Concerned About JE11

He was a high priority yesterday for the Bengals' defense. Plus his foot is still not 100%. I wouldn't mind if he sat a couple of games and let it really heal to 100% frankly. He's such a machine he'll play with it at 80%, but it wasn't long ago he was walking around NYC in a boot.

That was a fun thread.

I'm thinking if he's playing on a re-broken foot, he's not playing 90%+ of snaps and returning punts, especially with all the depth there with Hogan and Amendola. My guess is it could be re-aggravated, maybe a tendon issue, or just a different injury altogether. Edelman's foot issues go way back, and I think he's had a lot of different ailments throughout the years. He looks to me right now much like he did in last year's playoffs, which was noticeably less quick but still able to be effective. This could just be his new normal, in which case he would still be a really good wide receiver. Let's remember the level he was at last year was reaching new heights for NFL quick target/YAC receivers, rivaling Welker's best, and many thought even better. Also, the man is 30 years old. I started to notice a split second difference with Welker around that age, and by the time he got to Denver, he was really slow and basically in his last productive season. Not saying Edelman is going down the tank or anything, but I'm not sure we can expect to see a return of the 2014-(first half)2015 version of Edelman. Obviously hope I'm wrong, but I'm just trying to objective and look at the peak and decline chart at the WR position; Edelman has played less snaps than most, but it has more to do with reflexes and speed than the ability to take hits.

Yea I don't think its broken either. Could be that some scar tissue is in there still and that is giving him a little discomfort.

He is absolutely at that age when the WR/Slot guy does slow down. It happened to WW around that same time. Same with Troy Brown...30 and 31 years old.

Hes due $5m next year too.

Chris Hogan is super fast, which would make a slight decline in Edelman's explosiveness less important...Hogan has been running the downfield routes, and with his size and strength, he is a better option anyway.

Yea.

Did we expect him to come back from the surgery and be 100% right out of the gate?

I am not concerned yet. I am more concerned about getting mitchell into this offense and him being a productive option for us. It would be nice to have a young wr finally work for us.

Not sure. He had 2 surgeries with one last Nov and another in April/May. That was approx 6 months ago. Dez Bryant had 2 I think. Several NBA players have had the injury including Kevin Durant had 3 surgeries in 6 months. For others it either ended their career or were out for 4-6 months.

He very well could be working his way through the back-end of the recovery window and won't be the old Jules until Nov/Dec.

It could be just timing with TB12.

It could be a separate injury. Who knows.

Agreed, it's really hard to say at this point. If it's something that can be helped by resting, I wouldn't mind seeing him take a few weeks off. One of the crazier developments up to this point is that, as good as he is at 100%, I think this offense can drop 30 on just about anyone even without him. I'm confident in Amendola's ability to stand in for him for a few weeks if that helps. If push came to shove, I wouldn't be against Mitchell taking an increased snap count either. Partly because the 2 TE sets are available, but also largely because of Hogan. As long as Hogan and at least one of the 2 TEs are out there, I think we're in pretty good shape.

Agreed. There's maybe not much difference between a catch or two per game and none, and I know Brady has the great problem of an "excess" of guys to throw to, but I'd love to see him keep Mitchell involved on an ongoing basis, just to keep him in the mix.

After watching that punt return yesterday not all that concerned..

Right now Brady is targeting #87 & 88, sooner or later a team will figure out how to defend them and #11 will assume a bigger role.. in the meantime he will continue to be targeted and it is just a matter of time.

I've broke both feet, Jones (5th) on the right and the 4th on the left. I wouldn't doubt if it's just his mental ability to trust it. There's a lot of weight transitioning on/off tiny bones in a very fast amount of time.

Or he could just be getting too old.

some new targets getting lots of touches means others could get less

I just think they're taking their time with him.......and Amendola for that fact.....less touches now = more in the tank in Dec/Jan

The Patriots are 5-1 and are probably a top 2 team in the league right now, and yet we now have threads about being concerned about Edelman, Gostkowski, the defense, and the depth.

The Bungles play more base defense which means you can move Gronk outside leaving him 1 on 1 with a safety/corner as a corner moves inside to cover Jules. The gameplan really led to Gronk being the dominant reciever and making throws to the outside. Just a gameplan thing.

Edelman is not putting up the type of production fans are accustomed to. It is reasonable to discuss.

Gost is missing more kicks than he normally does. It is reasonable to discuss.

The defense is near the bottom in 3rd down and red zone. It is reasonable to discuss.

There are some depth issues in various positions (DT, LB and RB). It is reasonable to discuss.

This is kind of what I would expect after the surgeries. He's not going to be 100% for a while. Could be something else too, who knows.

I would think if it were some type of set back he'd be shut down and not playing at all.

FWIW he looked good to me in warm ups and in the game Sunday. I thought they just didn't use him because they didn't need or want to. It's a long season after all.

Thats where my head is at on this. I think his foot is structurally fine as it pertains to not being broken. As I said earlier it might be some scar tissue is limiting him a bit on the real sharp cuts, apprehension, a different injury or just not on the same page with TB12.

if it was possible to make money by coming up with concerns based on the smallest things (or nothing) this board would be rich

Ohh, gotcha. I missed that. My apologies, Rob. Admittedly, I haven't been able to follow the team as much the past few weeks because of classes, so I have been missing a few reports.

My God Man! Where are your priorities?

No kidding. Doesn't everyone's life hang in the balance based on Wednesday's injury report?

I'm okay not having Edelman get too many catches, I want a fresh and healthy Edelman going into the playoffs. Right now we want the whole team to contribute and when Lewis is back we need to have him going slowly.

Based on snap count, I'd conclude BB doesn't share your concern.

decent line graph
