Patriots improve to 2-0; Jets drop to 1-1

Another day in Pats history, another victory over the Jete.

WR Aaron Dobson scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the first quarter on the first play of his NFL career. Dobson was inactive for the first game with a hamstring injury, and was wide open down the right hash mark for the Pats only TD. The Patriots intercepted Geno Smith three times in the fourth quarter, two by Aqib Talib and the other by Alfonzo Dennard.

One picture-perfect pass started the New England Patriots toward an ugly win.

Tom Brady threw a 39-yard touchdown to a wide-open Aaron Dobson on the game's first series before both offenses played as sloppily as the second-half weather, and the Patriots got by the New York Jets 13-10 on Thursday night. In the second half, the teams had to deal with a torrential downpour that started at intermission.

Brady had trouble connecting with his rookie-filled receiving corps, while Jets rookie Geno Smith was sacked four times when he took too much time to find someone to throw to. Thirteen of Brady's 19 completions went to veteran Julian Edelman, who knows the offense better than the three rookie wide receivers. The Patriots (2-0) managed just nine first downs after leading the NFL in points and yards last season.

The Jets (1-1) cut the lead to 13-10 on Bilal Powell's 3-yard touchdown run with 5:05 left in the third quarter. But Smith threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, two to Aqib Talib and one to Alfonzo Dennard. Talib's second with 38 seconds left sealed the victory.

With wide receiver Danny Amendola, tight end Rob Gronkowski and running back Shane Vereen all sidelined, Brady was without three of his top offensive players. He was left with just two tight ends and four wide receivers, three of them rookies.

On the 17 possessions in the first half, there were 11 punts, a lost fumble, one missed field goal, three field goals and a touchdown.

The officials didn't have a very good half, either, with one touchdown by each team and a lost fumble by Edelman being overturned by video review.

The only touchdown of the half came on the first series when Brady hit Dobson down the right side. It was the first reception for the second-round draft choice, who missed the opening 23-21 win over the Buffalo Bills with a hamstring injury.

Stephen Gostkowski's 21-yard field goal made it 10-0 before Nick Folk kicked a 37-yarder for the Jets after Smith's 9-yard pass to Clyde Gates, originally ruled a touchdown, was changed to an incompletion following the replay. Gostkowski added a 30-yarder with 5:05 left in the half, but the Patriots didn't score again.

Patriots rookie Ryan Allen tied two team records he'd prefer not to have -- 11 punts for 514 yards. ... The Patriots have won five straight games over the Jets and 18 of 23.

Julian Edelman had 13 receptions for 78 yards, setting a new career high for most catches in a game. Edelman’s previous career high was 10 receptions for 103 yards on Jan. 3, 2010 in the 2009 regular season finale at Houston. The Patriots have now had a player with at least 10 catches in each of their games this season.

Tom Brady had two passes to rookie wide receivers for more than 30 yards. Brady had a 39-yard touchdown to rookie WR Aaron Dobson in the first quarter and then hit a 38-yarder to WR Kenbrell Thompkins in the second quarter to set up a field goal.

The Patriots have now forced a turnover in 29 straight games dating back to 2011, and including all 16 regular season games of 2012 and now the first two games of 2013 after CB Aqib Talib forced a fumble that was recovered by DB Devin McCourty in the first quarter. The NFL record for most consecutive games with a turnover since the merger in 1970 is 71 by Philadelphia from 1985-1990. The last time the Patriots did not register at least one turnover was on Oct. 9, 2011 vs. the New York Jets.

Second-year cornerback Alfonzo Dennard intercepted New York’s Geno Smith at the Patriots’ 31-yard line in the fourth quarter with New England holding a 13-10 lead. The interception was Dennard’s first of the 2013 season and the fourth of his career. As a rookie in 2012, Dennard had three interceptions, including one returned 87 yards for a touchdown against Indianapolis on November 18, 2012.

The Patriots are off to a 2-0 start for the 12th time in team history and the seventh time under head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick has led the Patriots to a 2-0 start in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 and now 2013. The Patriots also started 2-0 in 1964, 1974, 1986,1997 and 1999.

Bill Belichick won his 207th career game, bringing him within two wins of Chuck Noll for fifth place on the NFL’s all-time wins list.

