I've thought about this a lot. My comp before the draft was a hybrid of Allen and Herbert. He was a better processor than Allen, but not as good as Herbert. He's a better deep thrower than both, more aggressive thrower, and a better runner then Herbert but Allen is even more aggressive and has a bigger arm and a better runner but was less accurate than Maye. Herbert is not aggressive enough downfield and not as mobile but had similar accuracy to Maye.
Maye was a hybrid that took the best of each QB, just not quite as high a level, but eliminated the worst of each QB.
That was my comp before the draft.
I slightly underestimated 2 things.
-The terrible WR's at UNC and the OC at UNC were both worse than the really bad I thought they were.
-The ankle injury last year effected his running speed more than I realized.
After seeing him in the pros His processing is actually pretty elite not just the really good from college.
His running has actually been better than Allen this year and is actually elite.
I don't have access to tape for Elway, Manning, and Luck. The generally accepted top 3 QB prospects in the modern era.
He was better than Lawrence as a prospect despite what scouts thought.
Maye, Herbert, Mahomes were the top 3 in that order going back a decade as a QB prospect.
Just a Question where he went in the Elway, Manning, Luck prospect ranking but it is a different time, Elway career completion % is 56.9%, Luck career was right around 60% completion.
2003-2006 Manning was incredible and probably the true all time #1 QB prospect out of college.
Manning never had the mobility, so as a Maye comp seems off.
What is mind boggling is scouts and other teams were not unanimous in realizing how special he was. I don't know how they watch tape but many were just wrong about what Maye was in college. They over thought it.
Honestly, the reason I was willing to trade three 1st round picks for Maye, the reason I hyped him is he has no comp.
I wish he had 1/2 inch bigger hands, was an inch taller and 7 pounds heavier. If you add those things he would basically be the exact QB a computer would make for today's NFL.
He doesn't need much more around him, they will be perennial playoff contenders with just a couple high talent players added to the offense and a middle of the road defense. He's showing a below average line will be good enough, just not the worst in the league.
