Butler & Saints working towards finalizing a deal (Thread now UFC Pats Fans Event)

If Bill lets him leave for anything less than the 11th pick It'll be disappointing. Not because the Pats got fleeced but because it's an indication the team feels Butler must go for whatever reason.

Butler the newest former Patriot to be slandered on the way out for no reason.

Pretty much. This forum is outright embarrassing when it comes to former players in contract negotiations. The Patriots gave Butler his shot, but he definitely earned it and played his way into a role in Super Bowl 49 before becoming one of the better corners in the league. In this instance, it was a key role that helped the Patriots win the game they were almost certainly in a position to lose in spite of Brady's brilliance. He assumed the CB1 role and helped the team move on from Revis and his contract demands the following season and played a key role in this season's Super Bowl run. When they couldn't allow a first down, his coverage was air tight on a crossing route on third down forcing Ryan to put the ball out of bounds. The rest is history.

I'm wondering if the Pats can get another pick besides #32, even if a late one; 6th or 7th, for more shots at the lottery.

I think there is also the possibility of picking up something if someone wants to trade up for a sliding QB, although an earlier 1st round pick than #32 may be better for that.

I saw a mock draft on NFL*N where Trubisky went to the Saints at #42, and the only other 1st round QB was Watson to the Chargers.

If the pats are getting less than a 1st round pick then a deal must have been worked out with the cooks trade. But that doesn't make much sense because neither side could have known if Butler would agree to a deal with the saints or sign his tender. Unless BB was planning on trading him even if he agreed to the tender and was willing to play the year for <4M which makes even less sense cause that is too much value to give up.
Nothing. Makes. Sense. Except the fact that ray lewis killed a guy. That I understand

This. If the Saints are close to signing Butler then a trade has been already been worked out between the teams. We just don't know the terms but will know soon. If no deal is reached then Butler will play here for 2017. I'm definitely fine with that.
I wouldn't be so sure. My opinion is they may have discussed some trade value as it relates to the Cooks deal. But I think it became to tricky to line everything up and they went with completely different compensation. That trade is done and in the books. SP may have now moved onto Butler thinking he knows what BB might want but there is no obligation for BB to make this easy on SP. Maybe it will be but I think everyone has been way to quick to assume some sort of 2 part deal.

Would prefer to keep Butler...UNLESS, the Saints were crazy enough to give up the 11th.

This whole media mess surrounding Butler is silly. The eagerness of his agent to get paid is the real issue here.

At this point we don't know if it's his agent desire or Butler's, I will go with the latter.

And I was thinking these days and came to a conclusion: In Bill I trust, whatever is the scenario.

If we'd get the 11th, do it. Anything lower, it's worth more, I think, to keep Butler another year, because this team is THAT close to back-to-back championships. After the year, we'll see where we are. It's quite possible making a deal with Butler might be EASIER than it would be now, given all the sturm und drang this year. (And thank you, PatsFans, for an opportunity to use "sturm und drang" in a post.)

Belichick wants Butler gone, so they're going to take less to get rid of him.

I wish you guys would get your facts straight. It was two guys which makes it twice as bad. Especially since he is still walking free and "more likely than not" knows something about it.

I'm definitely siding with the Pats org on this one. No matter how many times I've disagreed, they've more times than not been correct.

As for Butler vs his agent, I've been thinking about how often situations like this have surfaced where a restricted guy causes conflict over getting paid early. My memory doesn't serve me too well that often, so I'd like to know how often this kind of stuff is happening. My perspective is that the agent is trying to make a splash, make a name for himself, get paid, etc. Butler has always seemed humble.

If he signs an offer sheet, the Patriots would get the Saints' 1st rounder, right? So it would end up as essentially Cooks, #11, and a 4th for Butler, #32, and a 3rd?

I mean, that's absurd.
The chances of them actually getting the #11 pick are remote. Don't take RFA rules too literally. Usually what happens is teams work out a different agreement.

The most likely outcome is that the Saints and Patriots already agreed to the parameters of the deal at the time of the Cooks trade. They will probably give us the #32 pick back.

Saints wanted to trade Cooks before giving the 700K bonus. You think they'd be willing to take up Amendola's contract? Especially when they'd still have to pay Butler.

Very little of Amendola's contract is guaranteed, so there's no need to get anyone to take it. DA will restructure or take a pay cut, or they'll likely cut him.

The Saints don't have much cap room. Maybe a trade will involve someone coming back to the Patriots.

I keep hearing this theory. When has something like this EVER happened? BB and SP being friends simply means they try to deal fairly with each other.

The only time I've ever heard of an RFA going on different terms than the associated pick was when the Pats threw in a 7th so Miami wouldn't match for Welker.

BB's responsibility is to the Patriots, period. I could still see Butler going for less than the 11th pick, but what that would tell me isn't that BB did SP a solid, but rather that Butler, or his agent, were becoming such trouble (Jamie Collins? Chandler and the weed?) and BB realized he couldn't possibly keep the guy beyond the one year (and maybe thought Butler would start freelancing that year) and so he tried to grab whatever value he could get now.

Also, if they do trade Butler, it might be a hint that Jimmy is getting franchised next year.

I believe that the 7th round throw in pick had nothing to do with the Dolphins matching the Patriots offer sheet for Welker. But had to do with the possibility of the Patriots throwing a "poison pill" into the contract. The Patriots could have signed Welker to the same offer sheet with a poison pill and given the RFA tender of a 2nd round pick. To avoid that bad blood, the two teams agreed to the trade with the 7th rounder thrown in.