DE Chandler Jones tied his career high with his second two sack game of his career. He had his first two-sack game at Seattle on Oct. 14, 2012. Jones sacked Jets QB Geno Smith twice in the second quarter. First, he dropped Smith for an 11-yard loss on third-and-5 in the second quarter, forcing a Jets punt on the next play. On the Jets’ next drive in the second quarter, Jones sacked Smith again, this time for a 5-yard loss.

With tonight’s win, the Patriots are now 11-1 all-time in home openers at Gillette Stadium. New England is now 30-24 overall in home openers.

Edelman returned six punts for 72 yards against New York and now has returned 81 punts for 1,047 yards during his Patriots’ career and has the highest punt return average in NFL history with a 12.9-yard average.

Leon Washington and Matthew Mulligan made their Patriots debuts tonight, while 2013 draft picks WR Aaron Dobson and DB Duron Harmon made their NFL debuts. Washington, Dobson and Huron were inactive in the season opener. Mulligan was re-signed by the team earlier this week.

Dont’a Hightower pushed New York’s Tommy Bohanon out of bounds for a 3-yard loss on a third-quarter pass play, setting up a third-and-11 that the Jets did not convert. At the time, the Patriots were clinging to a 13-10 lead and the Jets had the ball looking to tie the score or take the lead.

Kyle Arrington tipped a Geno Smith pass in the fourth quarter intended for WR Clyde Gates that was intercepted by Aqib Talib. The turnover came with the Jets driving inside the Patriots’ 30-yard line and New England holding a 13-10 fourth-quarter lead. Arrington also broke up a deep Geno Smith pass intended for Gates in the second quarter.

Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi, recently inducted into the Patriots’ Hall of Fame, was honored at halftime.

Aaron Dobson scored his first NFL touchdown on a 39-yard pass play in the first quarter.

Aqib Talib forced a fumble by Jets receiver Stephen Hill in the first quarter.

Tom Brady throws for 517 yards
Wes Welker scores on 99-yard TD reception

Week 1, Game 1 at Sun Life Stadium
New England Patriots 38, Miami Dolphins 24
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Tony Sparano
QBs: Tom Brady, Chad Henne
Odds: New England Patriots favored by 7½

Week One finished with offensive fireworks on Monday Night Football, as the Patriots and Dolphins combined for 62 points and 1,110 total net yardage. The game was clinched in the fourth quarter when Tom Brady and Wes Welker tied an NFL record for longest pass play that will never be broken - 99 yards - to put the Pats up by 38-17 with 5:44 remaining.

Tom Brady threw his first interception since last October, so he wasn't perfect in the New England Patriots' opener. He was close, though.

Brady threw for a team-record 517 yards and four touchdowns, including a 99-yarder to Wes Welker, and the reigning AFC East champions started with a victory for the eighth consecutive season Monday night by beating the Miami Dolphins 38-24.

Defensive end Jared Odrick picked off a deflected pass to set up a Miami touchdown and end Brady's NFL-record streak of 358 passes without an interception. Otherwise Brady and the Patriots picked up where they left off last season, when he threw for 36 TDs and his team led the league in scoring.

New England totaled 622 yards, the most in franchise history and the most ever allowed by Miami.

Brady, who went 32 for 48, became the 11th quarterback to throw for at least 500 yards. Norm Van Brocklin set the record of 554 yards in 1951.

The capper came with 5:44 left and the Patriots leading 31-17. After they stopped Miami on downs at the 1-foot line, Brady lined up in the shotgun on first down and threw from his end zone to Welker, who had slipped behind Benny Sapp near the 30-yard line.

Welker caught the pass in stride and sprinted untouched for the score to complete the longest play in Patriots history.

Brady also threw touchdown passes on consecutive plays. He hit Aaron Hernandez for a 31-yard score, and when a replay review determined the receiver was down at the 1, Brady threw to him again for a TD on the next play.

His other scoring passes covered 10 yards to Rob Gronkowski and 2 yards to Welker.

The performance overshadowed Miami's Chad Henne, who threw for a career-high 416 yards.

After ranking sixth in total defense last season and returning 10 players from that unit, the Dolphins never seemed to gain their footing Monday night with Brady and Patriots operating heavily out of a no-huddle offense.

With things moving so quickly, Miami never seemed to know when the ball was being snapped, nor could they get a grasp on what was coming next. Their confusion cost them as they had to burn timeouts to keep up and were even whistled for having 12 men on the field.

