I think the Patriots have learned as they went along that you cannot just stand pat with what you have, and being unpredictable is an advantage over opponents. Part of the reason for their continued success is that they change things up constantly so that nobody knows what to expect when playing them, and nobody can develop a "book" on how to play them. There are good players out there being underused and underpaid by other teams, and if you can identify them accurately, you can bring them in short term and make a run. If they sign long term, great. If not, you thank them, let them go and sign the next guy that you've already identified. Then, once your team is set for the year, you develop individual game plans that play to the strengths of the players available for that week and that opponent (they've gotten better in the last decade at adjusting when a critical player goes down). Also, Tom Brady ain't getting any younger, and why not go for it all while you can.
This creates such anticipation and excitement in fans like me. I don't even really get upset when they let a key guy go, as they've shown time and again that they are two steps ahead. Can't wait for the season to start!
