Former Patriot David Andrews Believes Lomu Will Push Campbell For Starting Role

Woooooooooooooow, records were first kept in 2011? A whole 14 years of data? Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Wowzers. I am struck speechless. Speechless, I tell you.

I mean, the sport's been played for over a hundred years, but 14 years of data. Just amazing.

Caleb Lomu has LT written all over him.
Just like Will Campbell has LG.
It’s a length issue.
Both are nearly identical in height. And although Lomu’s arms are a tad over an inch longer, his wingspan is a little over five inches longer, 82 3/4” v. 77 3/8”. That’s helpful in pass protection.

Don’t forget that Campbell’s wingspan ranks dead last for OTs since records were first kept in 2011.

Benny, spot on!.. for those Ridiculously critical of Campbell ask them how did the LT position look prior to drafting him...

Will Campbell is at 77,” that’s not tackle width. Sorry if that hurts feelings here.

I already said it doesn’t preclude him from being able to play tackle at a decent level… like Joe Thuney. It just might not be optimal.

Look up the definition of “optimal.”

You're not hurting any feelings at all. I'm pretty sure the Patriots coaching staff feels differently than some on patsfans.com wether it's optimal or not some conveniently waiting until a hurting Campbell had struggled into the playoffs to convince themselves he's not a future LT.. he's the starting LT.. now if he struggles all season long like patsfans.com experts believe than I'm sure Vrabel has a contingency plan .

I can understand why State thinks " wingspan" matters, his favorite left tackle, Verdarian Lowe, played like a turnstile, with both arms straight out from his sides. It's as important as a 40 yard dash time is for punters.

Believe it or not if Vrabel, Marrone and the rest believe Campbell’s future is eventually at guard, they’re not going to play with their player’s psyche and announce it to the world.

In fact they’ll say they think Campbell can do anything he sets his mind to, that he can play tackle or guard and maybe center.

Talk is cheap, if you struggle with outside speed, time will reveal anll… and you’ll eventually slide inside to guard.

His wingspan measure is an outlier, but the question is whether that has anything to do with being an effective OT, especially given his other plus athleticism & size measures. I haven't seen or heard any evidence of that, just ipso facto conjecture.

Can't think of any plays where he got beat and I thought "Geez that wouldn't have happened if his left-hand to right-hand length, with arms fully extended to the sides, were a few inches longer".

That said, whatever the coaches decide I'm fine with.

A taller NBA center of similar athletic equivalence is better than a much shorter one. A taller WR of similar athletic abilities is better than a shorter one with the same measurables if you’re looking for a field stretcher. There’s a tool for every job.

We’ll see if his struggles were the result of injury or just the Pro game catching up to him.

The coaches will inevitably do what’s best for the team.