New England ran 71 offensive plays, 28 without a huddle. They were above a 50 percent ratio until late in the game when they began to separate.

Perhaps the speed in which they played can be better described through this: New England out-gained Miami 622 yards to 488, yet lost the possession battle, 31:33-28:27.

The 906 net yards passing by both teams was an NFL record.

Brady thrived directing a no-huddle attack that kept the Dolphins on their heels.

He was sacked only once, and good protection gave his receivers plenty of time to work their way open.

Newcomer Chad Ochocino was targeted three times and had only one catch for 14 yards. But Welker made eight receptions for 160 yards against his former team, and tight ends Hernandez and Gronkowski combined for 189 yards on 13 catches.

The Dolphins' defense returned virtually intact from last season and was expected to be the team's strength, but Brady riddled them from the start. He completed his first eight passes for 127 yards on the Patriots' first two possessions, and both ended with TDs.

Brady's first interception since Oct. 17 came early in the third quarter, when he tried to hit Julian Edelman in the flat. Sapp deflected the ball to the 304-pound Odrick, who rumbled 40 yards to the 9. Two plays later, Henne hit Brian Hartline with a 10-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-all.

Brady was so rattled it took him 10 plays to put the Pats ahead to stay.

Tom Brady threw for a career-high 517 yards, and four touchdowns. When he does that, it’s almost money in the bank. But other than that, the defense showed some improvement, especially in one big category: third downs. The Dolphins were 2-of-14 (14 percent). That’s a long ways from the league-worst 47 percent the Patriots gave up all of last season. The closest single game was 25 percent to the Jets in the blowout matchup. Amazing what happens when the defense gets off the field and gives Brady more touches.

Offensive line: The unit, despite starting newcomers at RT and RG, and dealing with the injury to Dan Koppen, allowed just one sack and one quarterback hit (according to the official stats). We’ll need to take a closer look but more often than not Brady had all day to throw back there and rookie Nate Solder did a very good job against Dolphins OLB Cameron Wake. The Dolphins can get after the quarterback, and they have against Brady, but the line did a great job tonight.

Defense: Yeah, the Dolphins went right down the field on the opening drive and they had 488 total yards, but the Patriots’ defense showed some vast improvement in getting off the field (14 percent on third downs) – and the unit is still very much a work in progress. There were so many preseason injuries, the players still haven’t worked a lot together, and Belichick is still tinkering with who is going to do what. For starters, this wasn’t bad at all.

Fact is, Brady and Patriots coach Bill Belichick seem to have the answer for everything in this red-eyed rivalry, which makes this 38-24 Miami loss sting much worse than any September NFL happening ever should.

It was shooting Fish in a barrel, pretty much. Tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez were so open so often that choosing between them was Brady's toughtest task. They had 13 catches and two touchdowns between them. That's like getting a ton of RBI from the bottom of your batting order. It's the wretched excess of a championship team.

Coulda been a great night, this prime-time spectacular, with so many good things happening for Miami.

Woulda been nice if Brady, and all the bad things he represents, weren't here, too.

Some PatsFans threads and articles from this game.

Nice trip down memory lane with Steve Grogan's column, a post-game Zeus thread, and a pre-game Q&A with a Dolphins beat writer by the name of Ben Volin.
7. Lots of discussion about the significance of the use of Ochocinco (18 plays) and Spikes (healthy inactive). Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but could it be that they were written out of the game plan? The offense featured the TEs. On D, we didn't need a banger in the middle against Reggie Bush. Maybe they didn't play much because - this week - they weren't needed. Patriots won, so it doesn't matter to me who played and who didn't. Still, both players would be well advised to deactivate their Twitter accounts. ASAP.

Pats dominate Bengals in season opener, 38-24
Brandon Tate runs 2nd half kickoff back 97 yards

Week 1, Game 1 at Gillette Stadium
New England Patriots 38, Cincinnati Bengals 24
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Marvin Lewis
QBs: Tom Brady, Carson Palmer
Odds: New England Patriots favored by 5½

Good live streaming update below, plus Chad Finn's final recap:
It is the seventh straight season the Patriots have begun the season 1-0.

Tom Brady completed 25 of 35 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns — two to Wes Welker, who culminated a remarkable recovery from a major knee injury he suffered in the final week of the 2009 regular season with eight catches for 64 yards.

