They most likely could have gotten a very late pick, but chances are that Vrabel respected him as a former captain and instead let him go for free so he can go sign wherever he wants before he hits 30 instead of being stuck wherever he got traded to. If someone was willing to send like a 3rd or 4th, or if trading him made a big difference from a money standpoint then yeah they'd have traded him - but if it's a super late pick they just do him a favor instead.I have a tough time believing that they couldn’t even get a 6th rounder for him.
