I see Gilmore as a slight upgrade over Malcolm, but Ryan was very good last year. Rowe was playing with him at times so it won't be him. Coleman is toast, Jones is likely a ST only guy, and I refuse to even mention our 2nd rounder from last year because he has been so bad that he hasn't earned mention on this board. So that begs the question, who takes Ryan's snaps? My gut says we bring in a JAG vet and/or draft another rookie in rd 3 looking for a gem. Thoughts?

Cyrus Jones will be the SCB.

I think the initial plan was for Cyrus Jones to take Ryan's spot. Dont think anyone thought he would be this bad. He's not a lost cause just yet so i think they could stick with that plan but most likely they'll bring veteran help and will draft someone.

Well we have three options right off the bat with Jones, Jones, Coleman. Coleman certainly seemed to fade last year so although he'll get a chance I'm assuming it won't be him.

Don't sleep on Jonathan Jones :

2016 NFL Draft Profile: Jonathan Jones (Zierlein is a respected draft guy).

Jones lacks the size to play outside but he does have coverage talent and ball skills to match up with quick slot receivers on the next level.

And Cyrus, despite last year's issues :

2016 NFL Draft Profile: Cyrus Jones

Mayock : ""Jones is a starting nickel corner with added value in the return game. Atypical of corners, he has great ball skills. He is a well-coached, technique-sound player." -- Mike Mayock"

That group with at least one signeee/draftee should give us a good option by the end of camp. Both Jones were rookies, there should be solid growth there.

I'm assuming we're operating under the conclusion that Butler is definitely gone then? If so, I don't think we know yet who the CB2 is going to be. But there are several shoes yet to drop:

1) Don't automatically count out Cyrus Jones. He didn't beat out the big guys for starter reps, but I thought I remembered seeing something on his snap counts where he actually played a higher percentage of snaps than I'd thought. That's not a bad thing though, as since I don't remember him being out there, he must not have been picked on when he was. His big problems were the fumbles on ST. Defensively he may have some value, if he makes a sophomore leap.

2) We could draft someone new. I'm assuming if we don't have Butler then we've received a first or high 2nd for him. That pick could be used to draft a competent corner if available.

3) There could still be an under the radar FA signing. Or perhaps we strike gold twice on UDFA

4) Early or mid season trade, which is how we got players like Talib and Rowe to begin with.

when it comes to Cyrus Jones, I believe everything imploded around his special teams gaffes.......the dude has the tools and plays hard.......fresh start will fix him

Bring in Terrance Newman. Some DB's have shown they can perform at a relatively high level at that age (C. Woodson, D. Green come to mind). He won't be relied on to take as many snaps as Ryan but he's experienced enough and if physically able I would bring him in to camp as insurance for Rowe.

Cyrus Jones.

Never underestimate the second year jump. Look what it did to Trey Flowers!
Flowers performed really well before his season ending injury. Jones did nothing well and didn't get much playing time while being healthy all year. On the bright side, he can't do any worse than last year.

He had a couple of good returns before everything went downhill. I still think the kid can play and just needs to get out of his own head.

I thought Cyrus Jones did ok as a CB in his limited reps. It's just his ST appearances were shambolic.

Yeah, he's very skilled and I thought he'd be a better version of Kyle Arrington while being a very good returner (I predicted he'd bring back at least one back for a TD). I am not giving up on him but he needs to show A LOT of improvement. I guess he did well in practice but come game time he peed down his leg a few times.

I agree. He started off well but I think the kickoff issues screwed with his mind and his CB play slipped as the season wore on. For example, the Monday night game vs BAL he was brutal. He was shelved after that.

With that said, I think he needs to have a very good camp. If he muffs a couple of kicks and is getting roasted in coverage its a real possibility BB trades or cuts him.

I'll get hammered for this but if he can get his legal issues straightened out, slim down and get motivated I have no problem with Mevis in the secondary.

Realistically I suspect they'll sign other vets and/or draft a kid they are high on

I wish we could find like a woodson or ronnie lott type corner..... One that wouldnt whine and claw his eyes out over money.

A deion sanders 2.0

new draft pick

I say BB brushes the crap off of Revis.
He has a bounce back year says all the right things and predict we fall in love with him again.

I wouldn't let him near KRs. That ship has sailed. Let him focus on being a cb first and get his confidence back.

Thing about Revis is that even today if he trimmed out he would likely be top 30% of CB in the league. Problem is I don't think he has any motivation to do so. After his comments last year though I don't see it. But MAN how amazing would it be if he did come back, played decently and we won another SB. The saltiness of Jet fans would flavor my meals for years to come.