Welker’s two touchdowns were sandwiched around a 32-yard field goal as the Patriots jumped to a 17-0 lead before the second quarter was half over.

The Patriots also got a boost from its offense and special teams. Linebacker Gary Guyton returned an interception 59 yards for a score to give the Patriots a 24-0 lead 5:38 of the second quarter.

The Bengals got on the scoreboard with Mike Nugent’s 54-yard field goal with 1:14 left in the first half.

But any designs the Bengals may have had on a comeback were effectively ended on the opening kickoff of the second half, when Patriots second-year receiver Brandon Tate took it back 97 yards for a score and a 31-3 lead.

The Bengals, who went to a no-huddle offense for much of the second half after falling behind early, received impressive individual statistical performances from quarterback Carson Palmer (34-50, 345 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) and receiver Chad Ochocinco (12 catches, 159 yards and a score).

Rob Gronkowski scored the Patriots’ lone offensive touchdown in the second half with a one-yard TD reception, the first catch of the rookie tight end’s career. Fellow rookie tight end Aaron Hernandez had a 45-yard catch and run on the Patriots’ first possession, while Patrick Chung was a defensive standout with 12 tackles, nine solo.

At times during the preseason things looked awkward, out of place and flat out grim, but when it was time for them to take the field for their season-opener Sunday at Gillette Stadium, they pulled it all together and sent a loud message to the rest of the league by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 38-24.

Just four days removed from being involved in car accident, quarterback Tom Brady (25 of 35 for 258 yards and three touchdowns) led the Patriots to touchdowns on their first three possessions and kept punter Zoltan Mesko off the field until the third quarter.

Brady found Welker, who was making his regular-season return after having surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee seven months and 10 days ago, in the end zone for the team’s first two touchdowns.

Welker scored his second touchdown on a crossing route over the middle on third and four from the goal line to give the Patriots a 17-0 lead.

It was the fourth time in Welker’s career that he scored twice in a game.

Tom Brady ended his strange week with a typically strong performance.

Going from a car crash and a new contract on Thursday to another outstanding game on Sunday, Brady smiled and joked after leading the New England Patriots to a 38-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The quarterback was shaken by a two-car crash near his Boston home on Thursday morning that left him unhurt but sent a passenger in the other vehicle to a hospital. He called the Patriots to say he'd be a bit late, then practiced as usual later that day.

The two-time Super Bowl MVP wouldn't let his contract become a distraction either. After negotiations during the week, Brady agreed to a 4-year, $72 million contract, an average salary of $18 million that is the highest in the NFL.

Welker was overshadowed in pre-game chatter by the Bengals talkative receiving tandem of Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens. Ochocinco had 12 catches for 159 yards and a touchdown, and Owens added seven receptions for 53 yards.

But Welker had more impact on the game with his eight catches for 64 yards, helping the Patriots to a 24-3 halftime lead.

Randy Moss got support Monday from teammates after he said just minutes after the New England Patriots season-opening win that he didn’t feel appreciated.

In a 16-minute postgame news conference, Moss reiterated that he doesn’t expect to return to the Patriots next season. He is in the final year of a three-year, $27 million contract and said there have been no talks toward a new one.

He said he wasn’t mad or hurt and would be willing to consider a new contract with the team during the season. But, still a dangerous deep threat in his 13th NFL season, Moss said it would be “a smack in my face” to wait until the season is over to reach a contract agreement.

The timing of his remarks, on the heels of a 38-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, may not have been ideal, but Fred Taylor didn’t complain.

“I’m not questioning anything. I do understand the business side of it all,” he said. “It didn’t seem like it was, ’all right, this is the timing. I’ve got to do this or anything like that.’ It was just how he was feeling at the moment.”

Taylor, in his 13th NFL season, and running back Sammy Morris said Moss’ comments wouldn’t be a distraction as the Patriots prepare for Sunday’s game at the New York Jets.

Moss said last February for the first time that “the Patriots don’t really pay” so he expected them not to re-sign him for 2011.

