Can someone tell me what the Patriots are doing? Now Cooks is gone?

Lucky for you, that they don't have to take the field in April.

Butler was gone, so you knew that was coming. Solder is a loss. Added Danny Shelton, which is a nice pick up. Adrian Clayborn is a excellent pick up. Added Jeremy Hill, who has good upside, maybe. Patterson takes the return load off Edelman, so less wear and tear on him. Like the other guys said, you traded last years 32nd pick for 1100 yards, and 7 TD, and the 23rd pick of this year's draft. Now they have the ammo they need to add a real impact player, if they deem one worthy, in round 1. Relax, they'll be fine.

Patterson isn't a punt returner by trade. So he's not taking anything from Edelman unless he learns to do it and we all know how hard PR can be (Cyrus Jones, Chris Harper say hi)

Oh hah, I see it mentioned so many times over the years that I took it seriously.

Kind of a running gag, recently. Riffing off NG Pats Fan's repeated "Suh?" non-sequitur.

While BB has noted that they'll "try" Patterson as PR ("We'll see how that goes."), I'd guess that he's still looking at other possibilities - including, but not limited to, McCarron.

Let's see...we just lost a major good WR. We lost critical players in our offensive line. We lost defensive players.

Seriously....wtf is this team doing? They're doing nothing all off season besides losing key players, and failing to obtain any above average players. They let Butler go and now they have another hole in the defense. They don't bother to go after Sherman. They don't bother to go after Jordy Nelson. They're not bothering to go after anyone.

Well I guess BB is content for another 2009 season. Remember that season?
Did you forget this:
Okay I’m done. I’m done.
I’m done. This was such a depressing loss. I just am done with football right now. I can’t take it right now. No football news. Avoiding everything till September. Don’t even want to see the pre season games.

I’m very emotional right now and saying too much crap that I don’t mean. Depressing depressing depressing loss. See you in September.

It's April ....

They're reloading for the 2018-2019 season and we're all going along for the ride.

I think It’s like a rebuild situation. We don’t have enough cap, players are burnt out etc.

So tear it all down, draft rookies and start again

So you think Belichick was like, lets scrap this baby down and start rebuilding... lets start by trading Jimmy G, a legit starting QB for the next 10-15 years... Lets go with our 40 year old QB, and then completely dismantle the team around him and go into rebuild mode?

They are in win now mode, but they aren't going to completely mortgage the future of the entire franchise and make rash decisions..

The only departure that stung real bad and I was saying before it happened would be inexcusable was Nate Solder... Many people had him taking $10-11 mill a year and I was repeatedly saying that people will be surprised at what he commands in FA

After seeing the final numbers tho... i still think it sucks that Solder is gone, having him for 1 more year to transition his replacement would have been nice, but the Giants made him the highest paid LT in the league on a long contract... the Pats just simply cant match something like that, when teams are literally SETTING THE MARKET on some of the Pats free agents at their position. It is not possible to have more than 5 or so guys on your roster that are commanding top of the market deals... you just simply can't do it, or should i say you can't sustain it for any length of time.. Solder was a top 10 LT, not #1..

That one will really sting and I'm very curious to see how BB manages it, but I have liked most of the rest of the moves because they all seem to make sense and address areas of need.. Having another 1st round pick certainly takes some of the sting out of it as well, because you can even read my post history, I'm very much on the record as stating that Cooks would be gone in 2019 because there is no way they would pay him $15+ million a year as an elite top 5 WR

Losing Cooks sucks, but he was gone after this year and now they have awesome draft capital that they can use to address some serious needs.. like the LT position, a linebacker, a DE, a future QB, a Wide Receiver... etc

They have TONS of draft picks in the first 3 rounds, they can sit still and add 5 young talents onto the roster or they could move to pretty much any spot in the draft to take a guy they really like.. they have another $8.5 million to spend on free agents now, plus that additional 1st rounder for a young talent they can lock in for 5 years.. there is a lot to be excited about..

They did just fine without Cooks in the Super Bowl against a top defensive team.. he was a really nice complimentary piece to have in this offense, but for Brady to last 5 more years they need to be able to get quick passes off to keep the chains moving and run the ball effectively... Cooks was not good on 3rd downs, and that is a big part of this offense is the ability to sustain drives and score points more so than get it all in 1 big play.. If Cooks had left as a FA next year, how devastating would that have been to spend a 1st and 4th rounder for a rental?

anyways im done patting myself on the back

By the way, Brady himself wasn’t even disappointed in the trade (if you believe the reports).

I don't care, I can't stand it!

Ok that makes sense. No, I don’t think B.B. is doing exactly that but the situation with cap and the free agent catastrophes that have happened are forcing a partial rebuild. What can you call it if not that?

Reload.

This guy would have set himself on fire with gasoline if he was around when BB cut Milloy a few days before the opener.

No perspective these days...it's all knee jerk, sky falling "hot takes".

I think the staff loved Cooks. he played great. the key phrase here is "in this offense". in this offense, an outside WR like Cooks will never get paid what other teams will pay him.
next man up, Riley McCarron.
Britt/Dorsett clearly showed the staff a strong work ethic, an ability to pick up the offense. now they need to get on the same page with TB
pretty clear indication also that JE is feeling healthy and Mitchell will be available as well

If you can't see what a brilliant move this was by BB you should probably stop talking football personnel moves...period. BB turned a 31st first round pick into a 23rd using a player that will command a mega salary after THIS season. The Rams got hosed.

Other than Solder, they haven't lost any core parts of the team. They've replaced some departures with new guys

- They lose Lewis, they sign Burkhead and gain Jeremy Hill
- They lose Alan Branch, they gain Danny Shelton
- They lose (TBD) James Harrison, they gain Adrian Clayborn
- They lose Butler, they gain Jason McCourty
- They lose Cooks, they gain a 1st round pick (#23)
- They lose Fleming (3rd string), they sign Waddle (2nd string)
- They lose Amendola, they gain Cordarrelle Patterson (Amendola was clutch for us, but he was the 4th WR and got paid by another team to be more than that. Patterson brings the punt/kick return skills (#1 in league) and can hopefully make up some of his production at WR)

They were able to resign Marquis Flowers as well, which is great!
They resigned Matthew Slater

They have two 1st round picks
They have two 2nd round picks
5 picks in the top 95 in a draft that has a lot of depth at key positions

"Reloading" is the cliche term that I would use instead of rebuilding.. This roster is not even close to finished.. they have cap space and they have lots of draft capital to continue to morph this roster into a different beast that teams will need to deal with and figure out

and that doesn't even factor in players returning from injury

even more so. BB traded #31 for a 1000 yard WR at $1.5m per year. then traded him for #23.
