Concerned About JE11

The Patriots are 5-1 and are probably a top 2 team in the league right now, and yet we now have threads about being concerned about Edelman, Gostkowski, the defense, and the depth.
the 1 loss has potential to be a pain in the ass though. Hopefully not.

I see it too

Routine cuts to make guys miss aren't happening like they used to, and he seems much less able to bring in tough passes.

I think he's banged up and his playing time needs to be limited. I think we have the offensive talent that we don't need to work Jules until his foot falls off

Yeah, it is a little concerning.

I'm also wondering why Bennett was on the sideline for much of the 1st half (he got like, 5 targets eventually, but his absence was notable)

From reports, Patriots went with 3 wr , 1 TE, 1 RB for most of the game. Gronk and Bennett were only on the field together for 27 of the 61 snaps.

Here is an excellent article on the use of Gronk and Bennett in the game:

How the New England Patriots utilized Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett together in Week 6 win

He's dinged up & gets crushed on every play he makes. Yesterday he fell over Hogan after a catch and he seemed to be limping when he got up. It's concerning, but he's a tough SOB so I guess we've got to not worry about it and hope he can rest his foot in between games.

See, this sounds alright in theory--until you see him running out of the tunnel leading the team like he's trying to break an Olympic record, or lining up as the primary punt returner in garbage time.

Not sure. He had 2 surgeries with one last Nov and another in April/May. That was approx 6 months ago. Dez Bryant had 2 I think. Several NBA players have had the injury including Kevin Durant had 3 surgeries in 6 months. For others it either ended their career or were out for 4-6 months.

He very well could be working his way through the back-end of the recovery window and won't be the old Jules until Nov/Dec.

It could be just timing with TB12.

It could be a separate injury. Who knows.

I believe that Edelman has had 3 surgeries on his foot (2012, 2015, 2016).

Yep in 2012. I don't think it was the same bone.....?

The Bungirls were dropping 7 in coverage a lot yesterday. I think that had more to do with it than anything. O, and Gronk.

Dropping 7 AND still getting a lot of QB pressure.......not a good combination.

Not sure if it was necessarily the same bone, RW, but I'm almost certain it was the same foot. Worth noting (IMO).

He's a football player, and a tough one at that. If he can play he's going to. But maybe someone should make the call for him that he needs to heal up.

I'd rather get it done without Jules for a few weeks than have him worsen his injury and be forced to sit out

Thanks, bud. Was trying to find an article before I commented, but couldn't.

Unfortunately, it doesn't make me feel any better knowing that he's had surgeries on both feet though.

Exactly. You look at his injury history and hes been though a lot. Broken hands, arms, both feet, knee, concussions.

Just life of an average player in the NFL....

I fully agree with you. I'm just wondering if he's still knocking the rust off and allowing everything to heal, as opposed to some of the suggestions of re-injury, etc?

It would seem odd for Belichick to have him on the PR duty in garbage time when Amendola is a fine option, as well.

When I see an injury report and it says LP (Limited Participation) beside the players name, I really don't know what it means. Some players are listed as LP and don't play and others like Hightower are out there making great plays. Thuney is listed on the injury report with LP but I don't think he has missed a snap all season. There is no way to tell how injured Edelman's foot is. So let's look at the snap counts.

Edelman 58.91%, Gronk 57.89%, Hogan 56.88%, Bennett, 36.56%, Amendola 26.41%, Mitchell 11.17%,
Derby and Slater also got a handful of snaps on offense.

So Edelman was a full participant on offense, he led all snaps on offense, was used on PR. If he has an injury it's not super serious. I think Edelman was simply not the focus of the offense like it was in the past. Some of the catches that would have gone to Edelman are now going to Bennett.

Look at 2014. Top targets were Edelman, Gronk, LaFell, Vereen, Amendola and now look at 2016 Edelman, Bennett, White, Amendola, Hogan, Gronk.

We have 6 legit targets, Gronk would be near the top but has only been healthy enough the last 2 games. So against the Bengals, Brady had 29 completions spread over 7 targets. Along with the 6 legit receivers, Blount also had 2 catches, an unexpected bonus and something that caught the defense off guard.

Bennett has changed the dynamic of the team and the distribution of passes. Without Bennett, the distribution of passes for the season would have probably been Gronk, Edelman, White, Hogan, Amendola

Now imagine what it would look like if we also had Lewis in the line-up.

Edelman has seemed a little extra amped up this year, even for him. It's like he's willing to die for every extra inch, comes flying in to hit bodies whenever he can, and is ready to go to war with the D immediately after every play. I love the guy and I know that that attitude is what got him here, but he may need a xanax.

He is on the wrong side of 30 years old now. Wide receivers tend to lose there legs when they hit 30. For injured players, the decline is even faster. I know this will hurt many patriots fans, but I believe Edelman only has 1-2 productive years left in him before he really drops off badly. Right now, I would say he is physically slightly past his prime compared to 2013-14 and it's only gonna get worse.

If Malcolm Mitchell doesn't become a productive WR within 3 years, I will be very disappointed

I really am beginning to think there may be some sandbagging going on with Edelman. I think BB looked at last year and how the offense fell apart without Jules and said "never again". Hence all the new WRs. I think using all their weapons has become a point of focus this year, and that means not targeting Jules 15 times a game. This approach has the added benefit of reducing wear and tear on Edelman as well. My gut tells me they are lulling people a bit and Jules is going to go off one game when people think he can't.

I think he is definitely hampered by the foot. I mean the injury report says it and over the winter or spring there was another surgery on his foot. Hopefully he continues to get his cutting ability and route running back as the season moves along.
