Atlanta's Defense

pats run blocking needs to improve a lot next game. they got nothing running it inside, the cetner and guards were pushed easily and quite a few rushes were negative. need to run effectively to keep their d honest

By my eye, they weren't getting pushed around so much as out-thought. The Pats interior line just plain missed the Pittsburgh LB's, who were running stunts that free'd them up to drop Blount at or behind the LOS. That's what needs to get fixed.

I'd love to see the Pats start with 6 OL, a FB, and Blount, and spread Edelman and Hogan out wide. Then run, run, run and don't pause so Atlanta can't substitute fresh players without using a TO.

Atlanta has a very good team, very good offense, and average defense in my opinion. NE has a a very good offense and and a good defense. I don't care what anyone says you don't win the Super Bowl playing average defense. Look at some of the greatest offenses in NFL history that didn't have at least a decent defense...how many of them won the Super Bowl? Not many. This is not the greatest show on turf, that team had won the last 3 MVPS, a Super Bowl and had obliterated some NFL records over the last 3 years before we played them in the Super Bowl. This Falcons offense is a very explosive offense that needs to be contained, but let's not start crowning them the 80's 49ers just yet. The Colts of the mid 2000s shredded some NFL records until they ran into New England in the playoffs. Peyton was already a 2X MVP by that point. I like our chances in this game. We can beat them in a shootout, but I don't know why no one's giving us the due credit. Pittsburgh and Houston both have solid defenses. Green Bay's was so banged up and was statistically one of the worst in the league. All that team had yesterday was Rodgers and Cobb. Nelson probably shouldn't have even played, their O-line was ravaged by injuries to the point where they had to use a Nose Tackle on the O-line. So before we start crowning this Falcons team the greatest offense anyone's ever seen, remember that TB12 and BB have been around the block a time or two, there's nothing they haven't seen. Plus our offense is pretty damn elite too, yet no respect. I like our chances quite a bit in this game. Go Pats!

Love this gameplan

I haven't watched a ton of Falcons but in the Seattle playoff game it was weird. Rawls had 6 carries on the first drive, they were power running very successfully. Then he had just 2 carries the rest of the half and finished with 11. After having 6 on the first drive.

His numbers for the game weren't good but on that drive he had 9, 7, 0, 3, 8, 2, a 4.8 YPC average then they stopped running for the most part.

Wow. Um . . . what ?

"Now, I don't care WHO played QB for the Almighty Pats"

They're hicks from Georgia. Can't expect much from out of something that looks like this:

Falcons foundation is essentially a cover 3 but Quinn has been forced to mix in man. Base nickel

Spacing has been and is an issue w/ them. Esp on deep/inter crossers.
In Cover 3 your backers are going to be tested. Doesn’t matter if its backer like Jones (who has looked like a younger Shaz at times this year) or Neal (my top rated S just edging out Joseph. Neal is a wonderful interchangeable player w/ great instincts esp underneath in the box and will lay you out)

Both backers and S's have been caught looking in the backfield and underneath routes.
Move them back and theres a ton of space underneath to work w/ Lewis/White/11
Even still when in trips the Pats will get a backer or S on the inside man, closest to the QB. That could be Hogan, Jules who ever they want. Any of those guys have a +++ advantage in that match up running that clear out, crosser etc

I'm picking on Alford in coverage first who has def held his own at times but also is very handsy. I want 11 on him as much as possible.
After him Im looking at Collins. Again I want him matched up w/ Hogan or Edelman. He can't stay w/ them and if Floyd plays will be at a huge disadvantage their physically.

Up front the biggest focus is on Beasley w/out a doubt. This kid is really putting it all together but still has a long way to go.

Right now you want to get hands on him and smother him as much as possible. After that it's a wrap for the most part.

Right now they line him up out wide, think wide-9 and let him work. Its basically his speed rush that you're worrying about w/ his bend. Which has got better throughout his short career.
When he's lined up inside hes almost trying to execute some sort of exotic twist/stunt.
He has a long way to go but has more than a few high quality sacks even tho he feasted on Denvers poor T.

Grady Jarrett is a fire hydrant that def deserves some attention. Not the biggest DT but a bull w/ quickness and knows how to get skinny. Great motor. Im sure the draft guys were all over him.

Hagerman has always had trouble playing with leverage and functional strength but played one of, if not his best game last game.

