I do hope the Saints are better this year. The playoffs would be more interesting if Brees could be in the hunt for another super bowl trip. It makes the entire NFL better when your best QBs get to play late into the year.
I like it better when the best defenses play late into the year.
Arena football in the playoffs does nothing for me.

I think this will take a while before the trade happens. I'm guessing IF it happens, it'll be about a month from now right before the draft. Not certain of the dates, but I believe Butler has to sign his tender by Apr 21st, and New Orleans has until Apr 23rd to give Butler a contract offer. Might have my dates backwards, but I think this may take another month to get done.

The original trade was rumored to be Butler for Cooks and a swap of draft picks, but the Saints wanted to get the deal done sooner so NE gave up its #32 instead. The #32 pick is a placeholder, until more details could be worked out to trade Butler
Don't waste your breath. The FanBoy mentality is in denial mode at this time.

Well of course you don't want crap defense either. You want the Best Ds and Os in the playoffs. It is just without good QB play most offenses are fairly painful to watch so I gave special mention to Brees being in the playoffs. Particularly as he has not been in recently which is sad. You want some resistance and skill on both sides of the ball and not skill vs ineptitude either way.

That's a rumor.
and the deal stands. The patriots have no obligation to trade butler to NO. And NO had no clue what butler would want in a contact.
You can't say the patriots are stuck trading butler to only NO because someone speculated something.
What if butler wants to go elsewhere? What if a different team offers him, and the patriots more?

I can certainly say that I believe Belichick and Payton worked something out, and that as honorable people (which I believe them to be) they will complete what they worked out if they can.

You're absolutely correct -- neither side has control over Butler in this. If he can't reach an agreement-in-principle with NO then obviously he can't be traded there. And if he signs an offer sheet with another team then he's also obviously not going to NO.

And that's why the trade that did happen is one both teams can live with as it stands, even if it wasn't the trade they preferred. But if things work out with Butler such that they're in a position to complete what I believe was the original deal, they will. Belichick is not going to go back on his word on something like this.

That was a quick 180 in a week. Still wish someone could get through to him to either play on the tender or look at the Harris deal.

Also while neither side has to do anything I don't expect BB to go back on his word cause I doubt that is his nature. If he did it to try to screw Payton and keep Butler that would not be good long term. A lot of NFL deals are made before the contracts can be signed with the deal all worked out before hand. If you get the reputation for going back on your word or changing things last minute to suit you then people will not want to make any deals with you because by the time they realize they tried to screw you, you are now way behind everyone else. Why risk putting yourself in that situation?

BB is able to make a lot of deals with a lot of teams. He probably makes more trades and deals than any coach. I am sure a big part of the reason is when he makes a deal he delivers as promised. So you don't hit snags and things go smoothly for your team as well. If you lose that credibility his ability to trade as much as he does could go away quickly.

100% Agree. And Sean Payton has openly commented on Butler's visit and how much they like his style of play. That's extrmely rare for him to do... especially when a formal deal hasnt been hatched.

It leads me to believe that the Saints have reassurance from the Butler camp and Belichick, and are firmly invested in getting something done.

Wheels have already been set in motion for this....

Belichick wanted Cooks, so it had to be New Orleans.

Bill must love his gumbo, am I right?

*post-joke rim tap*
Hopkins's name was also flying around. I think there was something to that

But there is no reason to believe that there is any kind of agreement. It flies in the face of logic.
At best butler was part of the discussion or a secondary trade they talked about.
The implication that BB would accept an obligation to trade butler there despite other offers is silly and would be negligent on bbs part and he does not do things that are not best for his team.

My point is the type of team the saints build is not the kind I want in the playoffs. I would rather see good d weak o teams in the playoffs than good o weak d.
Bad defense is awful to watch.

This has been a done deal for a while. Payton is confident Butler will be a Saint because Belichick promised him he would give Butler to him at a big discount.

Two cheap years of Cooks for one cheap year of Butler (with a small draft choice downgrade) isn't a "big discount" if that's how it works out.

Patriots offered the most in draft pick compensation for Cooks. Butler is a 1st round RFA, if the Saints acquire him for anything other than their 11th overall than it's a massive discount.

The Osweiler deal is killing Houston. The could have been in play for Malcolm and Jimmy.
Didn't they just clear over $10MM in cap space with that deal?

And yet, no team has even made an official offer to a first round tender in 14 years, so any thoughts about getting their 11th pick should have been a pipe dream.

$16M.

But it also cost them a precious 2018 2nd round pick, removing capital to trade with. BTW, I think robertweathers meant the original Osweiller deal, signing him, not the deal to get rid of him.

No it isn't.
Putting a 1st round tender in the guy only means that's what you get in a deal you cannot control.
By your argument is atlanta signed him it's a massive discount but if Cleveland did no big deal.

Since no one is giving you a first AND giving him the money he wants, you protected your rights withbthe 1st round tender. If someone wants to offer less, you listen and make a decision. That's how this thing works.
