Final 53

The difference is one of perspective.

Of course, our starting 5 are one of the best secondaries in the NFL.

Good depth means being able to handle one injury in a unit. Great depth means able to handle two injuries.

Foe example, in he past few years, we have need to deal with 2 injuries in the OL and at LB.
=====
So, how we at safety if we lose even ONE of our top 3? All three get lots and lots of reps. Are we ready to depend on anyone else.

OK, let's look at corner, our strength, as everyone says. We have two starter types from last year, and we have a STer from last year, and a new STer. Do we have great depth? good depth?

And I am talking about people who can cover at a high level, including McCourty and Harmon.

CB depth is pretty low on the list of 'issues'. You have three who any other team in the NFL would be thrilled to have.

I don't want to see Ebner cut.
I would prefer to see Richards go

just a nitpick

I believe that Marsh will get more reps that Butler on the DL.

Special Teams

Returning special team players, with their 2016 ST snaps (min 20%):
(Note: ranks do not include those for the K, P or LS)

Rank - Name - ST Snaps
1) Nate Ebner (359)
3) Jonathan Jones (307)
4) Brandon King (299)
7) Matt Slater (226)
8) Shea McClellin (218)
9) Patrick Chung (201)
10) Alan Branch (153)
11) James Develin (151)
12) Jordan Richards (151)
13) Devin McCourty (142)
14) Duron Harmon (125)

Players with at least 20% of the Pats 2016 ST snaps, no longer on the roster:
2) Barkevious Mingo (323)
5) Brandon Bolden (264)
6) Geneo Grissom (250)

Players most likely to fill the ST void left by Mingo, Bolden and Grissom:
1) Cassius Marsh (led Seattle with 347 ST snaps in 2016)
2) Marquis Flowers (2nd on Bengals with 308 ST snaps in 2016)
3) Johnson Bademosi (5th on Detroit with 247 ST snaps in 2016)
4) Lawrence Guy (124 ST snaps with Baltimore in 2016)
5) Elandon Roberts
6) Jordan Richards
7) Harvey Langi
8) Deatrich Wise
9) Rex Burkhead (209 ST snaps) is another possibility, though I think that number will go down based on an increased role on offense this year.

A major nitpick here: remember the asinine rule that in order to activate a player from IR, the Pats actually have to carry that player on the 53-man roster at the start of the season.

So if the Pats plan to IR, say, Shea McClellin, they have to "waste" a roster spot on him for now. Thus, I strongly suspect Bolden will be back by mid-season.

Many of us were bemoaning the holes that we had on special teams. Belichick then acquired Flowers, Marsh and Bademosi. Also, Bolden may be coming back.

So, yes, Belichick values special teams very highly.

Another roster breakdown here:

New England Patriots roster analysis: Phillip Dorsett trade adds more speed to explosive offense

The Edelman injury forced the Patriots to acquire another receiver. Prior to the Dorsett trade, the depth here was shaky. Mitchell has been in and out of training camp all summer (in a brief appearance versus the Texans he appeared to be dealing with a right knee issue). Amendola has long been prone to injuries.

So Dorsett helps. He also provides another vertical threat to an offense that already had Cooks (one of the fastest players in the NFL) and Hogan (who ranked second in the league with 17.9 yards per catch a year ago).

More on that here.

INTERIOR OFFENSIVE LINE (3)
No Karras
Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason

Second-year pro Ted Karras appeared to have a strong preseason, but he was let go on Saturday. It was the most surprising cut of the afternoon.

Perhaps the Pats view Croston as a player who can provide depth at most positions across the line.

Karras was working as the backup center throughout the summer. The Pats are a little thin here. Thuney can probably play center in a pinch.

I strongly suspect that he'll be back this week. We'll find out soon enough.

As of the most recent 53 man roster it never ceases to amaze me how many new players are on this team that won the Superbowl last year, I count about 15 including 3 UDFA's.. 2 are 1st round picks from 2015 when Goodell stole our picks.

Kind of like saying to Goodell and his cronies.. "F.. you and your f..ing arbitrarily applied rules, we will get our picks back you butthole".