This defense is playing better as a result of playing together, communication and some great speed.

However they can be run on by us imo. This Pats offense is no joke and when locked in, deadly. This whole group is smart, tough and physical.

Their spacing and diagnosing of routes/plays shows how young they are in the secondary.

Like I said about Vic. Look at how wide he is in certain alignments. Speed and bend. After that theres not much rn. He's def a guy that feeds off momentum and produces in bunches.

The only way any team can really slow down Brady is with pressure. Atlanta does not possess a great pass rush. Other than Vic Beasely, they have no one. Adrian Clayborn, their next highest player with sacks, is out for the year. All BB has to do is account for Beasely on every play much like we did to Von Miller, and Brady will have all day to throw.

Patriots defense is very good at 3rd and long it's just that fans think any more than zero allowed is pathetic

The 3rd down defense has been spectacular. Yesterday it gave some up but it got stops on the biggest 3rd downs
You guys are getting way to caught up in the stat numbers. As a fan I have seen every game this year.....like twice. Atlanta has been getting so far out in front of teams this year in the 4th quarter in half their games, that The D starts to trade yards, and points for time off the clock. A perfect example of this is the last game of the season against NO. Atlanta was so far up in that game in the 4th quarter Ryan threw 3 passes only one was across the line of scrimmage. N.O. scored 21 points in the 4th because Atlanta was giving points and yardage for time. I can give you at least 4 more examples of this. 3/4 of the points Atlanta has given up has come in the first half of the year and in garbage time. 7 out of 11 players on D are rookies or 2nd year players. The average age of this D is 24, and that is with Babineaux at age 35! So the first half of the season was like you aint in college any more Frances! It has taken them awhile. As some of you posted the last half of the season has been so much better. Are we as good as NE? No! Are we a good D? No. I would say more right now as average. But I do know this we are much better than 90% of your fan base thinks we are. And I bet we are the fastest D in the NFL. As the say, you cant teach that!

Are those real?

Exactly.

When Bob Sanders started more than 14 games (2005 and 2007) the Dolts finished 2nd and 1st in points allowed.

He had a total disregard for his body.

Won a DPOY. he was a pain but he was one of the Colts players I liked. Sad to see a really talented player have a career ruined by injuries

Their defense stinks. As long as you dont fall behind against them your fine

I don't think Beasley will do much on the outside but i see Atlanta at times pull Stunts and bring him inside after the snap. Rare but it happens and that could get Andrews in trouble. It is something to watch for.

I believe Vic played about 65% of snaps this year. Him Grady are the consistent pass rush your dealing w/.

They'll send Alford or another DB off the edge on a blitz or up the middle w/ a backer.

Poole, Alford on Vic's side beware of a blitz and stunt behind Grady.

Rn space is his best friend.

Atlantas defense is not good. They are 27th in the league. Had their rb not fumbled or their kicker not mossed a field goal that packers game would've been much different.

So when i look at brady vs the 27th ranked defense or ryan and that offense vs our defense i have alot more faith in our defense being able to slow down atlanta than the opposite.

Brady just put up 30+ on houston who was #1 in yards and on the steelers who were hot coming in. Not to mention the tough defenses they faced during the year.

For all the atlanta fans being so confident because of their offense they dont seem to bring up how they are going to stop our offense

Jarrett was one of my all time favorites. I was definitely pounding the table for him. Great kid.

I know this argument. I've seen it a few times in the last 24 hours. But I also saw it in 2011, when people were trying to talk up our pretty ****ty defense in 2011. Yep, we got to the Super Bowl with it, but really, the all-world offense got us there.

You guys don't have a defense as bad as that one, not by any means. I'd call your D a below average unit with upside potential.

this guy is in for a rude awakening....

Ummm, wut? Hard to know where to start with this one.

Atlantas defense will fold in a big spot

So I went over to their forums...

1) They're reading this thread and it's got them all worked up, which is a little funny.

2) Most of them don't really seem to possess much in the way of football knowledge. The Falcon fan that came here and put forth a rationale for their defense (even if I mostly disagree with it) would be a Nobel Laureate over there.

3) Lots of "deflatorz blargh" nonsense, so that's the educational level we're looking at.

To the Falcons fans reading this: So people are using stats to discredit your defense. Boo hoo. We've got the #1 scoring defense in the league and everyone says we suck...oh well. Grow a pair.
