Chargers' 2 point conversion call

Do we love it because it worked? Would we have hated it if it did not work?

Inherently, good call or awful?

Vrable did the same thing was that a good call? I think the Mahomes factor is not necessarily enough to justify it, but it was one of the coolest moments of the season. What are you thoughts?

I liked it for the following reasons:

1.) OT in Arrowhead is not ideal.

2.) The Chargers are probably doomed to be the #5 seed anyway and were already a practical lock for the play-offs.

3.) The play they called was the same play they called earlier in the game and worked beautifully....how can a guy be so open like that?

With the way the momentum had swung, I would have played for OT. Surprised they manage to get that conversation so easily. It depends on the situation really, this one wasn't a bad call even though I wouldn't have done it, but the Panthers was a really bad decision and I felt the Titans should have felt good about OT and not great about one make or break play with Mariota.

I would've gone to overtime if I were the coach. But good for them for being gutsy and having it pay off.

Who knows what to believe regarding what's been said about their rationale. What I do believe is they had a play they were sure would work and that absolutely dictated how they approached that decision. Rivers intimated in his onfield post game interview it was a slight variation on a play they had run successfully earlier in the game.

It was a ballsy call. But I suspect they chose to go for it because they knew they had a play Kansas City was unprepared for.

In most cases going to overtime is a 50-50 W/L proposition while a 2 pt conversion is also about a 50-50 succeed/fail proposition, so it's certainly s decision that can go either way.

If you think you have a better than 50% chance of converting, you go for it. If your offense is way better than your defense, you might also want to go for it.

I think the announcers last night said that the LAC were 5-7 on the year on 2-pt conversions, so they probably were thinking it was better than a 50-50 shot, especially with how they were playing.

I wouldn't always go that way, but based on the circumstances I think it is justifiable.

I thought they should tie the game and go to overtime. It was a gutsy call and they pulled it off easily. Wish we had a drop dead two point play like that. Chargers kept Mahomes off the field with long sustained drives.Amazing they overcame all the flags.

This is one of those situations where it is just a coach's philosophy. I respect those who play to win. I don't think there is any "right" or "wrong" decision about it.

If a coach thinks he can win the game with one two-yard play more than winning in the new 10 minute OT, I don't fault the decision one bit.

Reminds me of BB going for it 4th & 2 vs Manning. Faulk didn't make it but BB felt that his D would likely succumb to Manning/Mahomes had he punted and he felt confident that the Brady Bunch was up to a 1st down.

Looking it up I found

Long term average 2pt conversion rate: 48.2%
XP percentage after moving back to 15: 94-95%

So,
Go for 2= 48.2% chance of winning
Go for 1+OT = 94-95% * 50% = 47-47.5% chance of winning

So for a generic team it is slightly better odds to go for 2. But basically a wash.

I would think the real advantage of going for 2 is you avoid the risk of injury and potentially being more tired for your next game.

Agreed. BB made a good call with the odds in his favor, but sometimes the odds don't pay off in your favor. In 100 alternate realities, that play works more than it fails. Unfortunately in the lone reality that counts, it failed.
