Everyone seems to have this in the "done deal" stack. I'm not so sure. He didn't come back with a contract proposal, so I'm not sure his demands were reached. I'm still wondering what kind of a deal the Pats are offering, since he's come back without even an incling of his intensions to leave.

In fact he's doing a promo appearance at some store today. I don't think you do that if you know you have a top of the market CB contract in your immediate future. Maybe NO didn't offer what he wanted. Maybe it will be close enough for the Pats to match.

THEN there is the football issues of whether Butler is the best CB for the defense they want to run, and in the division that they are in, and the for a top dollar price. So there they are, up against the cap as it is, and to sign butler they will have to backed load the deal which has significant ramifications for the future.

If I were a Saints fan, I might just be wondering if the 32nd pick might not be the better option, for a defense that isn't going to be cured simply by signing Malcolm Butler. It's not like he's the ONE player that makes him into a superbowl contender (no offense pherein)

$16M.

But it also cost them a precious 2018 2nd round pick, removing capital to trade with. BTW, I think robertweathers meant the original Osweiller deal, signing him, not the deal to get rid of him.
Yeah, clearly the original deal was a disaster, but this latest one was pure BB. He's always been one who, when he screws up, doesn't take it personal and gets rid of the mistake as fast as possible.

And yet, no team has even made an official offer to a first round tender in 14 years, so any thoughts about getting their 11th pick should have been a pipe dream.
Which is why most of us don't want to trade Butler at all.

No it isn't.
Putting a 1st round tender in the guy only means that's what you get in a deal you cannot control.
By your argument is atlanta signed him it's a massive discount but if Cleveland did no big deal.

Since no one is giving you a first AND giving him the money he wants, you protected your rights withbthe 1st round tender. If someone wants to offer less, you listen and make a decision. That's how this thing works.
And the decision should be to keep Butler this year, not do the Saints any favors.

This is a weird offseason.....

Butler isn't on another team. He is an unsigned RFA and free to sign with any team willing to give up a first round pick to sign him.

Didn't they just clear over $10MM in cap space with that deal?
Not sure. I checked earlier at they were at $22m I think.

The problem is that will not get them Malcolm and Jimmy G.

Maybe one?

If the saints start cutting players and restructuring, I could see they are making room for Butler.

Maybe another player could be traded along with #32 to help the saints with their cap. Which player would you take?

I think most here don't want to trade Butler due to the fact that he's a decent CB, not because they think they're somehow getting screwed by one first-round offer versus another. He's an undersized UDFA who was given a shot when Revis left (and often, a lot of help). He turned that into being considered for a 1st round trade in only two years. And people are *****ing? Lol.

No one in their right mind is going to discuss the Saints 11th pick. They aren't parting with their 11th pick AND giving Butler a brand new, longer term deal. C'mon, now.

Agreed, which is why no one in their right mind should even consider trading Butler to the Saints at all. The fact is Sean Payton is taking advantage of Belichick right now.

Why in the world we want to send good players to a conference rival, though? That doesn't make much sense to me.

That's a rumor.
and the deal stands. The patriots have no obligation to trade butler to NO. And NO had no clue what butler would want in a contact.
You can't say the patriots are stuck trading butler to only NO because someone speculated something.
What if butler wants to go elsewhere? What if a different team offers him, and the patriots more?
Just this morning I heard he signed with the Colts.

You are thinking backwards.
If anything, Cooks was the first round pick coming out of school. He was the one who had boatloads of raw talent and a huge upside. He's parlayed that into being one of only three NFL players to have had 75 catch, 1000 yd, 8 TD seasons in back to back years. The other two were Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham.

He took that first round status and ran with it, and he's only 23. If you want to take it one step further, Cooks is here for reasonable salary the next two years, while the Saints are forced to negotiate a long term deal with Butler....right now.

And you think that Sean Payton is fleecing Bill Belichick? That's rich, man. It's the exact opposite. And you already know that.

Cameron Jordan.

The Cooks trade should have nothing to do with this Butler trade.

They aren't doing the saints favors. To imply that is incredibly naive and ignorant.

I know, which is allowing the Saints to fleece the Pats.

I agree somewhat. On the surface, this deal seems like a solid, even trade: Malcolm Butler for Bradin Cooks (a younger, more talented player on a bargain rookie contract) and a swap of draft picks.

But the thing is... Butler is an established defensive stud with above-average to elite skills and championship bona-fides. Cooks on the other hand, while he has greater upside and potential, still has to learn our playbook and develop chemistry with Brady. There's no certainty that he will work out here in New England.

I certainly want New Orleans to return our first rounder, but if the Patriots are going to take on the greater risk, then the Saints should also have to part ways with their #42 (2nd round) or #76 (3rd round).

EDIT:
By the way... losing Butler weakens a key position in our defense.... again, NOLA must give more than a 1st rounder to compensate for this short-term loss.

@QuantumMechanic disagrees with my post... so apparently he must feel losing Butler makes our secondary stronger and Cooks is a surefire guarantee to takeoff here in New England
