Final 53 man roster thread

Qb's today come out of the gate more ready than 20 years ago.

If Stidham isn't ready to be a #2 in his rookie season, he probably isn't an NFL starter.

Here is what I'm thinking trade Dawson
Munson starts on the PS.
You can go 6 true WRS and Gunner and Slater both can fill multiple roster Spots.
Obi sneaks in.
Deatrich Wise traded to Detroit for a 6th?
Calhoun beats him out.
Cowart makes it.
Burkhead traded.
With Harris I don't see the point of his roster spot the KC game is in the rearview mirror.
Maybe even trade Burkhead to the Texans?
Watson only tight end worthy of the 53 he's suspended for 4 games.
I hope Saubert has PS eligibility because he looks like he could develop one day.
But I'm thinking there is another Tight end we will trade for to be on our 53.

Everyone loves arguing about Crossen honestly at this point I could flip a coin either way.

So is there a strategy to when they release players?
Do they wait as long as possible on certain players to get possible trade offers?
Does the 48 hour waiver clock start the minute there released?
Do early releases have a better or worse chance to make it the practice squad?

Crossen is either in or out because of special teams.

As a cornerback he's good enough to be 6th on the depth chart.

If you are down that far IMO it's trouble no matter who.

My final 53 prediction:

QB (3): 12 Brady, 2 Hoyer, 4 Stidham
RB (5): 26 Michel, 28 White, 37 Harris, 38 Bolden, 46 Develin
WR (6): 11 Edelman, 88 Thomas, 10 Gordon, 13 Dorsett, __ Harry, __ Olzewski
TE (2): 83 LaCosse, 85 Izzo
OL (8): 76 Wynn, 62 Thuney, 75 Karras, 69 Mason, 61 Cannon, __ Eluemenor, 65 Cunningham, 64 Froholdt
DL (6): 77 Bennett, 93 Guy, 71 Shelton, 91 Wise, 70 Butler, 99 Cowart
EDGE (3): 55 Simon, 90 Calhoun, 50 Winovich
LB (5): 54 Hightower, __ Collins, 53 Van Noy, 51 Bentley, 52 Roberts
CB (6): 24 Gilmore, 30 McCourty, 31 Jones, 27 Jackson, 33 Williams, 35 Crossen
S (4): 32 McCourty, 23 Chung, 21 Harmon, 25 Brooks
ST (5): 3 Gostkowski, 7 Bailey, 49 Cardona, 18 Slater, 43 Ebner

  • In from my previous 53: Crossen, Olzewski
  • Out from my previous 53: Burkhead, Meyers
  • My changes are mainly to help special teams in the wake of King's injury, as I don't think I addressed it adequately before.
  • I think Burkhead is done here, I'm a late adopter of this stance though.
  • Meyers was playing in the 4th quarter last night, so he's not a lock. Unfortunately for him, Gunner has much more versatility. Maybe Meyers makes it to the PS after all, though.
  • I sure hope Froholdt is okay. If he's not, then the new guys are literally our only depth on the entire OL.
  • Cowart has flashed, but not enough (in my opinion) to make Butler cuttable.
  • I still think it's likely Wise and/or Roberts get traded, but I also think the team would rather keep them than cut them if it comes down to those 2 choices.
  • The Calhoun injury also has me concerned about depth. There's not really anyone else worth putting in that spot when you consider Rivers is in the same situation and hasn't looked as good when healthy.
  • Let's start the season!

My guesses: They do take time to work potential trades out, and the clock would start whenever they file the release into the official system.

If Stidham isn't ready to be a #2 in his rookie season, he probably isn't an NFL starter.

I might be wrong, but I think the opposite is true. Many more colleges use the spread option thantwenty years ago thus not preparing QBs very well for the NFL. Twenty years ago, the majority of top QB recruits red shirted their first year and most of the best guys stayed for their senior season. Most of the NFL prospects had spent 5 years in college learning to be a pocket passer. Now, so many only have 3 years of college experience and less experience in the pocket.

Stidham had to transfer schools and supposedly played in a simplified offense at Auburn. It was known he would be raw and a project when he was drafted. He had one year at Baylor, then sat out a year attending a community college and then two years at Auburn.

I'd be shocked if Meyers doesn't make the team. He's been too good all pre season and training camp. Going to be interesting to see if they can squeeze Olzewski onto the squad. I know he's a fan favorite, but other than cb, wr has become our deepest position.

I also think there's no way we go into the season with just 2 qb's.

The issue for Meyers is I think WR is still deep without him and he's in all likelihood a Chris Harper level talent.

I think he's better than Harper but the one concern I have is the one time we saw him in a game with Brady, they weren't on the same page. I still would think he's on the team though. Should be an interesting few days ahead.

I feel like Austin Carr was a more polished and better receiver than Gunner is and he was released.

I feel like Gunner has been a wr for 6 weeks and in 2 weeks will be better than Austin Carr could ever dream of being. Plus he plays ST's and can play CB like Troy Brown.

I kind of agree with Elijah, that Gunner may have won himself a job over Meyers.

The guy plays extremely hard, he has positional versatility, he plays ST, and I'll be damned if he doesn't look extremely similar to Edelman out there.

Meyers is a strong route runner and appears he could develop into a Jordan Matthew's as an ideal scenario. But he's tailed off and in terms of pure receivers the roster is deep.

Gunner can return punts and kicks, he can take handoffs and end-arounds, has defensively versatility in a pinch. Just offers so much more than Meyers at this point, and the roster needs Gunner's skillset more than it needs a 4th/5th pure receiver.

All of my roster predictions/opinions are void as of Saturday at 4 p.m. or until they are wrong, whichever comes first.

Gunner looks like a JAG to me but maybe it's just me.

He hasn't looked as good as young Edelman, but you can tell he's not a JAG because Berrios is the baseline for that.

If Berrios is the standard for anything, we got a problem

The last 5 players are often JAG's. Over the years, Belichick has done fine with a few JAG's doing OK in their roles.

That being said, I don't think Gunner is making the 53, Myers either.

We have no need for a 6th WR. I'd much rather add a backup Biggie (NT) or a backup center.
