Concerned About JE11

I really am beginning to think there may be some sandbagging going on with Edelman. I think BB looked at last year and how the offense fell apart without Jules and said "never again". Hence all the new WRs. I think using all their weapons has become a point of focus this year, and that means not targeting Jules 15 times a game. This approach has the added benefit of reducing wear and tear on Edelman as well. My gut tells me they are lulling people a bit and Jules is going to go off one game when people think he can't.

Couple/few notable points:

--Edelman still leads all offensive weapons in both snaps and targets

--Last time Belichick was concerned with the offense falling apart if 1-2 guys were taken away, he went out and drafted two shiny new TEs in Hernandez and Gronkowski. It may not be a coincidence that Martellus Bennett was brought in to pair with Gronk

--Not sure where the idea of "all the new WRs" is coming in since it was really Hogan and a mid-round draft pick rookie who is seeing about 10 percent of all snaps, but I get where you're going with this

Mostly in agreement.

Is Edleman a bit limited, perhaps, but he's a go to guy when we need to get open/yards.

Brady is playing with his new toys, Bennett and Hogan with great success and probably trying to expand their ability to play within the system. Brady isn't forcing throws to people and still hitting the open guy. So it may be that defenses are focusing on Edleman and this may limit his production.

Really seems to me that Brady has 4+ effective targets to consider on every pass play...that's glorious.

But they had a slew of WRs through during the offseason and camp. I think they are very comfortable with Amendola, Hogan, Mitchell, Gronk and Bennett as their pass-catching grouping (with White/Lewis) if JE were out.

I also bet JE lobbied for that PR job once it was clear Jones wasn't ready (although Amendola is coming off an injury too).

I'm thinking it's a mixture of both. Sure, the team has more overall weapons in 2016 in both the passing and running game thus far than it did in 2015. But I tried to watch Edelman as much as I could during the Bengals game and I wouldn't be surprised if the foot was bothering him too. He had trouble consistently getting separation in the few times that I was able to see his full route develop. So it may be a mixture of both as I would have to believe that he would be Brady's primary read on most of the route trees in this offense on any given Sunday. He was also doubled by the Bengals a lot early on as well.

JE to Kyed "We don't play fantasy football, we play winning football". I bet these players do get tired of hearing about their stats or lack there of.

Offense isn't just him and Gronk anymore.

But if he is being hampered by something, imagine this offense when he gets back to his usual self

First thing is that this was a great matchup for Gronk and he is the most dominant non-QB player in the league. If the matchup has him playing as a WR he's always the first look because he is a beast.

Saying that JE looked fine last game, Bengals can rush the middle and they have speed at LB (which is why Gronk was moved more outside). This game we could see JE breakout if the middle of the field is more open. Lets not say the sky is falling when it isn't

Edelman wasn't at his absolute best but I am not worried about it moving forward.

When Brady has needed a 3rd down he has been able to go to Edelman over these last few games and get it. As long as that is the case I am not overly concerned.

Not trying to start a sky is falling thread but I'm concerned that he has re-injured his foot and that seemingly has hampered his ability to run the kind of routes and make the kind of cuts that make him so special. Seemed like he and TB12 were out of sync on a couple of plays. Not sure if its footwork-related, etc.

With that said, clearly the foot is healthy enough to return kicks and punts which he did a bang-up job of yesterday so not 100% sure I am right.

Anybody else noticing what I think I'm seeing?

I think we were all concerned for a while, but after a slow start, Edelman has finished the season strong. Believe it or not, he leads the NFL in receiving yards and yards from scrimmage!

He's low-key been back to his first half of 2015 form (AKA the best football of his career) since Gronk went down.

Concern for JE11...

Squirrel puts up the Highest yards total of his career

ROTFL!!!

I didn't see this was an old thread and assumed it was RE: the slight limp he had after a play yesterday. That looked like a minor injury that will heal before the next game, is that the diagnosis?

I'm more concerned about the pounding and hoping he doesn't end up with his wits addled like Welker. OTOH reports have him dating a supermodel not a hooters gal so maybe I'm being alarmist.

I don't think you can say enough good things about JE this year. He's playing every game with his hair on fire - he brings the whole team up beside him. Next to TB, he's the emotional leader of the Pats, and he's damned good at it. Ferocious dude.

Being hurt all year (or far from 100%) Julian has had a bit of an off year (for him). I also actually think some of the drops are related to his foot not being 100%. He actually has to think about what used to come naturally and that is what's he going to do after the catch. How does he plant foot, does he cut inside / cut outside (using healthy foot for initial change of direction plant as often as possible). He's tough as nails and I'm obviously hoping he plays a big role in the playoff run.

Jules has taken a pounding. No question.

The quick hand reflexes and getting the body in position to make the catch is always the first to go
