Deshaun Watson? (UPDATED: Caserio Says Team Has "no interest" in trading him)

This cracks me up: "The Texans are expected to receive a haul in exchange for Watson, and their return could only increase with so many teams interested. "

Hey Jordan (author of the article), I don't think you understand how this works. It doesn't matter if all 32 teams ask to trade for him, it will not increase his value because the Texans can only trade him to the team of his choice (no trade clause). If Watson was smart, he'll pull a page out of Anthony Davis' playbook and tell the Texans that he will only play for team x,y and z. The less the better to preserve as many future assets as possible. Then have his team of people leak it out publicly so it will erase a lot of leverage from the Texans. They now have two options: do nothing and count on him caving or trade him for what they can get from the team of his choice. Caserio would be smart to just ignore it for now unless Watson starts to use the cheat code and trash the organization publically. In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if Watson caves and returns.

Much of this has already been done.

Watson supposedly gave them a list of teams he'd go to.

Then via social media, hints have been coming in. "Likes" of posts related to a certain team. His agent saying something (a car I think) would look great in "Jet Green". Watson posting on Instagram hanging in NY/NJ.

Then word Watson had actually asked for a trade weeks ago. As in before the coach he publicly wanted was hired by anyone.

I'm actually pretty psyched about seeing Sam with a new coach/scheme and what will be a massively overhauled team with so much draft capital and cap space.

With that said... can't deny the smoke here. There's almost certainly a fire.

A 25 year old top 3 QB can't be passed up if the opportunity is there. Sorry Sam.

Hr had Miami/NYJ on his list all houston has to do is make them bid against each other. Considering they both have two 1sts and 2nds this year Houston will be getting two number ones and a second at the least one being top 3

The real problem is that 3 1sts might not be much of a compensation in the end for Caserio.
The 1rd picks of the team you trade Watson to will all be at the bottom. Jetes 2nd overall alone is worth 4 bottom 1st round picks (25-28) f.e..
In that case you need ok form the owner to burn it down and tank for QB w your own pick next yr. Or Texfans will burn the place down.
The problem is that that could create a serious setback to establishing new culture.

This is a nightmare situation with only few trades making at least some “sense“.
With Jetes or Dolphins at least you get fresh start with similar QB talent to Watson and some picks and cap to work with.

So even if they do “agree“ on moving on - can they agree on destination/compensation?
My guess is Watson eyes SBs vs Mahomes. HOU would prefer NFC as well in principle. Could they agree on Atlanta?
And would Atlanta really be that much different - the perennial losers w 12 yrs of franchise QB?

Watson would probably like Rams or SF but i doubt sensible compensation is there to make it work partly due to cap as well..

The time is also not a friend of Caserio here, the waiting game will only make the nightmare grow.

PS
The Miami trade would make the insanity of Tunsil trade perfect: two franchise QBs & change for OT you can get in every draft
#2 is definitely better than #15 but by how much and how much will NYJ offer? You have your pick of anyone not named Lawrence but now, you're at best, the same or worse? Like you still have to build a whole team and if NYJ or MIA isn't offering a haul besides a top 5 pick I don't see it getting done.

I'm looking at it this way. Houston is going to be bad so their future picks are top 10 worthy. NE might be bad next year with or without Watson so that could be two top 15 picks, plus w/e else we're offering.

What if we go 15, 2022 1st, 2023 1st & 3rd, Jackson & Harris?

Compared to say ...

#2, 23 & 2nd from NYJ

Who knows. I just think NE has a real shot with an offer like that. Three 1st, 3rd and even just Jackson is a viable offer imo. Let's not forget that while JC might in the Revis or Sherman tier he's been a legit top 10-15 CB for two years. And Harris is a more than serviceable back on the cheap. It'll be interesting to see what they get of it carries that way.

Watch watson lose on the Jets too. I think he's extremely talented. But the organization is a mess.

Dolphins would be scary with him

Honestly the Dolphins with Watson would be the favorites to win the division. Flores is really doing a good job with those guys, if Fitzpatrick didn't catch COVID in Week 17 they would probably have made the playoffs. Another year of development with his system with those guys will make them better. That said - losing so many picks hurts too. You'd have to hope that Watson and Parker mesh well. I'd take Tua for a 2nd if they don't send him to Houston.

I said before , many great QB's also had to deal with weak rosters and got the W's.

Mahomes
Brady
Rodgers
Wilson
Big Ben
Brees
Lamar
Matt Ryan
Josh Allen
Rivers ?
Why do people keep putting a RB on their list of QBs?

I've been to NYC & FLA many times, and lived in TX for a decade...

NYC is a Sh!thole, the Armpit of America...The next time I have to go there will be too soon...WAY too soon...
My son brought his Chinese wife there last year. She came from Beijing, a city 3 or 4 times the size of NYC, and she wanted no part of it and couldn't get out fast enough because they have "too many crazies."

The fact that anyone would choose to be a Jete is remarkable. Almost unbelievable.
Just because a player has a destination that he prefers in a trade it doesn't mean that the team has to trade him.
If I'm in the position the Texans are in then I tell Watson to play.
If he sits out the entire season what happens to his salary cap hits?

I hope the NFL doesn't start to become the NBA with guys forcing trades. Watson willingly signed that huge deal just in September now wants off the team.

He was dumb to sign that deal with a team he was just weeks, if not days, removed from a major disagreement with. But the situation has only gotten worse since then.

When two parties sign a contract, they both have an end of the deal to uphold. Houston has been categorically failing their part.

Also, the alternative to players having "too much power" is management having "too much power". Who actually puts their body on the line and gets the fans watching?

BDM

I don't know the ramifications if a player doesn't honor his deal. Looking at the CBA for the NYFL tells me it doesn't favor the players and the owners hold all the cards.

This is still America (for now) you can still refuse to work, granted he will be fined for breaking his contract, but those fines are almost never enforced once the impass passes. I don't think the NFL can pass a rule saying that you can't hold out. It would be unAmerican.
The nfl passed a rule saying the camp fines cannot be forgiven. So if watson holds out, it's 50k a day, mandatory.

It seems like Watson is sticking to his guns about getting out of Houston.

Houston controls his rights, but Watson can hold out creating a major distraction that no team wants.

Not to mention Houston missing out on the draft capital they'd get for tading him.

Option 1: Keep a QB who doesn't want to be there, and have a horrible team as the QB sits out.

Option 2: Trade the QB and start a rebuild with a new young QB and other pieces from draft capital, under the new coach.

Gotta imagine the new coach prefers option 2.

New England would be a natural fit with the same red white and blue jersey color

This isn't the NBA. If he doesn't play he loses a ton of money yes ? The Texans can sit tight and wreck his career. His agent using logic should explain the leverage is not in his favor. Also it's not like the NBA where football stars somehow have a say in personnel decisions.

.

Watson can simply accept the fan fines, and Play Game 1, with no camp. HOU can what it wants.
