Covington and AVP

The defense has regressed massively under Covington

Not sure Hightower has done much to justify his role either. Too many of the coaching staff seem to want to be one of the guys.

I think the new guys that were players are still in their player mindset and still want to be players and as you said one of the guys. As we have seen, this can’t be. Coaches/leaders of the org are in a different tier and can’t be rubbing elbows etc. They need to be able to coach.

With personnel decisions like that, Mayo was doomed. (Mind you, the collapse of the defense was surely his responsibility.)

it wasn't the lack of talent that doomed Mayo. It was his inability to game plan on the defense. If he can't do that, what use is he?

That it Mayo is not an X's and O's guy and it shows.

Could be........
By firing both the HC & OC, this signals to potential offensive minded HC candidates the driveway has been plowed, drive right in.
And if you want to toss more rubbish once you arrive, have at it.

No one other than Mayo, as of now, has been fired.

I think the Krafts are waiting for Belichick to pick from the coaching staff. If Belichick steals Covington from the Patriots, they don't have to pay him the rest of his contract. I doubt we will see any coach that Belichick might potentially steal being fired until the Pats hire a new coach or Belichick steals them for UNC.

Basically it will be a game of chicken between Belichick and Kraft. Belichick would love to get Patriots staff members for pretty much free. Kraft would love to not have to pay out the contracts on these people. Who blinks first.

Still siting Ben Volin's "report". No other news outlet has confirmed his firing.

He's still with the team as of this morning.

Not sure AVP was such a disaster as people think. The whole "bad roster" story line was mostly on the offense, it was AVP who suffered the vast lack of talent on OL and WR. And no one expects a rookie QB to win, though he developed quite well considering.
That rightly did not save Mayo's job - because the D was almost fully in tact from last year (though missing Bentley & Barmore was big).

I get that a new HC will want his own coord's, but ownership may have something to say about keeping some consistency in order to not hamstring a VERY important step in the future of the franchise - Maye's sophomore leap.
* I like the AVP as QB coach idea.

AVP was probably the best coach on the staff, and there is the problem. He deserves credit for development of Drake. However the rookie WRs all regressed. AVP is just collateral damage from firing mayo.

I did. It's not only reported by volin other sources are citing it as well. Everyone can't be wrong arch.
Who else? I'll believe it when NBC, CBS or ESPN reports it. AVP is likely to be fired but hasn't yet. He wants to be first rather than right so piggybacked on Schefter's Mayo Fired tweet.

What do you make of this Mark Daniel's tweet saying no one else on the Pats has been fired as of this morning?

If they fire AVP before Covington - that is a major problem.
I hope they don't have the same blinders they had when firing BB to anoint Mayo.
Covington "ran" the D - and it became instantly horrible - weak, soft, undisciplined, unable to adjust in-game.

And the development of Milton.

If Milton keeps on that trajectory that is huge.

Milton has the physical talent of the #1 overall pick, if slightly old.
