bakes I'm with you. I LOVE Big Al, and would have traded Pierce, drafted at #5, and built the team from there. However, once the Allen deal was made, we had to move forward. Big AL will be a stud, but Garnett does more for you right now, to make you a serious contender.
I have to say though, Danny Ainge has to be considered a good GM now. Think about it. The C's, albeit with 30+'ers, are now legitimate contenders, if not one of the favorites, to win the NBA title. I hate to give up Big AL, but at least we have a clear goal and direction. We're not lined up for mediocrity. This will be 3-5 years of contention, with a massive decline thereafter. That's fine by me, as it's better than 20 years of mediocrity.

Let's let this play out and see how they do before we give Ainge any true credit - he's traded for two talented but older veterans coming off of injury. It's not hard to imagine a scenario in which Allen and Garnett get the injury bug while Jefferson blossoms into an all-star caliber player.
But while I'm more than prepared to give Ainge credit - there's a ton out of his control in terms of the draft (if we had the number one pick this would be a different situation) and players developing.
Bottom line though is that Ainge, through the draft and trades, had enough "ammunition" to make these trades happen - and if they work out well, and we waltz into the Eastern Finals, as many think we now can, it will be tough not to call this a good trade.
And also is Ratliff...and his big contract..(looking that Gomes is NOT part of it all). And it would be 5 years extension. Interesting deal..I think it does get them into an East finals..but I do not think farther. What kind of team do they have left? Who is going to play inside?? Play D?? Distribute the ball?? I think the Timnerwolves get the best of the deal..and really wonder how much Garnett has left in the tank. It's a LOT to depend on one player..granted he is one of the best, but if he hits the "over the hill mark"...things will get ugly fast. Ainge needs to get bodies into the Garden..this will do it.WEEI now reporting it's done....jefferson, green, 2 #1's, and telfair
EDIT: plus a monter extention for KG 5 years/$125mil. I would prefer a 3 year deal since he's already 32
It may look horrible in a few years but with the state of the East you have to do this. H A V E T O. You could easily win the conference now.

I said the Conference If you give yourself a shot in the finals, you take it - who knows what could happen. There is no way the Celts get past the Spurs.

As 2001 showed, I think if you give Belichick a shot at a Conference he'll gladly take it and worry about the final game(s) when he gets there.I know you said the conference and tha'ts the problem.... as BB says... "we're all about winning championships"....not conferences.

I look at it this way.
Will a team of Al Jefferson-Gerald Green-Rajon Rondo + 5th pick ever be as good as a team or Paul Pierce-Kevin Garnett-Ray Allen-Rajon Rondo + anyone?? Absolutely NEVER. Not even close.
So I truly don't understand anyone in the "three superstars doesn't make you a contender" camp somehow thinking that our young guys could ever pan out to be the three All-Stars Ainge has collected.
If these three guys don't give you a chance of winning, a group of mid-to late first round draft picks has ZERO chance.
On top of that, let's not forget how much we overrate our prospects in this town. Last summer, Ainge couldn't give Jefferson or Green away. Word around the league from other GMs was flat-out "Boston's chips aren't as good as they think they are." 17 teams passed on Green for a reason and 14 teams passed on Big Al for a reason. While I do think Al Jefferson is a beast, but we're talking about KEVIN GARNETT.
