I have a new favourite top 3 picks for a mock although it either requires a trade back to acquire a second 2nd or a trade up from 69. So, in this instance, Carter is on the board at 4 and the Panthers trade up from 8, giving us 57 and 114 for the privilege. This mock was done on NFL Mock Draft Database.
8 Will Campbell, OT, LSU
This could just as easily be Membou. My gut says we go with Campbell.
38. Treveyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State
I think Vrabel a) wants to add a complimentary RB and B) more pace to the offense. Treveyon fits both criteria comfortably. Henderson would be RB1b to Stevenson's RB1a. In other words, I don't think Henderson is an RB2. He has 1 career fumble and is an excellent pass blocker.
57. Jack Bech, WR, TCU
I, and Hayden Winks, compare Bech to Chris Godwin. Bech provides the high percentage receiver Vrabel has talked about wanting. As a freshman at LSU he beat Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas and our own Boutte for receptions suggesting he'd be comfortable playing well in our offense as a rookie. This pick could just as easily be Jayden Higgins. Bech is not a burner but that is to come.
69. Ozzy Trapilo, OT, Boston College
He'll start at swing tackle with the obvious future move to RT when Morgan Moses leaves. This also allows Caedan Wallace to compete for a guard position where he might be better suited. If Membou had been the pick, I'd have gone with Charles Grant here.
77. Kyle Williams, WR, Washington State
You knew that was coming didn't you? Here's the pace and explosion I promised to compliment the Bech pick.
106. Femi Oladejo, EDGE, UCLA
This pick could just as easily have been Que Robinson but we've met with Oladejo so he gets the nod here.
114. Jacob Parrish, CB, Kansas State
Runs 4.35, is strong in run support and blitzes. Ideal competition for Marcus Jones and can also play outside so provides backup there too.
144. Jamaree Caldwell, DT, Oregon
He's a 340lb DT with the athleticism and effort to chase runners down from sideline to sideline. Arguably the best of the day 3 run-stuffing defenders. Tonga's backup in year one and replacement thereafter.
171. Jackson Hawes, TE, Georgia Tech
If you think your LT might struggle at times, why not get an elite run blocker to help him out?
220. Jake Majors, C, Texas
Adding more competition to the interior of the OL, Majors is a legit captain of the OL type.
238. Tommy Mellott, QB, Montana State
Essay incoming.
He'll only be known to those of you who have ventured into the QB thread (h/t to
@bakes781 on this one). Mellott is an undersized QB at only 6' but he has elite athleticism for the position. His 41" VJ at his pro day would have broken the combine record for QBs and, on top of that, he ran a 4.39 forty and a sub 7 second 3-cone. He's not going to be the long-term answer at backup QB but can provide a 3rd body for pre-season. Where he gets interesting is that he is being viewed as a potential switcher to WR and PR. Sound familiar? Well, he is working with JE on making that switch apparently.
I shall leave you with some quotes about Mellott from Bruce Feldman''s freaks list: "Smartest QB I have ever been around", "Smartest human alive", "Will be president of United States", "Every father wants their daughter to date him. Every mother wants to adopt him". At least on the president thing, he can't do that until he's 35 so at least we'll get a good decade out of him.
