Damar Hamlin Updates

Agree. I was chiefly concerned about his neurological disposition but seems like he'll be ok in that regard.

Don't they run cardiology tests before players even enter the league? If not, it should be mandatory.

This IS great news. The key words in the above text is "neurologically intact".

That being said it SHOULD be noted that Hamlin's cardiac arrest may have very little to do with him playing football. I watched this play over and over again and in NO way could I consider it a "hard hit" in any context. When the Lions guy who DID die on the field, it was found at autopsy that he had the heard of a 60 year old and it had nothing to do with him playing football.

I hope in 60 years from now when they finally do Hamlin's autopsy they could very well find some abnormalities that would explain this. OR it just might have been just that one in a million event where a bump to the chest at JUST the wrong time caused the electrical failure that led to the stopping of his heart.

I'm also getting a little pissed at the player driven narrative that they are risking their lives every time they go on the field. The game's been being played for over a HUNDRED years and Hughes has been the ONLY death and THAT one was proven that football wasn't the reason he died that day. The whole drama of this event IMHO has become a bit overblown. Too much attention has been directed to the drama and how the suspension will affect the playoffs and NOT enough paid to the first responders who ACTUALLY saved the guy's life. Don't you find it odd that NO one can name even ONE guy who saved Hamlin's life?

Now that being said, professional football players are playing a Violent game, where serious injury IS a constant risk. But they are also being VERY well paid for that risk, even at the bottom of the roster. Who is more at risk. An NFL player making a Million a year or a coal miner working a lot of overtime to make $100,000
you watched over and over again. We all did. All the the medical people interviewed that have speculated CC did. Not one them has said that the hit looked too soft for it to occur. In fact many times there's no evidence of trauma on the patient at all. Like you said the odds that this happens is extremely low but it does happen 30 times a year. I agree that first responders are severely underpaid but it takes a team to get a patient like Hamlin to recover. They're all life savers.

Depends on the team. EKGs, stress tests, etc can be part of pre-draft. They may even do it during a FA visit.

Do we know if Hamlin had an irregularity?

We've all heard of a heart punch. Seems pretty simple to me. @Ian posted a picture that captured the moment pretty clearly. It looks like the kid got caught in making a high tackle. Regardless, it seems we heard good news today, so that's pretty sweet.

This was the photo in the NY Post that they posted yesterday:

Shoulder struck him square in the chest.

I’d be extremely surprised if they don’t. Too much liability exposure if they don’t take such obvious precautions.

When you say 30 times a year, do you mean it happens 30 times a year in the NFL or in the US, or in the world? It's kind of an important distinction.

If it happens 30 times a year in the US (which I suspect is what you meant) then the one in a million chance I mentioned in my post would rise to 1 in 31,000,000. I just worry about the thousands of mothers who aren't going to let their kids play the game that shaped MY life and MILLIONS of other kids over the years just like me because of this extremely rare incident.

Plan on it. Karen isn't about to let Little Timmy play, regardless of what her ex-husband (the pig) says.

This is great news! Hope he's going to be ok now and fully recovers. What happened to Hamlin reminds us of the mortality of the players who risk their lives for our enjoyment.

Per https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmra0910111 14 cases in football over 15 year period (1995-2010) but read the authors concerns regarding cased being potentionally underreported.

Right Its like winning pwerball and being stuck by lighting twice. The 30 times a year is world wide but mostly in the US. I agree people are going way overboard saying things like this shows how violent and dangerous football is.

World wide you say? WOW! I wonder why we get most of them? Anyway, thanks for the data. BTW I just bought my 250MM to one shot to be a billionaire. Good luck to all. It would great if someone on the board won.

My guess is because we dig deeper looking at causes for arrests. Agree on MM!

The first responders need to be given season tickets for life if Damar makes a full recovery. This post is the best news yet. Amazing.
Has even any ONE of them been identified yet? I guess "save a life" and join the witness protection program.

God! We spend endless hours "celebrating" all the pseudo-celebrities, wanna bees and losers. Why can't we spend a MINUTE to say thanks to those who saved us from a real tragedy. You would think SOMEONE in the media would be following up on this. It's so easy. "MEET THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SAVED HAMLIN'S LIFE" Then do a 2 line simple bio of everyone on the field that night. How much "investigating" would it take. Even Volin could do it.
