Final 53 man roster thread

Not open for further replies.
We have no need for a 6th WR. I'd much rather add a backup Biggie (NT) or a backup center.

I would too, and it'll probably happen from waivers, but there's no one on the current roster at those positions worth a spot over Gunner. I also don't care that he's a 6th WR, I see him as special teams depth. He's still one of the last players on my roster.

I might be wrong, but I think the opposite is true. Many more colleges use the spread option thantwenty years ago thus not preparing QBs very well for the NFL. Twenty years ago, the majority of top QB recruits red shirted their first year and most of the best guys stayed for their senior season. Most of the NFL prospects had spent 5 years in college learning to be a pocket passer. Now, so many only have 3 years of college experience and less experience in the pocket.

Stidham had to transfer schools and supposedly played in a simplified offense at Auburn. It was known he would be raw and a project when he was drafted. He had one year at Baylor, then sat out a year attending a community college and then two years at Auburn.

I just look around the NFL and it seems most QBs are what they are from the start. Go through the teams.

Who recently was third string as a rookie and is a solid NFL starter today?

Jacoby might be one, but I think he's marginal and Hoyer is no Jimmy G.

Taking nothing away from Hoyer, but if you can not beat him out, how are you ever going to be a good enough NFL starter for our team?

My final 53 prediction:

QB (3): 12 Brady, 2 Hoyer, 4 Stidham
RB (5): 26 Michel, 28 White, 37 Harris, 38 Bolden, 46 Develin
WR (6): 11 Edelman, 88 Thomas, 10 Gordon, 13 Dorsett, __ Harry, __ Olzewski
TE (2): 83 LaCosse, 85 Izzo
OL (8): 76 Wynn, 62 Thuney, 75 Karras, 69 Mason, 61 Cannon, __ Eluemenor, 65 Cunningham, 64 Froholdt
DL (6): 77 Bennett, 93 Guy, 71 Shelton, 91 Wise, 70 Butler, 99 Cowart
EDGE (3): 55 Simon, 90 Calhoun, 50 Winovich
LB (5): 54 Hightower, __ Collins, 53 Van Noy, 51 Bentley, 52 Roberts
CB (6): 24 Gilmore, 30 McCourty, 31 Jones, 27 Jackson, 33 Williams, 35 Crossen
S (4): 32 McCourty, 23 Chung, 21 Harmon, 25 Brooks
ST (5): 3 Gostkowski, 7 Bailey, 49 Cardona, 18 Slater, 43 Ebner

  • In from my previous 53: Crossen, Olzewski
  • Out from my previous 53: Burkhead, Meyers
  • My changes are mainly to help special teams in the wake of King's injury, as I don't think I addressed it adequately before.
  • I think Burkhead is done here, I'm a late adopter of this stance though.
  • Meyers was playing in the 4th quarter last night, so he's not a lock. Unfortunately for him, Gunner has much more versatility. Maybe Meyers makes it to the PS after all, though.
  • I sure hope Froholdt is okay. If he's not, then the new guys are literally our only depth on the entire OL.
  • Cowart has flashed, but not enough (in my opinion) to make Butler cuttable.
  • I still think it's likely Wise and/or Roberts get traded, but I also think the team would rather keep them than cut them if it comes down to those 2 choices.
  • The Calhoun injury also has me concerned about depth. There's not really anyone else worth putting in that spot when you consider Rivers is in the same situation and hasn't looked as good when healthy.
  • Let's start the season!
pretty good.......my few twists on this
Hoyer could be gone if they really want to keep someone extra at another position
Wise is a matter of how much more they want to do 3-4 than 4-3....he could get beat out by kamalu or another LB
there are CB's that can double as S depth....I think that's where JWill is going to wind up though he needs a beating to finish plays.....so brooks may not be needed

PS:
Brosette - esp if burkhead is gone
DPatterson - he could be the next slater
Munson
Scooby
Gant
OL's
Kamalu
Sam

If Patterson could be the next Slater, he might be worth a 53 man spot over Crossen.

That’s only due to the fact that Chad Kelly is suspended for the first 2 games; therefore, they need a backup for a couple of weeks. I doubt they’d want to keep 3 QBs on the roster in week three and beyond. Either way, your point stands that another team could give him a look.

Unless you think they were going to cut Kelly (it's not something I'd bothered to follow, or even look into), the Colts original plan was to keep 3 QBs on the roster (Luck/Brissett/Kelly).

To those who think Meyers is being cut - I think there’s confusion. Meyers looks set to be the slot receiver of the future. That position has enormous importance in this offense and they don’t have anyone behind Edelman. Berrios isn’t the guy. Olszewski is a while away from being a receiver. Harry can do it, but he’s here to be an X. Meyers is great at those choice routes, has great hands, and it would be a shock if they let him go after a couple of sluggish performances.

My final predictions, first WWBD version:

Meyers looks like this year's Pats Training Camp Hero but won't make the top 53 IMO.
My WRs:
Edelman, Harry, Gordon, Thomas, Dorsett, Berrios, Slater

He's no Edelman but Berrios is a mix of Dola and Welker, IMO of course.

You have 51.

Two of your IR players should make the 53, and THEN be put on IR. That way they can be put on IR on Sunday, with the possibility of returning. This won't affect our ability to pick up players from waivers.

I don't think that Bill will keep Myers. There is no use for a 6th WR; the 5th is on;y meed of there is an jury or two. [This is especially true since we have at least 3 RB's who are receivers].

Gunner won’t make it to the PS.

Why would Hoyer take such a poorly paid job?

He certainly won't retire. He will wait to be cut. The team has guaranteed $1.5M of his 2019 salary, in addition to the roster bonus that was paid on march 17.

I think that Bill doesn't believe that Any of Andrews, Frodo or Rivers will return this season, so they All go straight to season-ending IR...perhaps that move will be used for Shilique Calhoun...

I don't think that Bill will keep Myers. There is no use for a 6th WR; the 5th is only needed if there is an injury or two [This is especially true since we have at least 3 RBs who are receivers].
Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Maybe Bob Kraft can convince him that there are other, ahem, side benefits to being a non-playing employee?

Sure, Kraft COULD pay beginning coaches much more than salary. I'm talking about tool compensation. I don't think that Kraft parts with his cash so easily.

I understand. Using the spots doesn't hurt the ability to make those acquisitions. We would merely have to make a cut the same day as the transaction posts.
========
EDIT
Now, I understand. You were leaving room for signing BEFORE the cut, like Bodine.

Bill's leaving two spots open for either C/G, TE, DT or STer.
