Can someone explain the penalty on Gronkowski catch?

If you look where the pick happens and where the LOS is then you can see why that is not really OPI. It is pretty much exactly in that 1 yard space that is legal.

Technically its outside of 1 yard- los is the 31 and contact is initiated on the 29

The contact doesn't happen on the 29. It happens right around the 30. The Steelers blocker has both his legs behind the 30 and the Browns defender is right on the other side of that marker. The contact literally happens exactly at the 30.

The issue with OPI on picks is that it is called often in an inconsistent way but in this particular case there was nothing blatantly wrong. If you seriously want to fight about a few inches +/- then lets maybe have a conversation about how footballs are spotted after each play because that has a substantially bigger impact on everything than something like this here.

It depends how closely to the letter of the law you want to follow, but it’s definitely outside of one yard. Los is the 31 and the bengal defender is lined up inside the 30. He is moving slightly backward to try to cover brown which would take him further from los and in the process he’s being blocked from getting to brown.

Whether iits a few inches or closer to a yard too far downfield which is where it looks like the contact is actually made with the upper body, Either way it is more worthy imo of opi than the allen play, and it is not the one that ended up being called. Im sure we’ve gotten away with some borderline ones as well but some of the opi’s weve been called for since 2015ish compared to stuff that didn’t get called is absurd.

I can explain that call. It was a ******** call handed down from ny.
