Butler's agent in search for 1st rounder + big contract

People act like the player has no leverage, he can just go to practice and dog it and pretty much force himself out.

He can pretty much be a waste of $3.9 million if that's the way him and his agent want to play it.

Gilmore is under pressure from game 1, if he turns out to be worse than Butler who gets run out of town.

They've given up $40m guaranteed for a question mark when they could of had a known performer for less.
If he did that, why would another team given him a huge payday?

His agent is out of his depth. Belichick knew it last year when his agent came to the table asking for top market money after 1 good season...
Not sure why you say this. He is hardly the first agent to advise his client to turn down short term guaranteed money for long term future gains.

Unrestricted free agency is where the money is at. Sure, it's a gamble but this is hardly an unprecedented situation we are seeing here or any sort of major gaffe on the part of Butler's representation.

I doubt any team is giving him a giant money deal and a 1st round pick to the Pats.

If I'm Belichick I tell Butler and his agent to sign the tender and play the year and we'll pick this up again next season....

Or don't and you can waste a year of your career and you'll still be in the same exact situation next offseason...

Because at the end of the day, I'm Bill Belichick and you're an undrafted rookie I gave a chance to, and there's no damn way I'm giving in to your demands and trading you for pennies on the dollar unless I get a 1st back...which most likely isn't going to happen, so sit tight take your $4 mill and shut up.

Yeah he's Bill Belichick who went 10 years without winning a Super Bowl because his secondary couldn't get stops in the final two minutes of countless playoff games.

Players matter and Butler has an ego too, he made a Super Bowl winning play.

Money talks in the NFL, you soon forget who gave you your chance when they underpay you and pay someone else.

Or, you know, he's Bill Belichick who went 10 years without winning a SB because a JAG WR pulled a ludicrous catch out of his ass and never caught another ball in the NFL and Welker couldn't hold onto the ball.

Because maybe that's the difference between getting a deal done and not getting a deal done?
Then don't get a deal done. The Patriots have no requirement to "get a deal done" with the Saints .

If Asante Samuel caught the interception the JAG WR would of never had a chance to make the play and after Welker dropped the ball the Pats had plenty of chances to stop them driving down the field.

2 years of game tape at top 10 cornerback level vs a months guy unhappy with contract

Says a lot about your character. Teams would not pony up a $65mill deal for a guy that quits on the field. No chance.

In 2 years when contracts rise and he feels likes he due a raise, he'll then pout and give up on you too.

Just not happening.

Anyhow, the thing that's most frustrating to me in all this is the echoes of the Welker situation -- agent misreads the market or otherwise doesn't know what he's doing and BB (rightfully!) decides he's not going to risk sitting on his hands and coming away with nothing and gets a replacement for the dithering player to cover the team's ass. And then by the time the agent and player realize where things really are the team has moved on.

Gilmore quit on the field against the Patriots, go watch Hogan torching him, he stopped chasing

Didn't stop Belichick from paying him, people look at a bigger picture than a couple of plays.

Is that supposed to be some slight against the winningest coach in NFL history? If so, weak.

Money does talk. That's why Butler has a tender of $4 million, a big step up from the $500,000 he was getting.

But ego and money and a big play three years ago means zero when your a RFA who's only really played two seasons in the NFL. You have no leverage. And you don't make demands and expect them to come true when you have no leverage.

That's not entirely true. As we did with Welker, the Saints could come to a deal with him first, and then negotiate a trade with the Pats.

That happened pre-2011 CBA, think it is different now.

No, they can't (not this year). The deadline to apply the franchise tag was 4 March. That ship has sailed.

You're right. I meant tag him next year when he's slated to become an UDFA.

Losing Butler would suck. No doubt about it. But its comforting to know NE will likely get something valuable out of his potential departure

So we're gonna turn down 1st round picks and let Jimmy G walk for a comp pick?

That tag is going on Jimmy.

What about the browns? Their secondary would improve alot

I am confused about the holdout predicted for butler.

Does not butler have to sign his tender by April or June or he could wind up with a 10% raise over last year's salary?

Then don't get a deal done. The Patriots have no requirement to "get a deal done" with the Saints .
That's certainly a possibility, but fact is we don't know what they are thinking. They may see keeping Butler as an impossibility and they may very well be happy with #32 today instead of nothing tomorrow. Or they may want to keep him for this year and just see how it all plays out.

I don't think it will come to that. Butler will be dealt to another team by then.

But theoretically, the Pats have leverage to tag him if they deem it neceasary

There is no way to really know what the coverage was.