Pats win on Adam Vinatieri's last second field goal
Carroll's Patriots beat Parcells' Jets, 30-28

Sunday Sept 12, 1999 at 1:00
Week 1, Game 1 at Giants Stadium
New England Patriots 30, New York Jets 28
Head Coaches: Pete Carroll, Bill Parcells
QBs: Drew Bledsoe, Vinny Testaverde/Tom Tupa/Rick Mirer
Odds: New York Jets favored by 7

The Patriots scored touchdowns on a 58-yard pass from Drew Bledsoe to Tony Simmons, a defensive fumble recovery in the end zone by Willie McGinest, and a 22-yard rush by Terry Allen. However the Jets led late due to a Bryan Cox pick-six and things did not look good for the Pats. However, Chris Slade's interception of a pass intended for Keyshawn Johnson set up Adam Vinatieri's game winning 23-yard field goal with three seconds left on the clock. The Patriots were aided by two failed two-point conversions by the Jets in the fourth quarter.

In the season-opening game of the 1999 season, the Jets and Patriots met at Giants Stadium to kick off the season.

Led by QB Vinny Testaverde, the Jets were coming off a 12-4 season and picked by many to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. However, their hopes went up in smoke early in the second quarter when Testaverde tore his Achilles’ heel, rendering him out for the season.

The game itself was a back and forth classic, with the Jets trailing by as many as 11 in the second half before a Tom Tupa TD pass and Bryan Cox interception return gave them a one-point lead.

However, Rick Mirer, in for Testaverde, threw a costly interception late in the fourth quarter that led to Adam Vinatieri kicking the game-winning FG with just three seconds left to send the Jets fans home in tears.

The Patriots kicked off the 1999 NFL season with a wild 30-28 win over the Jets in a game filled with big plays, big mistakes and key injuries.

The final big mistake sealed the Jets' fate as quarterback Rick Mirer, who had entered the game in the fourth quarter for Tom Tupa, threw his second interception of the game, this one to Chris Slade. It came with the Jets up, 28-27 with just over three minutes left to play. The Patriots took the turnover and moved 44 yards to the Jets 5-yard line. From there the game came down to the foot of Adam Vinatieri who banged home a 23-yard field goal for the Patriots win.

To get to that point, both teams had to persevere events not for the faint of heart.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, it was the veteran Bledsoe making a very rookie mistake as he threw in the face of pressure and into the arms of Bryan Cox of the Jets. Cox galloped 27 yards for the score. That mistake and big play put the Jets up, 28-27.

Then there was the fake field goal staged by the Jets. With the Patriots up, 27-22, early in the fourth quarter, Jets head coach Bill Parcells elected to roll the dice on what would have been a 31-yard John Hall field goal attempt. Instead, Tupa took the snap as holder and kept it on a run to the right. He was brought down inches from the first down marker where the on-field official ruled him short. Parcells again took a chance and challenged the call with the league's new instant replay system. The Jets lost the challenge, the ball and an important timeout in a game obviously going down to the wire.

Earlier, no play was bigger than the Steve Israel sack of Tupa to begin the second half. On first and 10 from his own 26, Tupa had dropped back looking right. Israel came from his corner spot and blindsided Tupa sending the ball on a backwards journey. Brandon Mitchell was first to get a paw on the ball as it continued into the end zone. There, Willie McGinest pounced on it for the defensive touchdown and with the Vinatieri extra point, a 17-16 Patriots lead.

New England added to their lead after stopping the Jets three and out on their next possession. A fine Troy Brown punt return sprung by a Lamont Warren block set the Patriots up on the Jets 31. Two plays later, Terry Allen blew through a hole over left tackle for a 22-yard touchdown.

Three points were added on New England's next drive. Bledsoe connected with Terry Glenn for 45 yards and the Patriots were inside the Jets 10. They couldn't convert for the touchdown and wound up with a 22-yard Vinatieri field goal. Patriots 27, Jets 16.

The Jets were no where near dead. Tupa saw Keyshawn Johnson on the left sideline, Chris Carter missed a tackle and the Jets superstar was off for a 65-yard gain down to the New England 5. Tupa then found tight end Fred Baxter in the end zone for six. The Jets tried and failed a 2-point conversion and the score at that point was 27-22.

The Patriots looked impressive on their first drive but came up short of the end zone and settled for a Vinatieri 33-yard field goal. Bledsoe completed his first six passes before throwing his seventh away in the face of Jets linebacker Mo Lewis' rush. The big play on the drive was a Bledsoe to Shawn Jefferson hook-up on third and five. The completion was good for 34 yards.

The Jets answered right back with a 12-play 76-yard drive that ended in a Vinny Testaverde touchdown pass to Richie Anderson for 27 yards.

