I've been debating whether to post this comp for a while, but whatever. When I see Drake Maye play, I can't help but think of Peyton Manning in terms of his demeanor, his processing speed, his arm and his aggression. Plus, he's mobile. Obviously he's not as well-developed as Manning was coming into the league, but that's my impression. With weapons, he'd have the defense on its heels, just like Peyton. If Kraft sells the team and we get ownership that wants to win games and not reward schmoozing and trips to Israel, Maye could have multiple 50+ TD (combined passing & rushing) seasons. Allen is the most popular comp, but I think Maye will prove to be the better passer.

I've thought about this a lot. My comp before the draft was a hybrid of Allen and Herbert. He was a better processor than Allen, but not as good as Herbert. He's a better deep thrower than both, more aggressive thrower, and a better runner then Herbert but Allen is even more aggressive and has a bigger arm and a better runner but was less accurate than Maye. Herbert is not aggressive enough downfield and not as mobile but had similar accuracy to Maye.
Maye was a hybrid that took the best of each QB, just not quite as high a level, but eliminated the worst of each QB.

That was my comp before the draft.

I slightly underestimated 2 things.
-The terrible WR's at UNC and the OC at UNC were both worse than the really bad I thought they were.
-The ankle injury last year effected his running speed more than I realized.

After seeing him in the pros His processing is actually pretty elite not just the really good from college.
His running has actually been better than Allen this year and is actually elite.

I don't have access to tape for Elway, Manning, and Luck. The generally accepted top 3 QB prospects in the modern era.

He was better than Lawrence as a prospect despite what scouts thought.
Maye, Herbert, Mahomes were the top 3 in that order going back a decade as a QB prospect.

Just a Question where he went in the Elway, Manning, Luck prospect ranking but it is a different time, Elway career completion % is 56.9%, Luck career was right around 60% completion.
2003-2006 Manning was incredible and probably the true all time #1 QB prospect out of college.
Manning never had the mobility, so as a Maye comp seems off.

What is mind boggling is scouts and other teams were not unanimous in realizing how special he was. I don't know how they watch tape but many were just wrong about what Maye was in college. They over thought it.

Honestly, the reason I was willing to trade three 1st round picks for Maye, the reason I hyped him is he has no comp.
I wish he had 1/2 inch bigger hands, was an inch taller and 7 pounds heavier. If you add those things he would basically be the exact QB a computer would make for today's NFL.

He doesn't need much more around him, they will be perennial playoff contenders with just a couple high talent players added to the offense and a middle of the road defense. He's showing a below average line will be good enough, just not the worst in the league.

He's similar to Mahomes in that both can beat you with their legs and in the pocket. Maye throws more picks. But that's to be expected. Both can make any throw. That is stylistically.

I see a bit of Andy Dalton in his personality.

Allen and Herbert have been the popular present day comps, but I see more than a little Roethlisburger in his game as well.

If he can lower his interceptions a good player comp is Andrew Luck. He’s big with a big arm and sneaky fast for his size.

They need to build a great team around him, the rookie contract clock is ticking. There’s a window to win rings now.

There’s a distinct possibility Maye goes down the Andrew Luck or Joe Burrow road where his offensive line is so poor his entire career that his career ends prematurely due to injuries.

I still hold the hope that Kraft isn't getting younger, and will take the road of "I ain't f***ing around", Tom and Drew were like sons to me too.

Kraft must know that higher level brain trust is available.

I think he remained in the background, and is a bit underrated/overlooked for what he did, which was mostly staying out.

This would be a big move for Kraft, sort of the type of move that men like him do from his generation.

PS sorry I hijack every thread into get rid of these guys!

JFC, Can't anyone on this board make a point without having to slam someone as part of their post.

I found it an interesting comp but then I can't like the post because of the rest of the drivel.

What about a hybrid of Grogan and Drew

You hope he doesn't become a gunslinger that keeps both teams in games. Generally speaking, those QB's don't win many SB's.
Very few QB’s win more than one ring if any. If he ends up like Brett Favre and only gets one as a result, that’s still a huge win,

Yeah getting one would be great. I just meant in general, gunslingers do not win many titles. Brady is the Goat because he took what was there. He didn't force the ball. He could throw it 60 yards if needed. Or, he could throw it 6 yards in the flat to the RB. He threw it away & realized a punt wasn't a bad thing. It's why Bill stuck with him over Bledsoe. Bill hated turnovers.

It's hard to make comparisons with such a small sample size. He's got a little bit of everything - the athleticism, the arm talent, the ability to make quick progressions, and the willingness to make impact plays. The most impressive thing about him as a rookie is how quickly he reads a defense and go through his progressions. For as great as Mahomes is, he doesn't go through his progressions quickly and his magic happens on broken plays. Maye is more Brady/Peyton/Brees in that regard but his athleticism allows him to hold on to the ball a bit longer and take more risk. Lofty comparisons and not saying he's gonna be as good as these guys but from the small sample size the potential is there.

If he is as good as Romo & Vick were, would you consider that a success?
