It better be straight up and no picks involved.
At this point BB is so invested Im afraid Payton may try to fleece us.
How is bb invested?
He can keep butler for 3.9 mill.
He can trade butler to 30 other teams.

I don't like this at all, my cousin is a bills fan and when we talk cb he always tells me gillmore doesn't have half the compete level of butler.

I'm really unhappy if we pay Gilmore and lose butler.
Maybe your cousin should call bb and educate him

I think we need to wait on what happens to Butler. There are too many possibilities right now.

This sums up things perfectly for today. Best to wait for official announcements before some of you literally jump off a cliff...

Why wouldn't Butler hold out over this if he stays?

He doesn't get service time if he holds out for the whole year, and BB can jury rig for half a season if needed. So, Butler either plays, giving the Patriots a tremendous defensive backfield come playoff time, or he goes into next season in the exact same UFA position.

Maybe

As another poster said, if I'm butlers agent I'm in holdout mode. As a fan it's easy to say the pats do things right, but as a player this would be beyond frustrating.

Butler deserves to get paid, and as much as I hate holdouts, I really couldn't blame the guy here

he has a contract.......he can hold out but Gilmore reduces that impact....the Pats hold all the cards now

Dunno about this. 14 a year. He's a good corner but you have to take care of your own players sometimes and maybe less expensive too.

Am waiting to see the whole picture unfold before making any judgement. Either way it tells me Butler is gone this year (inside info on RFA deal or trade) or next year when you either have to franchise or pay him.

You don't keep two 14m CBs on your roster.

With the money that's in the cap now, $14m isn't a huge bite for your CBs.

So you think there's a team out there willing to give MB a max contract PLUS give NE their 1st round pick? I love MB, but that's a stretch.
I said if. read the post again. I do think it's possible.

Until we see the contract details all this angst is unnecessary.

Change of philosophy for sure.
But Belichick must love Cooks he might go all Rex Ryan and tat his face on his arm jk

Yes implication is if BB is trading him there is something wrong with him.

Wrong with Butler. Ok. Sometimes these guys type so fast you can't decipher what they mean.

The only thing I don't like about Gilmore's signing is the price. $14 million is a lot for a CB that has inconsistent effort and tackling. No doubt he's a better CB than Ryan but he has not played like a true CB1 for the Bills and we just made him one of the highest paid CBs in the league, for 5 years as well.

But then again this is Bill. The only bad FA signing that didn't pan out well was Adalius Thomas. I do hope Gilmore plays much better with us.
The only problem with the Thomas signing was the length. (And the unrealistic expectations that his value would show up in stats)
Thomas was fine his first few years here.

Just a note, people, and I'm not saying that Butler's staying/going/retiring/ascending to godhood:

  • The Patriots offense is going to be returning, essentially, intact.
  • The Patriots have many millions to spend.
  • The Patriots have very little money invested in the defense.
  • The Patriots can easily afford to pay Hightower, Butler, and Gilmore, and could still add another big ticket defender.
  • With the opposition this year actually having QBs who can play, having 2 legit corners makes perfect sense.

IMO if the Pats move Butler and need to trade their first for a 2nd to do it I will be ticked. Butler should not require you to do anything else. He is plenty good as is and his value should be enough for a straight up trade.

For the people who understand tenders and picks well, please help me understand this
Pats tendered a first round pick on Butler meaning if some other team signs him they give us their first round pick, is that correct?

If Saints do trade Cooks to Pats, how will we end up getting both Cooks and a first rounder ?
