Some O-line numbers: When I look at Cunningham below and his one qb pressure allowed, it was a horrible effort that could have gotten Mac seriously injured.

PASS PROTECTION​

New England’s quarterbacks were under pressure on ten of their 32 drop-backs on Thursday night, or 31.3 percent, which is an impressive number for the 11 offensive linemen who played.

Starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn had a rough rep early on against star pass-rusher Chase Young, but Young’s quarterback hit on Newton was the lone pressure Wynn allowed.

Outside of Young’s spectacular rush, the other four Pats’ starting offensive line members didn’t allow a single quarterback hit, and only Jones was sacked once in the game overall.

Starting center James Ferentz is having a breakout summer of sorts, allowing only one hurry in 29 pass-blocking snaps with the highest run-blocking grade of all 11 offensive linemen (84.2).

Two other notes in the trenches are that 2019 third-round pick Yodny Cajuste’s return to a game field showed plenty of rust, while sixth-round pick William Sherman only played five snaps.

No you don't Cam. You have started here one year... And you have done nothing here. You've had one losing season. And even if you had brought us a super bowl win, no one is this league is ever really owed anything if the play on the field isn't good, or someone behind you is better. But don't act like you're entitled to a job when your play since you've gotten here hasn't shown you deserve to be a legit NFL starter.

Why would he deserve any loyalty from the Pats? It is a result-based business and he never provided any good results.

I mean, he is a good guy. He is likeable. He seems to be a great teammate. But come on dude, do not go all cryptic on social media in the middle of training camp.

Cam is probably still starting week 1. But he is worried about the regular season. Then again, if he wins enough games, he won't need to worry. It isn't like we'll replace him if we are 6-2 and thanksgiving is coming up soon. Cam's fate is in his own hands.

If newton is going to get all sullen and sulk creating a QB crises hes going to lose. Jones played well enough that BB will ship newton out if he creates a problem.

For me the positives with Jones were more about the absence of classic "oh ****, this rookie doesn't get it/doesn't have it yet" red flags than anything spectacularly good he did. And some of that was just circumstantial: playing with 2nd/3rd team guys later in the game, conservative vanilla play calling, and so on.

To elaborate on my earlier post, what stood out to me was:

1. Mental speed. Brady freely admitted that he had problems with this as a rookie. Most rookies do regardless of how good they ultimately turn out. Too slow (or just flat UNABLE) to read the defense, throw into coverage and get picked. Too slow going through progressions, throws are late and behind, incomplete or picked. Hold the ball too long because of one or both of the above and eat avoidable sacks, fumble, and so on. I'd probably give Jones a B here in absolute terms... but an A+ for a rookie in their first preseason game. I don't remember him ever looking confused or flustered, when he decided to throw it was out IMMEDIATELY, running no huddle looked like no big deal for him. Sharp, quick, on time execution of the offense.
2. Dealing with pressure. Don't see/feel pressure, eat avoidable sacks. Get flustered by pressure and there are busted plays, picks, sacks, fumbles, you name it. Jones was under a fair amount of pressure at various points and he moved around the pocket without ever looking frantic or out of control. He took some hits and was unfazed, kept playing within the offense and didn't bail on plays too early. This was similarly one of those things where he looked good but not historically great by NFL standards, but since it's a rookie in their first live NFL action it's unusually good.
3. Physical accuracy. Not completion percent directly, but ability to put the ball where you want in space, on time. Again this is an area where Jones looked like a pretty good pro, but it's doing it this early as a rookie that makes it stand out. A lot of things can influence accuracy but starting with good mechanics from the jump is a big help, and Jones seems to be a pretty clean thrower technique-wise.

None of this guarantees he'll be good for... pick a reason (small sample size, not all played with the starters on either side, and so on) but on the flipside if it was all spray-and-pray throws and flop sweat we'd all be rightly down on his performance.

7. Bower, Davis, Adams looked good - this DL cutdown is going to be hard. (Winovich is gone)
8. we have a kicking quandary on our hands (there's a lot to like about Nordin)
9. there's no way we can keep Harry over Wilkerson

I disagree. I think it will be decided in a week after joint practices with Philly and PS game #2. We should know based on the snap count for PS game #3.

Winovich doesn't have to be gone anytime soon because he can start the season on PUP not counting toward the 53.

The Philly game decides it. I posted that months ago. BB probably doesnt say it publicly then, but Id wager a large sum his mind is made up after that game.
Mac is clearly ahead, which is what needed to happen for him to be reg season starter. But he needs a strong game vs. Philly. If he does that,hes the starter. No need for any further discussion. I have spoken.

Yea in the past typically it's the 3rd preseason game that is the dress rehearsal and the 4th is maybe a 1 series appearance for the starters to go through something then they are done for the night.

This year, is the new 2nd game the old 3rd game or is the new 3rd game the old 3rd game
