Devin Mccourty

He's there to prevent the 200 yard pass play.
Well played sir
I think McCourty's instructions are: "Tackle the wide open WR at the 5 and we''ll try to hold them to a FG....but what ever you do....don't lay any wood"

McCourty is worth what he's paid. If he wasn't back there, you'd see the difference and it would be night and day.

Like teams getting the ball with less than a minute left and being able to march right down the field for a TD?

Comparing Devin's stats to Earl Thomas' stats is like comparing Vince Wilfork's stats to Suh's stats. They're players who have the same position but are asked to do very different things dependent on scheme.

Yeah they shouldn't be comapred.

Earl Thomas is going to the hall of fame. He's the centerpiece in one of the greatest single season defenses ever(2013 Hawks) and one of the overall great defensive team runs ever(2012-Present).

Devin Mccourty is a nice player who will be remembered fondly by patriots fans. There's levels to this ****

If this team had a good cover corner they could do alot of things. Play press or man. They wouldn't be scared to rush 4. McCourty did very well when revis was here.

But that's the problem. You can't pay McCourty top-of-market money, and then say, well if he only had better corners, he'd look better. One of the reasons you can't have better DBs is that you're paying DMC $10M. It's up to the franchise player to make the other guys look better, not the other way around.

Chung is not playing at the same level as last 2 years. He was the best tackler and played with lot of emotions. He is still one of top 3 players on defense.

DM has played well this year, i'm not sure what else we expect from him. He's a cog in the machine, but it takes 11 players to be great on defense.

Aaron Donald is the best DT in football, yet their line isn't the best in the NFL. Jets have the best D-Line in football but their secondary stinks so their defense is weak. The point is we are weak at the D-Line and our secondary is paying the price for having to cover guys longer

Sure...

Both these guys did not return to the game after those hits.

The rams d line's very good. They have guys like brockers as well. One enforcer on the d line can make other's great. They also have one of the best unknown corners in trumaine johnson. He will be an unrestricted free agent.

Great hits....on an ex-Pats flunky and while guarding the 5 yard line THREE years ago. I saw several of these kinds of hits by Seattle's safeties in just one half....I just wish McCourtey had more game changing moments given his tax bracket

Must've missed several of our players leaving the game and not return against the Seahawks...

Look, the point is not comparing them to the LOB, there is a reason they are called LOB. The Seahawks are special, it's not like every safety out there is hitting like they do. Chancellor is big and strong and Thomas has great instincts that enables him to really pick up speed when delivering a hit. But the point that McCourty never delivers hits is plain wrong.

And to add another point, McCourty has one of the best tackle rates for a safety in the NFL the last few years. He practically never misses any tackles. Yeah, Thomas and Chancellor hit harder on a way more frequent basis. But they also miss more tackles than McCourty. I guess though some here would prefer McCourty to miss tackles in order to blow people up...

Joe Haden isn't walking through that door folks. This is what we have to work with.

at Patriots.com the background image has "McCourty vs. Doug Baldwin" charity drive. I'm thinking Baldwin's 3 TDs against Pats defense gives him the win.

I'm laughing hard at people going after McCourty so much in these threads.

He's played at an elite level this year in nearly every single game... the defense as a whole against the Hawks had lots of problems, the main one being that we could not generate any pass rush on Wilson, and the times we did manage to do that he just scrambled out of the pocket and made great passes to wide receivers

The secondary was pretty garbage most of the game.. they would have their moments but then have a total breakdown on a key 3rd down, etc, but part of that was because they were being asked to cover WRs for a long ass time

This zone scheme is one that Belichick has ran countless times against mobile quarterbacks because if you play man to man, then all the DBs backs are turned to the QB and he scrambles for 10+ yards every time unless you have a spy, but we traded Collins who was our best spy player and even still, guys like Wilson, Newton, etc can and will break a tackle or make a guy miss

Mccourty is being used as a scape goat I see, which is hilarious because we've lost so much talent on this defense and now people are turning on one of our captains and best defensive players, in some cases blaming him for plays that weren't even his responsibility in the first place

There were a lot of bad luck plays in that game, meaning low percentage plays that Seattle kept converting for one flukey reason or another. the other thing to mention is that the Hawks vaunted defense that everyone is so jealous of had countless breakdowns themselves, including a 3rd and 25 that the Pats successfully converted late in the 4th quarter

Bottom line, the Seahawks are an extremely talented team that is well coached and are one of the best in the league. it came down to a 4th and 1 at the goal line to send it into overtime with them, so the sky certainly isn't falling.. its not like they got blown out, they nearly pulled the win out despite unusual turnovers, broken coverages, etc ... and Wilson was making some plays that just about no other QB in the league could pull off, which was super frustrating but you have to tip your hat to him, they just out played us and the end result speaks for itself

It was a painful ending, but I'm not going to throw the towel in because we BARELY lost to one of the best teams in the league after jettisoning our most talented defensive player, which had a shock factor to the team similar to the Lawyer Miller scenario awhile back

People need to relax, we're into week 11 with only 2 losses and are relatively healthy compared to last year. . the defense might have to deal with some growing pains getting use to not having Collins anymore, but they can continue to gel and improve

also it's important to understand why we aren't getting pressure sometimes, and that's often because we're against a mobile QB and the lines job BY DESIGN is to contain the QB in the pocket and force him to make some throws.. it works more often than it doesnt, and against guys like Wilson, Rogers, Newton, etc there are going to be days when they get the best of us.. that's why they're some of the top QBs in the game right now, because theyre extremely talented and you aren't going to win 100% of the time against them

Didn't Mass just legalize weed? Spark up a fatty and RELAX

Zero pass rush
Poor CB play

I don't know what people expect?

People really don't understand that if ANY QB has 5s to think and stay in the pocket, some dude will get open? Its IMPOSSIBLE to cover all the guys for 5s/6s every play... Patriots lack of pass rush is the number #1 problem by far ... Butler is a GREAT #1 CB, Ryan is ok for number 2

Brady was really avg sunday, and even with that kind of performance we lost by a single possession ...

Post 2014 Joe Haden would not be a big improvement anyway. Except in the expenditures department.

Last year's Ryan was a solid #2 CB. This year's Logan Ryan is pretty terrible and letting up a lot of yards even when factoring in the lack of a pass rush. He just isn't playing well and on top of that has his struggles exacerbated by the D-line not providing help.

Last year Sheard was really good. That happens Ryan is ok... I would rather have him cheap and focus our picks on DE / DT / LB