After it looked like the Jets were on the move again in the second quarter, Lawyer Milloy came up big. On a third and 10 play, Milloy picked off Testaverde over the middle to set up his offense on their own 36. Three plays later, Bledsoe found Tony Simmons streaking down the right sideline for a 57-yard touchdown and a 10-7 lead.

The play came immediately after right tackle Zefross Moss was forced to leave the game with a sprained left ankle.

But no injury was bigger than Testaverdes'. Mid-way through the second quarter, Testaverde went down with a season-ending ruptured Achilles' tendon. The quarterback had moved to his left in reaction to a Curtis Martin fumble and somehow had his foot in an awkward enough position to do the damage. No one had touched him. Later, the Jets would also lose running back/returner Leon Johnson for the season with a knee and ankle injury.

It was a perfect time for the Jets to begin feeling sorry for themselves. Instead, in came ex-Patriot Tupa who calmly took his first snap and proceeded to toss a 25-yard touchdown pass to Johnson in the middle of the end zone to put the Jets up 14-10.

The first half ended in football follies style. A Tupa punt had pinned the Patriots on their own 2-yard line with little time left on the clock. After being unable to move the ball and a Terry Allen penalty for a false start, the Patriots attempted a punt from their own 6. Mike Bartrum's snap sailed over the head of punter Lee Johnson with :08 left on the clock and the Jets tacked on an additional two points to their lead. The Patriots headed into the locker room down, 16-10. That play was a small foreshadowing of the events to come in the second half.

On the day, Bledsoe was 21 of 31 passing for 340 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Terry Glenn was the high receiver for New England with 7 catches for 113 yards. The Jets' Curtis Martin led all rushers with 85 yards on 19 carries and Keyshawn Johnson had a monster game with 8 catches for 194 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Willie McGinest had 6 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Steve Israel also had six tackles with a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. Tedy Bruschi led all Patriots with 12 tackles.

Patriots lose on late fumble
in Mac Jones' first NFL game

Sunday Sept 12, 2021 at 4:25
Week 1, Game 1 at Gillette Stadium
Miami Dolphins 17, New England Patriots 16
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Brian Flores
QBs: Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa
Odds: Patriots favored by 3

The Patriots controlled this game statistically:
First Downs, 24-16
Total Yards, 393 to 252
Rushing Yards, 125 to 74
Passing Yards, 281 to 202
Third Downs, 11-16 to 4-11
Time of Possession, 36:43 to 23:17

However, the Pats turned the ball over twice to one for Miami, the last one being a game-changer. Damien Harris fumbled on the Miami 9-yard line with 3:35 left to play, and the Dolphins were able to run out the clock for a one-point victory. Harris rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries, Nelson Agholor had five receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown, and Mac Jones completed 74% of his passes on a 29-39 game, good for 281 yards, one TD and no interceptions in his rookie debut.

The Patriots also shot themselves in the foot with eight penalties for 84 yards, compared to Miami's five infraction for just 28 yards.

Really sucks to lose that way, fumbling inside the 10 yard line only down a point with like 2 min left.... all they really needed to do at that point was burn more time, kick the chip shot field goal and pretty much seal the win... but can't totally blame Harris since he was clearly gassed after Stevenson was benched early for also fumbling. Just not a good situation.

Far, far too many mistakes and costly penalties. The refs were truly awful today but I don't have the willpower to even dig into that. We know Bill will put a lot of time into cleaning things up and hopefully there's a quick turnaround there.

The one thing to take away is that after 1 game it looks like our QB of the future is here. Mac Jones was a baller today and bailed the team out of multiple bad situations that were not his fault. He ended the day 29/39 (74% completion percentage) for 281 yards, a TD, no picks and a 102.6 passer rating. Despite no Trent Brown and an iffy performance by Herron, and a lot of pressure from Miami, he made some beautiful throws. Some misses on the quick passes but it's understandable - that rhythm will come with time. I'm very excited about Mac and the future of the team.

Bill Parcells' 2nd game as Pats head coach:
Lions win in overtime, 19-16

Sunday Sept 12, 1993 at 1:00
Week 2, Game 2 at Foxboro Stadium
Detroit Lions 19, New England Patriots 16 in OT
Head Coaches: Bill Parcells, Wayne Fontes
QBs: Drew Bledsoe, Rodney Peete
Odds: Lions favored by 7

Future Patriot Willie Clay scored on a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff for the Lions, and Detroit's Jason Hanson kicked four field goals, including a 38 yarder in overtime to deny Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe their first victory with the Patriots. Bledsoe had driven the Pats down the field to tie the score on a pass to Vincent Brisby with just seconds remaining to play.

