Bill O'Brien Gone: new OC at Ohio State

A lot of folks love the idea of Welker as OC but what makes him qualified? Do we have any reason to believe he can actually be more than a receivers coach? There’s a big gap there between the roles

We already have an all time great ex-Patriots receiver as the current WR coach, should he be the OC?

Yep, I don’t get that either.

We don’t know the exact circumstances and we don’t know if the people still in the building know the circumstances, but it’s awfully suspicious to me that Shane Waldron went from the Patriots in 2009 to the Hartford Colonials (UFL) in 2010 to high school OC in 2011. It sure seems like the Patriots either fired or “non-renewed” him, because that doesn’t look like a career path that people choose voluntarily.

Curious whose paying BOB's '24 salary

What do you think BOB will be whispering in MHJ's ear the next few months while the NFL-bound WR works out on campus?

I'm absolutely not surprised that Obie is gone. This has to have been the worst experience of his career. Not that it was any good for us either.

Interestingly, QB Will Howard took the transfer portal route to Ohio State from Kansas State. I liked him as a later round pick in this year's draft but he opted for a chance to showcase himself for a higher draft slot next year. I'll be watching what BOB does with him.

McD is coming back(for free, of course), AND Mac is going to get another full crack at it. Jon Kraft our new GM has deemed it so. Welcome to your new team, the dallas, er I mean the new New England Patriots.

If McD comes back, then you're probably right about that.

Mayo deserves to pick his own staff. I doubt McD is his first choice.

I don't want any new patriots coach that still has the arrogance. josh, matty p, judge, BoB, are all technically competent but seem to be terrible people persons. Need to clean that aspect up.

Huh?
I’m fine with him as a position coach but no way would I make him the OC.
It's something new and he's worked under Shanny.
whoever gets hired I hope they give him the time necessary to do their thing

I would like them to talk to Zac Robinson. He is the quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator under McVay in LA and was drafted here in the 7th round about 10ish years ago. The McVay tree seems to be producing good coaches and with we are likely to have a young QB. If they do have any real interest in swapping with the Bears to get Caleb Williams I think Kingsbury would be worth a look too.

Bob did not fit Mayo's ideals for a coaching staff, he's very in your face authoritative, old school. I think Mayo clearly stated he was looking for a different culture in the coaching staff and how they interact with this generation of players. I actually had the thought Bob was gone during the press conference; he just does not fit with what Mayo wants to do.

I love that Mayo has a plan, he knows what he wants to do and what type of coaches and players he thinks will be successful. Whether he hires the right people or actually has the right plan will be played out over time but he's saying, and doing, all the right things so far. Hard not to like Mayo, I think you can see why he has such a good reputation amongst people that have gotten to know him. Hopefully that all translates to success.
Sure, we are drafting the qb of the future at #3, and he is likely a dual threat type. Why would you want the guy who developed Deshaun Watson in Houston and turned Bryce young into a heisman winner and #1 pick when you can get a guy who talks to 22 year olds the way they like to be talked to.
What could go wrong?

O'Brien was a Belichick hire. It could either Mayo wants to have his own guys or O'Brien left because either he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild or for some sense of loyalty to Belichick.

I like O'Brien, but let's hope his leaving means they are going to bring someone in who will modernize the offense.

That's what I'm saying Rob ....OB ran a primitive Offense compared to modern standards. Get us someone from the Shanahan/McVay tree.

You are overrating the OB a bit don't you think??

Looking forward to the second OC tour of Matt Patricia!! After all, more points scored during his first OC season, can you just imagine the improvement with his second year!!

One of my binkies is Brian Griese. He is the 49ers QBs coach and has done a great job developing Purdy. If the Pats draft Maye or Daniels or even Nix or someone else in the second round, that QB needs someone who will help develop him like McDaniels did with Jones his rookie year.
