Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

Well said as usual, I agree with your idea of crapping or get off the pot.
Gonzalez is great, but the lack of int's are telling.
No need for this much drama, the offer of the Pats is reasonable.
Darrelle Revis had several years at the height of his abilities when he had low interceptions.

0, 2, 2, 1. Those were his totals over 4 years when he played 13, 16, 16, 15 games.

He averaged 2.6 INTs per season.

Disagree Ken, Gonzalez is the hardest CB in football to throw against, and he has only allowed 1 touchdown in 3 years, which imo is much more important than interceptions, and he's an excellent run defender, that is not something that just comes and goes. Top corners don't get as many interceptions because teams do everything they can to throw away from them.

That said I don't think they should give him Will Anderson or Myles Garrett money. I would offer him the highest CB money by more than a million per, and give him the most guaranteed money, but not escalate clauses that keep him there throughout the deal. Put the deal in the table and leave it there, he can sign it when he wants 209 million plus in his pocket, if he doesn't then have him play out the deal plus a franchise year, until or unless he decides to sign it.
The Patriots need to evaluate him as a player AND for the value of his position.

If they feel he changes games the way Sanders, Revis and Woodson did, he may get a lot more than Witherspoon. But if they think you can get by playing zone with many good to very good CBs, then they don't value the position.

For instance, you might say that Gonzalez's impact on the game is even great than Jeffrey Simmons and Quinnen Williams, and that he should be paid as much as them, but if you don't value the position as much as DTs, then you trade him. I could see this argument.

My problem with the Patriots right now: they traded a future 1st round draft choice for AJ Brown who has 2 years, maybe 3 to give us. Now is not the time to be trading our top players for future draft picks, not when you went all in on a 30 yr old WR with a big contract.

It's counterintuitive.

2026-2027 $20M
2028-2032 $96M

What are you suggesting as an additional bonus, or do you expect some of the $96M to be moved to bonus?
What are you suggesting as the guarantee?

If the additional compensation for 2026-2027 is zero, I would wonder why Gonzo's folks are even talking. The amount must be more.
Witherspoon got a 26 million dollar signing bonus. So of that 96 million having nearly 25% of it in your bank account today makes it worth while even if the team does accounting tricks for when it counts on the cap. All the player cares about is how much of it they get now and guaranteed. You can keep the next two years numbers exactly the same, hell even lower them if you want to go all in, and the player will still sign for the money today signing bonus.

Kraft is at the bottom of the league in actual cash spending.

The longer this drags out, the more it leans in favor towards the Pats. If he wants to be the highest paid player in 2028, then he can wait until then.

Pats made a mistake prematurely signing Barmore who still had one year left on his rookie deal. Had he not been foolishly approached by the Pats, he’d be on prove it deals.

Had BB listened to many of you guys pounding the tables for paying any draft pick that breathes in a Pats jersey, the salary cap would’ve been a mess during the 20 year run.

BB only signed two draft picks early and they were Gronk and Hernandez. The rest of the relevant draft picks sweat out their rookie deals where Bill evaluated whether it was worth it to re-sign them.

Gonzalez needs to take the win and doesn’t seem to realize the Pats don’t normally do this.

Branch would have been signed if he gave up holding out.

I wonder if this gets to the point of Gonzo holding out and not playing vs Seattle?

What better way to prove your value to the Pats than to have JSN go ape on national TV in front of the whole country. From the Pats standpoint they cannot agree to a contract like the one rumored to be wanted by Gonzo. If Gonzo gets it then why not Maye? Furthermore, would not a sweet deal like that spread like fire to other teams across the NFL?