Barry Sanders rushed for 148 yards after being limited to 20 yards in the first half, but the Pats picked Rodney Peete off three times to keep the game close. With a total of seven turnovers between the two clubs, it seemed at times that neither team wanted to win this game.

Rodney Peete's overtime passing drove the Detroit Lions to Jason Hanson's fourth field goal and ruined the New England Patriots' home opener, 19-16, yesterday in Foxboro, Mass.

Peete threw completions of 14 yards to Barry Sanders, 13 to Herman Moore and 17 to Brett Perriman on the final drive. The last pass gave Detroit a first down at the New England 28-yard line.

Sanders then ran three times for 8 yards, and Hanson kicked a 38-yard field goal at 11 minutes 4 seconds of overtime, giving the Lions their first 2-0 start since 1985.

It dashed the hopes of a sellout crowd that saw the New England rookie, Drew Bledsoe, march the Patriots 77 yards in 3:12 to the game's only offensive touchdown, a 2-yard pass to Vincent Brisby with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Bledsoe, the top choice in the National Football League draft, completed 9 of 12 passes for 61 yards on the series.

Until then, the only touchdown came 11 seconds into the game when Willie Clay of Detroit returned Troy Brown's fumble of the opening kickoff 15 yards. It was the earliest touchdown against the Patriots.

Between those two scores, Hanson had field goals of 22, 23 and 26 yards while New England kicker Scott Sisson connected from 21, 26 and 32 yards.

New England (0-2) lost its fifth straight home opener.

Sanders, held to 20 rushing yards in the first half, ended up with 148 on 32 carries. Peete completed 16 of 25 passes for 175 yards, while Bledsoe was 28 for 49 for 239 yards.

Ron Meyers wins first game as NFL head coach
Patriots 24, Baltimore Colts 13

Sunday Sept 12, 1982 at 2:00
Week 1, Game 1 at Memorial Stadium
New England Patriots 24, Baltimore Colts 13
Head Coaches: Ron Meyer, Frank Kush
QBs: Matt Cavanaugh, Art Schlichter/Mike Pagel/David Humm
Odds: Patriots favored by 2

Tony Collins rushed for 137 yards on 21 rushes (6.5 yards per carry) and added 56 yards and a touchdown on four receptions in the 24-13 win at Baltimore. The Patriot defense limited three Colt quarterbacks to a combined 43% pass completion rate with three interceptions and four Baltimore turnovers. The Pats hurt themselves with twelve penalties for 87 yards, compared to two penalties for ten yards on the Colts.

Rookie head coach Ron Meyer singled out linebackers Larry McGrew and Don Blackmon for special praise as he touted his newly constructed defense.

'They did what you wanted from outside linebackers,' Meyer said. 'McGrew is playing very good football. Your linebackers have to be exceptional athletes. They're put in a position to make big plays. I would envision that type of production and to get better every week. They have to learn a few of the finer points, particularly Don.'

McGrew, who had nine tackles and one blocked pass, is a second-year man from Southern California. Blackmon, a second-year pro from Tulsa, had four tackles, five assists, an interception and a fumble recovery.

'We flew around and out-hit them defensively,' Meyer said. 'I like that. Our whole design was we wanted to stuff the ball at them, knowing we have a young defensive line. I wanted to keep the ball with us.'

On offense, Meyer was pleased with second-year running back Tony Collins, who piled up 137 yards in 21 carries.

'The first time I saw him in the mini-camp I knew he was special,' Meyer said.

Collins was more modest.

'Any good running back can do what I did with the offensive line we have,' he said. 'If I can get the ball 15 times a game I'll be happy. I always shoot for 100 yards and four catches each game.'

The Patriots may not have won the first game of the 1976 season, but they won the next three, finished with an 11-3 record, and got the New England area truly excited about the team for the first time in forever. On this day Andy Johnson rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown, and had a reception that went for 53 yards. Sam Cunningham added 56 yrads on 14 rushes (4.0 ypc) and caught four passes for 19 yards.
