we disagree. Fisher held goff back and that is not about goff it's about fisher
His sterling career pretty much proves hus decision making blows especially at the QB position
OK, and as usual, time will tell. At any rate both of us are spending far too much time on the relative nature of Jared Goff than its worth. Happy New year

A great summation of why the SF job is one to be avoided:

The 49ers have fired G.M. Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly, a year after firing coach Jim Tomsula, and two years after “mutually parting ways” with coach Jim Harbaugh. But with all those dismissals and the team getting progressively worse, is there someone higher up in the organization who should be fired?

Not according to owner Jed York, who said at his press conference today that he remains in charge.

Asked why he shouldn’t be dismissed alongside Baalke and Kelly, York answered, “I own this football team. You don’t dismiss owners. I’m sorry that that’s the fact and that’s the case, but that’s the fact.”

At 11 wins a year, Bill only needs 8-9 years to pass Shula. Health permitting I fully expect him to go for it. Waiting out Bill could be a LONG wait.

I thought Bill already said he didn't want to coach into his 70's (he's 64 now). He's what 91 games or so behind Shula? If he goes 15-1 for his next 6 seasons he's still one game behind. Tom Brady would have to play at at high level until age 45-46 or they would have to find the new Tom Brady for this to be even remotely plausible.

The point is, if Bill is serious about not coaching into his 70's, catching Shula is pretty much a pipe dream.

He's certainly pass Tom Landry in wins within the next 2 seasons for 3rd best all time and, God willing, pass Chuck Noll for most superbowl wins as an NFL head coach this year. Once he passes Noll in rings and Landry in all time wins, he's pretty much secure in the "greatest ever" debate and may want to consider retirement.

He made a comment off the cuff saying I don't think you'll see me coaching in my 70s. That was a long time ago. It wasn't a promise.

Maybe, maybe not . . . but if he gets ring #5 and passes Landry, he's the undispute GOAT. I don't think he needs to overtake Shula or Halas (which would take years) to cement his legacy any further and may not want to deal with anymore of Goodell's bullcrap after he hits 70.

I don't think he "deals with goddells bull crap" or coaches for a ranking. He coaches because he is driven by it.

josh should pass on all 3. not the best of situations to jump into. josh is still young and can be picky with a future HC job.

I'm sure that's the #1 thing a person making north of $5 million a year has on their mind.

Millionaires have been leaving California for Florida for years. No income taxes. You can homestead your house. You can buy three times as much in FL than you can anywhere in California especially the San Fran area.

C'mon. Cost of living vs MA. It's higher than MA but at making several 7 figures it is a non-factor.

You would be shocked how much of a factor it is for some millionaires.

But there is a Jerry York tax in San Fran where your career is taxed by a moron sperm lottery winning owner.

Things change, it was a random, generic remark. If he turns 70 and finds himself a couple of seasons from catching Shula - assuming health and a solid team - he's doing it if he still enjoys it. Bill may not show it but all these guys have HUGE egos. 91 games. Say Brady plays 4 more and gets 13 wins a year (remember it includes playoffs and this year isn't over yet). That's 52. He only needs 40 more to pass Shula. Even if he's a .500 coach, which he won't be, he gets that in 5 seasons.

#1 all time winning HC ? If he's healthy and enjoying it ? Damn right he goes for it.

Yeah but then you have to live in Florida, which is 95% of the worst people from New Jersey with real tans instead of fake tans.

Signed,

A Californian

Goff is kind of mystery to me. Here is a guy that PROFESSIONAL personnel people universally told us he was worth a top pick in the draft. One team thought he was worth THE top pick plus draft picks. So people "in the know", people who do this for a living thought Goff was really good.

Yet somehow between April and July, Goff became the kind of player that an NFL coaching staff felt was unworthy to wear a uniform on Sunday, even when the guys who were actually playing pretty much sucked and were hurt. Goff only got on the field when there was no choice. And once on the field proved that Fisher's decision to keep him off it, was one of the best he made while HC of the Rams.

