Yet all have as good a chance of replacing Wes Welker as Julain Edelman does.
I'll admit it, I LOL'd. But just watch, the kid's got potential.

There are still people who think that Edelman can give us even a tenth of what Welker does at WR?
Anyone who thinks that is defective. Welker's skill-set consists of more than being short and white. There are a lot of other, very important traits that Edelman simply doesn't possess.

Again, the small sample we have where his role on the team was exactly that of Welker's, he provided roughly 85% of the average production Welker provides. I understand doubting his abilities based on the past two seasons, but it's because he's not getting snaps. And he's not getting snaps for two reasons: he's a slot receiver and WW is a slot receiver. When Edelman's produced in the past, it's been for the same reasons Welker has, good routes, good separation, good hands, and good yards after the catch.
And just so nobody misinterprets my opinion as Welker-hating, I'll be clear that I do want Welker back. I just think the Pats need to cap WR spending so they can invest more on defense. This is a Brady-centric offense, not a Welker-centric offense. I'd offer him 4 years 32 million: 2012 - $3 mill base, $3 mill bonus, 2013 - $4 mill base, $ 4 mill bonus, 2014 - $4 mill base, $4 mill bonus, 2015 - $4 mill base - $6 mill bonus. Would his agent laugh in my face? Maybe, but I'd point out David Givens', David Patten's, Deion Branch's, and Jabbar Gaffney's numbers after leaving New England. If he doesn't accept that, tag him and let him explore his options. If he wants to stick around after being tagged, offer him slightly more on the backend. If he wants to hold out for excessive compensation, trade him.

NFL contract do not have split salary and bonusses in each year. And just so nobody misinterprets my opinion as Welker-hating, I'll be clear that I do want Welker back. What does what a player did with another team have to do with Welkers importance to this team?Would his agent laugh in my face? Maybe, but I'd point out David Givens', David Patten's, Deion Branch's, and Jabbar Gaffney's numbers after leaving New England.

I think a "market deal" here is in the Top 10 WR Salary range. I said $6 mill, and I'm sticking with it. All the WR salary info I've been able to find show that as being comparable for that range. But, as I just said, Welker may see his value as Top 3, and he could use certain numbers to back that up. So no, we don't all know that Welker won't hold out. You're projecting your beliefs onto the player just because you don't want him play hardball for a big payday and you don't understand how the business end of the game works. Maybe not the game itself either since you want to pay top dollar for a slot receiver when you have a backup slot receiver that provided 85% of his production in a 5-game stretch.
That's pretty naive of ya buddy. Welker will play hardball.
Not to ruin your day some more, but Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and unicorns don't exist.
If you think Welker is going to ask for anywhere near top 3 money you're insane. He'll be perfectly fine with about 6 or 7 million per, depending on the length of the contract. He'll seriously consider any offer that isn't downright insulting.
The potential problem here is on the Pats' end. They kind of have him over a barrel since no other team is going to value him as much as the pats. He might get 3-4 million elsewhere and the Pats will might negotiate with him accordingly, ala Mankins (which would be a mistake IMO).
However I think BB and the FO are too smart not to get an extension done with a guy who's basically irreplaceable.

Top ten WR money is at least $8.4M and that is a fact because it's the transition tag # this year the formula for which is based on the top 10 WR salaries over the last 5 seasons...
Logan Mankins and 2010 was that long ago? Granted his holdout didn't last all season, but a half year without Wes would be pretty tough to overcome. And I can reasonably project he will not hold out because it's a simple fact that no tagged player has held out in over a decade.
He is a good special teamer who has versatility. As a real WR, no, he doesn't.
The franchise tag number, I have see quoted in the 9.5M range, is for the top 5 salaries over the last 5 years

Personally I think Wes should get AT LEAST more than Steve Smith or Miles Austin based upon his production, so 8.7M per would be the floor.

Well he did drop that pass in the SB, you know.
Sadly I expect this chess game may play out with the relatively affordable tag being placed on him - with Welker just as understandably opting to sit out until week 10 to protect himself and provide leverage.
