Chandler Jones

Given the players I put forth, I'm not sure what there is to disagree about. Regardless of round drafted, NTs often take time and aren't ready to start week one of their rookie season.

Nobody said that Poe has to start in week one or he's a bust. People have said--and I agree with them--that it's alarming for a first round pick to be behind last year's practice squadder on the depth chart at any position. The traits that made him a first round pick is supposed to give him a major advantage, to the point that he should only be losing that battle if he's woefully out of shape and/or unprepared.

It's the same line of reasoning that I used when setting my expectations pretty high for Chandler Jones this season, at a time when a lot of people weren't. With the notable exception of Meriweather, the Pats draft guys who can step in and contribute in a big way right away, and they do it by beating out guys a whole lot better than the practice squad fodder that's currently taking snaps ahead of Poe.

In short: Take a guy with first-round raw talent, but who's going to need time to be brought along, coached up, work on his body, etc. These guys are consistently available in the middle rounds, so if you picked one of them in the first, then that's probably not a good use of your resources.

Oh, God.

Can we just have a thread about Chandler Jones without hijacking it into a long debate on a different subject?

Thread is about Chandler Jones. If anyone wants to debate Mr. Poe and draft picks by other teams, please argue it in the Draft Forum or NFL Forum.

I heard Coples was having a tough time against Ducasse in practice.

This is the 3rd Jones thread on the first page of the forum:

Said this guy could be "the one" the minute I heard the pick.

I could be wrong and he could bust, but this freakin defense has been mired in mediocrity since the dynasty years and I'm putting my chips on this guy.

Not a chance in effin H will this guy bust. Did you see him telling his mother on draft day that, "He made it", "He's a #1 draft pick". The look on his face when he saw how proud his mother was, was enough to tell me that he's not only playing for himself, he's playing to make his mother proud and that alone my friend is a man who is going to be an absolute "Nightmare" off the edge.

Arms like firehoses was a great description. They called him the "The Condor" for a reason. Freakish length and slender enough to maintain his quickness, yet still thick enough to club and bull rush his way to the QB. Someone said it earlier, the man is ass and arms combined with length and motor. The perfect edge specimen. The age of "The Condor" is upon us, I can't wait to see him bearing down on Dirty Sanchez and Manning.

The real story here regarding Chandler and Hightower was after new jersey took Coples and the squeelers took DeCastro,BB saw the chess board way ahead and was ready to implement his brilliant strategy......Fortune Favors the Bold:rocker:

I to share patriots fans disappointment in Chandler Jones performance.
Its obvious this kid is a complete bust as Bushrod easily handled him. Sometimes while lighting his classic Portuguese pipe that makes him look so stoic, and reflective.
On many plays Bushrood could be seen physically yawning and checking email on his phone after the snap.
Chandlers long arms slowing his burst speed as his knuckles drag on the ground.
I agree with most here, better to cut him now and find someone with promise.

The condor? Thank Gawd they didn't make a mistake and draft Nick Diaz.

Nick Diaz was EL Condor...c'mon...tighten it up...I know it's only preseason but...

I liked how Hurley put this:

He showed a variety of moves off the edge, getting the better of Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod. Jones drew holding calls on Bushrod on consecutive plays late in the first quarter. Those came after Jones applied heavy pressure on Drew Brees on the second play of the game and just before Jones tracked down scrambling quarterback Chase Daniels on third down to force a punt.

If you only look at the box score, you see one solo tackle and two total tackles for Jones. If you watched the skills, strength and speed on display, though, you know the Patriots have themselves a dangerous edge player in Jones.

Chandler Jones Looks Like Complete Beast, Leftover Patriots Thoughts « CBS Boston

Here is Jones' new roster photo:

NFL.com's Mark Sessler identifies 6 "early impact" rookies. Not surprisingly after Thursday's performance, Chandler Jones makes the list:

Jones is a wild jumble of arms and legs and power. He had his way against the New Orleans line, leaving left tackle Jermon Bushrod to tell ESPN Boston: "He looks like a (Jason) Pierre-Paul type." We agree. This man has havoc written all over him.

Robert Griffin III leads list of early-impact NFL rookies - NFL.com

A nice description: a "wild jumble of arms and legs and power" who "has havoc written all over him". BTW, 2 of my binkies for the 2012 draft, Lavonte David and Doug Martin, also made the list.

OK. So I was able to view a replay of the Saints/Pats game that I DVR'ed. Specifically doing so in order to get a look at this Chandler Jones guy people has been raving about.

  1. He displayed great burst and power. More power than burst I would say, but still very good.
  2. He, like Coples, seems to prefer the 4 point stance over the three point stance as a lineman.
  3. A couple of times he tried to rush as a stand up rusher, (no hands in the dirt) and was less effective. He will have to work on that.
  4. He looked good shedding blocks to stop runners. Something I thought he was a little less skilled at than Coples which is why I liked Coples over Jones.
  5. He whooped Bushrod's ass! SO much so that they moved Jahri Evans at T to deal with Jones for a few plays.
  6. Had good chase down speed on Chase Daniels after he escaped the pocket. One area that he is better at than Coples. However coples was chasing a RB while Jones was chasing a QB. Still impressive chase down.

What REALLY stood out to me was his long arms and use of his hands. That's where Bushrod had his biggest disadvantage because those arms kept him at bay and Jones' hands were able to push him back.

The thing with Chandler Jones that I saw on his college scout tape (which doesn't tell half the the story, I know) was that he only had one type of rush which was the bull/power rush. This was the rush that was primarily used against Bushrod...and it worked. But I would temper enthusiasm because there will come a time that Jones wont be able to overpower someone.

Example: When they switched Jahri Evans on him (only 2 plays) he was neutralized because Jahri was able to match Jones' power. When Bushrod was switched back onto Jones, Bushrod wasn't good as he got called for two holding penalties.

As the game went on there was one play that I saw which kinda told me that Bushrod was adjusting to Jones' attack. Saints have the ball 3rd down and 3. 13:51 in the 2nd quarter. As Jones rushes the passer (Daniels), instead of putting two hands in in Jones' chest area to block, Bushrod uses his hands to displace Jones' arms from ever reaching making contact. Without that strong arm push, Jones was less effective...as any pass rusher would be. I am simply asking this: if O-Linemen take away Jones' effectiveness as a bull rusher, how long before he learns another route to the quarterback?

That's all I have...

The primary difference between Coples and Jones that will play out over the next few years is attitude and work ethic. It is already evident in their interviews and fitness level. And the two team cultures will widen the divide - Coples will be surrounded by veterans who talk "me" and coaches who talk about how good the team and players are. Jones will be surrounded by veterans who will make sure he is giving 110% and not getting a big head, and coaches who will always focus on what he needs to improve.
