I mean, it's a real estate transaction. Oh, news flash... the dude is 42. He's not playing forever, no matter what kind of snake oil crap he's peddling at TB12.To much is going to be made about this. I'm in the "who cares" faction. Tom Brady is clearly in the year to year part of his career. All I care about is what the Pats are going to be for the 2019 season. Why should I agonize about something that far into the future?
BTW- Why would Brady sign both to sign ANY deal if it was his intention to leave after this season. I have no idea why he chose THIS time to put his home on the market, but it is what it is.
BTW-2 There is no reasonable scenario that any move to the NYC area would entail a move to to the Jets or Giants. Both teams currently have their QB's of the future firmly in place, and if Brady either already owns or plans to buy a smaller place to stay while he's still in Boston we won't know about it.
BTW-3 This was simply a deal that gave Brady a modest (relatively) raise, gave the Pat a modest cap bump, and recognized the reality of the FACT that Brady, at 42 years old, is in the "year to year" stage of his career. There is really no drama here at all.
But regardless this will now be the ultimate narrative for at LEAST the rest of TC.
It has to be somewhat relevant if it was specifically forbidden by this deal. The Franchise tag is irrelevant in Brady's case. Both sides know that the Pats would never utilize the franchise tag.
$35+MM would NEVER fit within the Pats current cap situation. Either it wouldn't fit, or take up so much room they'd be hamstrung to do much else to improve the team. In any event Brady was going to be a FA after this season.
Relax everyone. He's probably just getting a divorce after a soul-crushing extra-marital affair, both physical and emotional.
Whew. Thanks man, I feel better.Relax everyone. He's probably just getting a divorce after a soul-crushing extra-marital affair, both physical and emotional.
"...And now to the 10th hole, with Peter Kostis and Tom Brady."Brady also recently signed with the William Morris Endeavor talent agency in NYC, an agency that represents many athletes who moved into broadcasting
. In any event Brady was going to be a FA after this season.
I believe the Franchise tag part is a side effect of spreading dollars out over 3 years. It's not that there is no franchise tag it's that he's not a free agent he has a 3 year deal. I don't think you can void the years after the season but before franchise tag window. So to write the contract this way so that both TB gets a raise and the team can save cap $ they had to eliminate this useless option. The media just latches onto this because franchise tag is a buzz word.If Brady was happy going year to year then why make sure the franchise tag was eliminated as a possibility next year? If he was fine going year to year after this season why knock all that money off the table?
That would have been merely and implied threat at BEST if it had been left in contract. Can you create any scenario where the Pats would take on a cap charge of over $35MM for a 43 year old QB. It would be a cap killer of immense proportions. In or out, it was never going to happen.Brady IS going to be a free agent after this season, and he will be one that cannot be threatened by a franchise or transition tag.
