Final round cuts (Non-Patriots)

Former Patriot Kyle Love cut by Jags today.

Wow, there really must be more to his story. Going by his play last season he would easily be our #3.

Wonder if Florio will make a number of articles calling for Love to sue the Jags for "breaching his human rights" like he did when the Pats cut him

I agree that we are GREATLY improved at DT. We now have two awesome starters with no backups. I agree that Kelly is a great improvement over Love.

I agree that we had poor DT backups last year (except for Cunningham in sub packages). So, we had Brace/Forston and Deaderick. Now we have Vellano and whoever Belichick signs this week.

Isn't the reality that one of our weaknesses last year was the lack of adequate DT backups.

Again, wasn't our goal improvement in DT backup? Surely, we might have done better than Vellano and no one.

You make it sound as if BB had no plan at all. His planned backups are all on lists. Armstead on NFI, Cunningham on IR, Forston on PS, while Kyle Love would not accept NFI/IR designation, and is playing for the Jaguars.

Vellano will likely never be a star, but he may be a better than average JAG, because he hustles and plays hard.

The first plan was to keep 2-3 of Cunninham, Love and Armstead. That seemed to be a reasonable plan. When Love was unavailable for 2013, Belichick apparently (my guess) had his plan.

Of course Belichick had a Plan A, Plan B and a Plan C.

PLAN A
Cunningham and Armstead

PLAN B
One of Plan A, and one of the kids: Forston, Vellano and Grissom.

PLAN C
One of Plan A and Plan B, plus a cut from another team.

I have no reason to believe that Vellano is better than the average JAG, certainly not just because he hustles and plays hard. Many who hustle and play hard are unemployed today.
Having said that, Vellano is our #3 DT for now. He also did well enough working with the first team, that Patricia might feel comfortable in him subbing for Wilfork.

That'll be the day.

I gotta give Florio credit though - he's consistently a biased moron. He never wavers in that regard.

I agree with this, except this part. I know A.J. Francis hasn't practiced with or played a down yet in a Patriots uniform but he looks vastly superior to Vellano based upon tape study. He flashed a lot for the Dolphins and it was shocking they even tried to slip him through to waivers. To me, he's immediately the #3 DT.

Vellano might only be around as long as Armstead is on the mend.

Jags cut Jordan Shipley and Bucs cut former Patriot Tiquan Underwood.

I said that as of now, Vellano is our #3 DT. I stand by that. As we play Game One, Vellano will be the backup to Wilfork and probably Kelly. Francis may or may not even be active.

I agree that AJ looks better than Vellano based on tape study.

No one is guessing whether Armstead will be back or whether Vellano will be on the squad if and when Armstead comes back. And no one is even guessing about the Game 2 or Game 3 depth chart.

That said, I think Mallett will just wind up throwing picks that actually do us harm. BB would always prefer someone who doesn't make mistakes than a QB who makes some big mistakes along with some big plays, the phrase "game manager" comes to mind.

Mallett threw that incredibly bad pass that was picked in the end zone and also missed a very easy pass to Boyce on the left side of the field, those are 101 level plays that an NFL QB should be able to make. He's simply extremely limited, he can make some magnificent throws but they come at the cost of plenty of very bad ones. You'd think he'd work at and imprrove in these areas but it's been the same thing with him for a while.

I can definitely appreciate your concerns with Mallett. My main point is really that a move like that would have been made much earlier, so we're pretty much stuck with him for our backup role for 2013--like it or not.

Hopefully we see him either improve next season while holding down the same role in what will likely be his last season here, or Belichick decides to bring in another developmental QB to offer him a run at the QB2 position.

Either way, it's not very likely at all to happen for this particular season at this stage of the game due to the complexity of the offense. Just the knowledge alone makes Mallett the current best choice. I don't think he's been as bad as you seem to think, but I understand the underwhelming performance so far in some aspects.

So Armstead is out for at least the first 6 games then, mg? I assume the NFI list is the same as PUP in that regard.

I believe the same rules apply.

Yes, the two lists are equivalent with respect to a return to the field.

The realistic expectation of a backup QB is that they not damage their own team if the starting QB goes down, it's expected that the offense will take a hit and rely on the running game, if the QB can make some passes here and there all the better.

No, I'm not afraid to say "...it hasn't been the same thing with him for a while." You can say there has been no improvement, but I have seen lots of it.

Mallett's footwork has markedly improved with coaching, so he doesn't use his strong arm while off balance, with consequent sailing passes. He is reading Defenses pretty well, now. That testified to Belichick's observation and Mallett's newly awarded parking space, that he is committed and works hard, breaking down film. Furthermore, it indicates that he understands what he is seeing.

I often say that 90% of a QBs job occurs between his ears. After all, wasn't that concern about maturity and effort the only reason that he didn't go Top Ten? I think those concerns have been resolved.

Even if he is not yet completing 66% of his passes, they are generally going to the receiver that they should, and on time. It is clear that the game is not too fast for him.

It is also clear that Mallettt is trying to follow coaching instruction, and learn to complete his passes low to prevent INTs, and preserve the health of his receivers. Brady excels at this, and many of the good ones in the League don't even try to do so. As you would expect, it narrows the target window. Mallett is also trying to take some steam of his short passes, at the same time.

That particular accomplishment is still a work in progress, as he seems to aim too low on some of his short "touch" passes. That is keeping his completion percentage in the high 50s instead of the 60s. It is also a coachable improvement.

Mallett may not yet look as pretty as you would like, but the team responds to him, and he consistently has lead the Offense on length of field scoring marches. That my friend, is what the true measure of a successful QB has to do.

Without being traded, or suddenly required to play full time, the schedule for all the polishing that he needs, is about one more pre-season. In short, he should be ready to go or stay after the 2014 season, when his cheap rookie deal is finished.

What Tom Brady is today at 36, might not be the same when Brady is 38, going on 39. Only then will the Pats have to make a decision. :snob:

I'd highly doubt that he'd be willing to be retained on the kind of cheap, backup deal that it'd take for him to stay after next season though. He's obviously going to want to have the opportunity to compete for a starting job somewhere else, as anyone would want in his situation. Just like you, I'd probably rather that he stayed on as a backup past next season, but I think the odds of that happening are pretty slim.

In the meantime, I also think that Belichick should bring in another developmental project to start to prepare for Mallett leaving/being traded, etc. We could use someone else on the PS in my opinion.
