Are Americans Tuning Out the NFL Over Protests?
in Politics

Tuesday, October 04, 2016

A sizable number of Americans say they may give the National Football League a pass this year, thanks to the player protests over racial issues.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that nearly one-third (32%) of American Adults say they are less likely to watch an NFL game because of the growing number of Black Lives Matter protests by players on the field. Only 13% say they are more likely to watch a game because of the protests. Just over half (52%) say the protests have no impact on their viewing decisions. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

This makes sense to me. The people most likely to tune out are the same casual fans who tune in to the Olympics. When the players are telling you that you and your beloved country are racists before every game, you might not want to tune in for that.

Have they released any info on ratings for last nights game yet? I'm guessing that one should be way down.

Here's the Wall Street Journal's take. Interestingly enough,
Not all sports broadcasts are on a downward trend. NBA ratings were up for the regular season and the finals, as was the NHL. While the NFL is enduring a tough fall, college football ratings have remained strong thanks to several nail-biter finishes and a format that makes every game life or death.

Yeah, I cast streams to a 60 inch TV, but just based on viewing distance I can't reliably tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. I went 4K just for the hell of it because TVs are so cheap now in general, but all it takes is a quick glance at a viewing distance chart to realize you're probably being ripped off. Especially when a lot of 4K TVs out there have pretty miserable refresh rates.

You have no choice but to go with 4k if you want a high end tv. With some manufacturers even mid-range is only in 4k now.

I wish I knew what any of the last 2 pages actually meant. I still don't have a flat screen TV. I s have a JVC 36" TV that seems to weigh over 100 lbs and I still have nightmares about carrying it up to the 3rd floor where I live. If I ever move, I'm going to just throw it off my porch, because I'm not carrying that thing again.

I'm(was) with you brother! My then 10 year old tube tv finally died on me last year. I had to grab a flat screen tv. The colour reproduction is poor compared to the tube TV. That being said I only got a low end/mid range tv. I think it's an IPS screen on the TV. Manufacturers never want to tell you what the panel type is, and who makes it.

Well BSPN hasn't gotten a single second of ratings from my household in 18 months or so. That channel is blocked from anyone in our house even accidentally going to it. Have not watched a single second of the NFL through anything other than a second-hand online stream. I used to watch every game that was on, but have found myself losing interest and have only watched Pats games and a Jets game or two (just for the laughs).

If ratings go down, then eventually payments to the teams will go down, Eventually, that means team CAP and player salaries must go down.

I, for one, hope the morons who insult their fans by dissing the anthem and insulting the fans, take the entire team hits in their own wallets. TANSTAAFL! Actions have consequences. Just because you can, does not mean you should; or that your actions are free, and have no cost.

They insult their fan/customers at their peril, and they should suffer the entire consequences.

I LOVE how these management idiots are blaming the sustained ratings decline on the election. Oh, yeah, a bunch of NFL fans are turning off the football games in order to watch those very entertaining political chat shows, suuuuuuuure. Nothing to do with fatigue of Goodell's very public mismanagement--and his removal of Tom, the biggest star and ratings draw in the game, from public view--at all.

I started getting into college football last year. Far better presentation than the NFL...reminds me of how the NFL was 15 years or so ago. The quality of play is lower (as you'd expect), but it's got a fun, backyard sort of vibe to it, and there aren't endless penalties and commercial breaks. Should I cut the cord with the NFL, I feel like I'll have a safe landing spot in college football.

Coincidentally, I've boycotted college football(and any college sport) because of the way Stanford officials tried to cover up the rape of the Stanford rape victim and claim they did everything right. If school's gonna care more about their image than a survivor then I'm not going to watch. And F*ck the NCAA for reducing the sanctions on Penn State.

I never had any horse in the race. So it was really easy for me to cutoff College football cold turkey.

Fair enough. I haven't really paid attention to it much before last year, and really this year. Last year, I was just watching games overseas...the "extracurriculars" off the field are kinda unknown to me. For example, it was news to me that Penn State got a reduction in sanctions. I was a 100% NFL guy until defamegate left me open to the idea of college when I was overseas and everyone was watching Alabama.
