From what Bedard said he will not play for more money in Carolina but Carolina are entertaining the possibility of an extension next year if he plays well. And Bill was not entertaining an extension next year and was asking Gilmore to rework his contract to give them flexibility.

he talks about it at the 7:02 mark

Yup, the entire NFL is laughing. Lil Steven is a national joke. They caught Bill picking his teeth with a pencil on national tv.

I'm just watching all the drama in bewilderment. Next week, Wickersham's book comes out. More drama. Unfortunately, Bill is 8-12 since 2019, so even his pressers look pathetic. Not winning reduces exponentially what you can get away with.
An area that I would agree casts shade on the current BB iteration of the Patriots is the makeup of the staff. An organization that becomes too insular, where the majority of the senior and middle management are "grown" internal to that organization and may tend to be because of that more "yes men" than challengers to the status quo can become stagnant, rigid and unable to change with an ever-shifting environment.

I have no doubt that had Belichick sent Steve to "apprentice" under say Saban or any other of the coaching tree they would have accepted him. Growing up outside the organization would also offer different perspective, ideas, and better ability to stand before a rabid media, fanbase, and even Patriots players with cachet that his selection was merit based rather than just pure nepotism. Maybe the Mangini issue destroyed that?

Not saying Steve's done a terrible job - the defenses' numbers haven't cratered, but ultimately that stigma will always be the first thing most think of in examining him as a coach and part of the Patriots. I remember when Belichick routinely brought in senior staff that challenged the "Patriot Way" whether overtly or passively. I don't hear about that much anymore.

Lastly, as I said, teams, especially of the corporate variety, can use to be refreshed with new blood periodically. One of my early mentors always said she would rarely hire internally because a nationwide search would always bring new, diverse and often better talent. The exception was that she would also send her own best and brightest out to positions/opportunities externally as their biggest champion to bring them back later in their careers when they'd used that opportunity to broaden their skills and outlook. The goal to continuously improve through new ideas culled from across the world. It seemed to work as when I started with her at one place - it was the highest rated organization in the company. When I rejoined her later at another firm - same thing. She retired having presided at three organizations that when she was done - were the best in their field.

The Patriots seem to be too insular and of a single approach right now. I don't think it's the best way to continuously refresh the staff.

Every soul can be saved but for you an exception has been made. You lose, no way, off you go with T Mazz's voice forever like a skipping record.
Can I spend eternity in hell watching Jets games on an endless loop instead?

Anything but Maz....

We should merge this thread with the Collins signing. It would have a lot of explanatory power.

We needed cash, knowing Detroit was releasing Collins. It's even conceivable gears were turning in Pats/Lions organizations and b/w Collins' people and the Patriots.

The real trade isn't Gilmore for a 6th rounder. The real trade is Gilmore for Collins. Do I like getting knocked way down in trade value because of urgency, if that's what happened... no

Per my core dump yesterday, I'm not sold on the idea that teams are lining up to pick up a guy off the PUP list (hence, I think, the 6th in 2023). But if we were ready to straight release him for the cap room in order to make Collins happen, well, at least there's some additional motivation there. There was a guy targeted, and apparently we didn't think he was going to last long on the open market. Or maybe we were halfway to a deal - make the money available when he's released and the deal happens... don't **** us around though.

::shrug:: All I keep saying is, I don't know anything. But it's impressive how little linkage existed between these two situations until the probability wavefronts collapsed or we opened the box with the cat in it or whatever

Plus, any heretofore unknown Collins linkage.

Again, that's irrelevant. What he was worth today, at this point, is the problem, not the answer.
Right. A problem only solvable with Deus Irae's injury clairvoyance.

Quick, tell us who will have a season-ending injury this winter. We need to move him ASAP.

... feel like we let him go.

be cool to see him with Collins

So you believe Gilmore should've been traded when his value was highest?
I'm not smartest guy here but you always want to sell high if you're selling.

**** happens and you can't maximize everyone's value but this has been a consistent with Bill.

If you googled what have you done for me lately you likely see a picture of Belichick. It seems that approach doesn’t apply to him when it comes to people on this board.

Since the second half of 2019 the patriots are 12-17. That is what he has done lately and that isn’t good.

So whats your solution?

Should he be fired? You realize if Kraft removes his GM duties he also likely leaves as well right? No issue with taking that stance, just want to know what the way ahead is in that circumstance.

If that is the case - who's the heir apparent that's going to take over and how long do they get before their head needs to be on a pike?
