Gilmore traded to Carolina

To Carolina for a 6th round pick. That's the most we could get? Might as well have traded him on draft day for a 2nd rounder instead if BB was not willing to open up the checkbook to PAY the man.

So you believe Gilmore should've been traded when his value was highest?

I thought the team should have done a real rebuild, because they weren’t going anywhere with Stidham/Newton, so yes. The truth is the idea that The Patriot Way was a plug and play system and there would be minimal downgrade post-Brady, got pants’d in 2020.

You're assuming that there was a actual TRADE OFFER on draft day for him..

That being said, I hate the move. Adding Collins while losing Gilmore is a double subtraction in my book. We added a LB who flushed the 2nd half of 2019 down the drain and who hasn't done jack since then but get dumped by one of the worst defenses in the league. We lose one of the better CBs in the league for a pick 2 years from now.

And to top it off, a LB who could have actually HELPED this defense went to the Packers instead..

How did other teams not get in play and let him slip for a measly 6th round pick? That’s the real disaster in all of this.

So according to the article, we announced we're letting him go, then Carolina basically said wait wait wait we'll give you a 6th in 2023... in other words, we'll give you one thing more than zero LOL... I mean, it doesn't get much lower.

That offer was saying, hey if you're just GIVING him away, we'll trade for him. I wonder if they sweetened it as regards our dead money for him? Anybody know?

It's the same reasons as this year except he was injured.

BB wanted to win games. He had Newton. He knew his offense was going to be sucky. He needed a decent defense. Gilly was making a ton of money. Cap was down. Trade offers sucked. At the end of the Bill decided to keep the reigning DPOY.

Is that really a horrible decision?
Many fans tend to think that the majority of NFL franchises (ownership and coaching staffs) can turn on and off competitiveness without any repercussions. That they can simply make the decision "oh we'll tank and lose 14+ games" after say losing two games to start a season without any impact on current and future gate draw, merchandise, media attention, ability to attract and keep talent, and myriad other factors - that it's a lead pipe cinch that losing strategy will equal future winning.

Show me a coach that sells an owner during the interview on "let me lose big for a year, THEN I'll really be able to show you my ability" and I'll show you someone on an unemployment line. Conversely what coach wants to work for an owner whose hiring pitch is the same "I need you to lose before you can win"?

The most likely scenario is that coaches try to win with whatever hand they have (whether dealt by themselves or for them by the GM). Those that don't likewise know they're likely chopped before any shiny new piece comes in anyway (should that tank strategy actually come to fruition) because that losing will be attributed to THEM and their coaching regime.

Just a 6th in 2023 from what we know right now.

I'll be interested to see if he's really back and we cut bait for money only + "better a year early," or if he's not what he used to be.

BB has always said that real football always starts after Thanksgiving. By that time you know what kind of team you have and how the season is going to turn out (assuming the team is not a lost cause before then).

So what does that tell us about the last 2 seasons (and counting) here?

Of those 5 teams, only Green Bay and Seattle would have had the cap space. So that killed 3 options, right off the bat.

Worst is that this 6th rounder is for 2023 draft!!!

BillB blew it. Should have traded him before the draft (2nd, 3rd, or 4th pick) this past April, and immediate negotiate with JC Jackson for a long term deal.

NOW, Patriots may lose both (one gone, one to go).

Sigh.

To understand the Gilmore situation, you need to compare it to the other CB trade the Pats have made this season.

The Patriots traded a 2022 7th rounder and a 2023 5th rounder to the Ravens for Shaun Wade. Wade is a 2021 5th round pick who was not good enough to make the Ravens roster. So far with the Patriots, Wade has been inactive all 4 games including having a PS player (Myles Bryant) elevated to the game roster against the Bucs to play instead of Wade.

Today, the Patriots traded multi-time Pro Bowler., 2019 All pro CB and 2019 NFL Defensive player of the Year to the Panthers for a 2023 6th round pick.

To summarize, the Pats traded Gilmore, a 2023 7th rounder and 2023 5th rounder for Shaun Wade and a 2023 6th rounder.

I know they saved $5.8 million in salary paid and cap space, but they paid Gilmore $1.9 million while he milked an injury to get his contract redone.

Good luck to all the Belichick apologists trying to defend this as good personnel management.

It will be interesting to see if he plays again this year and if he sucks or not. So since Judon will become a free agent in three years should we be trading him this year?

So I am serious, not poking holes or anything, but does it often happen that a guy recovering from an injury and not close to recovered brings a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick?

I am asking seriously. Somebody with a better memory for draft pick hauls for injured players recovering from surgery bring up some examples for me? I will shut up if this happens all the time. Sounds like a dumbass move to me. "I'll give you a 2nd because he was good before that season ending injury/surgery he's not back from." But maybe people do it all the time.

We should have traded him when he still had value.

GB had absolutely no excuse as this is their last chance at a title which could be for a long time.
