So he wasn't a reactionary move. He was the plan all along.

Interesting news: Amendola signed with the Patriots on Tuesday. NE did not react to Denver, they made choice when Welker went to market

With Amendola ready to sign and Welker seeking 8 to 9 million and making visits, Pats moved on Amendola rather than drag feet and lose out.

I hope this puts to rest all the 'cheapskate' BS people have been posting.

Amendola Signed By Pats On Tuesday

Just heard on WEEI online radio that Pats signed Amendola on Tuesday But Announced it yesterday (Wed) after Broncos signed Welker.
If so, why leave us hangin that Welker can still be here or/and did BB actually want both of them? thoughts???

On the surface, this makes a little more sense to me now. I may not agree with the ultimate decision, but I can see it going like this:

1) Welker hits free agency, looking for 8-9 million per season.

2) Patriots, thinking some team will overextend a bit and offer that, assume he's gone and move on to plan B (Amendola).

3) Welker finds out no one is willing to go that high, and gets the 2/12 offer from the Broncos.

4) When he brings it back to the Patriots, they say, "Well, now we have redundancy at your position, so we're only willing to go 2/10 with incentives."

5) Welker says peace.

Just posted this thread, great minds think'alike can merge mine.

If that is true, BB is running an airtight ship...word of it did not come out until BB wanted it to come out....WOW

Also means nobody in the media has a source worth a damn

I don't get why they wouldn't have announced it on Tuesday, but it would seem to make sense in light of all the other news that has come out about it. Unless maybe they still wanted Wes for a lower price so didn't want the Amendola signing to drive up his price? Its a shame though that they couldn't of had both.

Bedard said the Pats were prepared to sign Amendola AND re-sign Welker.

My thinking is that they still wanted Welker but at a cheap price. With the perception that Amendola was still in the market, other teams may not have been as desperate to give money to Welker. It also would have made Welker more money than they were offering.

So they were planning on getting both?

They wanted Amendola and Welker (on the cheap only). They were ready to roll with both if Welker on the cheap. One can make the argument that Welker on the cheap means no Welker but at this point it doesn't matter.

So was Welker seeking 8 to 9 mill from the pats not 6? That wasn't clarified.

In the end Pats made their choice time to move on I say.

I wonder if Welker knew about it. I can't imagine he'd be happy about Amendola possibly taking his reps.

If they announced they sign Amendola on Tuesday it could have created a more competitive market for Welker, driving his price up and the Pats out of the bidding game.

Sure, Welker was now worth $5M a year, with an undetermined amount guaranteed.

They're different players. No Welker means Amendola will see more time in the slot than if they had gotten both, but either way, Amendola was going to be much more of an outside player than Welker. That's where the extra height and speed comes in handy.

I'm buying this. Once Welker made his intentions known that he was looking for 8-9MM Pats decided to go with plan B (Amendola) to risk not having a key player at the slot position.