And remember that Fisher's offense wasn't exactly what they do here. It's never been that complex, even while in Tenn. SO you have to wonder WHAT is wrong with this kid that, in a bad program, he's fallen so far. Most guys who get picked where he got are starters who have rough first years but show plenty of flashes too. (Mariota, Winston, Mannings, etc) This kid was buried on the bench like a UDFA and told not to show himself unless there was no one else to play.

I'd have to think it is more that he's badly coached, or has some easily solvable issues. There has to be some major disconnect going on here. A learning disability perhaps? I don't know, but I DO know that the #1 pick in the draft shouldn't be THIS bad. Even the epic bust QB the Raiders picked #1 (whose name escapes me) wasn't close to this bad. Ryan Leaf wasn't this bad

I think that's just one of those things that Fisher believes. Early in Fisher's career, they drafted Steve McNair 3rd overall, and he sat him for most of his first 2 seasons before handing over the reins for a largely successful career. I believe this made a huge impression on Fisher, who withstood the early pressure to play McNair like fellow 1st-round rookie starter Kerry Collins.

When they drafted Vince Young 3rd overall (largely because Bud Adams was obsessed with Young), Fisher didn't want to start him, sitting him behind now-veteran Kerry Collins. But once the team started 0-3, Young got the starting job. The two never really got along, and it was speculated that Adams made Fisher start him. But when Young hurt his knee and was out a few weeks in 2008, Fisher gave the starting job back to Collins, and let him keep it the rest of the year despite Young being healthy. And at the start of 2009, Fisher told everyone Young would have to earn the job back from Collins, and didn't start Young again until the team was 0-6 and Adams was pissed.

So I think even if Goff were Peyton Manning as a rookie, Fisher would bench him for a year or more.

Indeed. Florida's biggest problem is that people migrating there from other states.

Jed York: I own the 49ers, and you don’t dismiss owners
To take it a step further, the fact is that Jed York is NOT the owner of the 49ers. IIRC it's either his aunt or mom. When confronted by a reporter that he wasn't the owner, he basically ignored the question.

Certainly not a great destination, however that being said, given what we are hearing is going on in Buffalo, THAT situation has to be worse if only because you'd have to play the Pats twice a year and live in Buffalo

Unfortunately vacant HC's jobs by definition don't usually come with great situations, otherwise they wouldn't be vacant.

If you don't need control of the football operation, Denver would seem like it isn't far away, but Elways runs that program. The Rams are in the right place, but have been totally screwed up and the old GM is still there. We mentioned the Bills and Niners, which just leave the Jags and SD.

  • Denver would be a good job, at least in the short term, for an offensive coach, because Elway's just the guy to bring in a Romo or Cousins, and Wade Wilson can run the defensive show, but McDaniels is clearly not going there.
  • Indy might actually be a good job if you could bring your chosen GM with you. Irsay's a lunatic, but he's shown patience, and hasn't seemed to be particularly meddlesome about the actual running of the team.
  • The "goodness" of the LA job depends a lot on how one feels about the QB, and how willing the owner promises to be with the checkbook.
  • Jacksonville would be great if you liked Bortles, or could bring in your own QB, but it's in Jacksonville
  • I wouldn't touch Buffalo, SF, SD, or NO (if it opens up)

I believe Belichick made the comment about not coaching into his 70'a a few years ago when he was still married.

He has since divorced his wife & his son has joined his coaching staff.
Football is his life & without the ball and chain nagging in his ear, I believe Bill will keep coaching as long as his teams remain successful.

If he gets close to Shula, I am sure he will stick around just to take the record piss on Shula's grave.

Jamarcus Russel fleeced the Raiders big time and is one of the catalysts for getting a rookie payscale in place because he got like 40+ million guaranteed from them and he SUCKED

I can't even get $40+ thousand and I'm good at my job. These athletes have no sympathy from me.

I think he coaches because he enjoys it. Bill could coach until he is 74 that wouldn't be completely unheard of. Of course as he enters the retirement age, and losing Brady.. Bills job is going to get much tougher and maybe he starts to lose endurance.. hell he might start losing his memory.

I think if Brady had 12 years left Bill would definitely stay into his 70's. But chances are Bill is going to have a middle of the pack QB after brady retires. Brady has 3 and a max of 5 years remaining and thats only if he doesn't suffer a career ending injury.
