Article on Hollins working with Chism

Chism reminds me so much of Edelman. He made the right decision to sign with the Patriots, iirc he had 6 other offers. Vrabel is committed to developing young players who commit to doing the work, and he's the kind of guy who is willing to do everything it takes to become a good NFL player.

There's an interesting tidbit on Chism's TD.
That’s a very good read, thanks. Lots of good stuff in it.

This is the icing on the cake:
Hollins was there to celebrate with his mentee. The next day the pair watched the video and realized that Chism scored on the exact play call and ran the same route that Hollins did for his first Patriots touchdown in Miami in Week 2.

Talk about following in his footsteps eh?

Chism 'gets' how to get open. I will keep pounding the table that this is a skill that should not be ignored ESPECIALLY when it seems 'unexplainable' by standard physical metrics. It means this guy is not relying on speed or strength or height. He is relying on intense study and an understanding of how to work yourself free of tight coverage.

The best part for me:

“The biggest thing that I’ve tried to teach him about is not wasting time,” Hollins said. “One of the biggest misconceptions is coming in early makes you better than everybody else. By no means does that, but it gives you a chance to be better than everybody else.”

"Instead of getting frustrated, the rookie worked hard in whatever role was necessary."

That right there is why he was worth keeping as an udfa... its good to see.

I noticed pretty quickly that Chism was definitely playing Hollins’ role. He was running similar routes, he was blocking outside… I especially thought the blocking was a surprise since Hollins obviously has a big size advantage but I also thought Chism was blocking quite well.

I know we all had Chism noted as a pure slot guy but that might’ve been premature. Which is good, because you really need to be flexible to be truly successful in McDaniels’ offense. Josh would prefer to kill you with three B or C tier talent guys he can move all over the place rather than three higher talent guys that are tightly restricted to one spot and are more easily game-planned against.

This could have been Hollins best NFL season ever if injury didnt strike. Hollins is still in the game mentoring Chism.

I hope that Hollins recovers and is back next season.

Mack Hollins has exceeded all my expectation after a pre-season where he didn't look like much. Glad he's signed for another year. This off the field veteran leadership stuff is not something you can quantify with stats.

I went back and watched a lot of Douglas on tape and then Chism in the last game. I still think Chism will thrive mainly in the slot. HIs strength seems to be finding holes in the zone and sharp cuts that create separation. Both of those attributes work better in the slot.
DD is not a bad player, just doesn't seem to have a standout trait. He gets open more than I thought but Chism's footwork is much better which I think is the difference maker between the 2.
Both here next year on cheap money but I suspect Chism takes more of Pops reps and they move on from Pop after 2026.

Assuming they want to get another WR somewhere next offseason, who is the odd man out in 2026? Or are we set at WR for next season?

Pop could most possibly be in season trade target if someone offers a 4th rounder for him .

Nice story. Hollins was a good mentor for Chism and that hard work has paid off.

I'm sorry to lose Hollins to injury but I'm glad to see Chism get his shot and really capitalize on it.

Hopefully Chism continues that upward trajectory and helps us finish this season strong.

I was wondering that too. I have to guess it would be Pop. Some other team might want to trade for Boutte though if NE decides they don’t want to keep him long-term and his contract is running out. The type of WR that the Pats acquire would likely take Boutte’s role to some degree.

Yeah, Pop was my guess too. Boutte is an interesting option, especially if they think Kyle Williams can take that role and be even better. There's also the chance that things go really bad with Diggs' legal problems and they decide to move on.

I think they're looking less for a Boutte-type receiver and more of the Edelman, Welker, Diggs type, who can just constantly be moving the chains. But Drake plays a lot differently than Brady did.

I'm so glad I was wrong about Hollins. My reaction was more along the lines of meh, even though I've spent 20 years watching mcdaniels get the most out of wrs.

Hollins should be a captain next year. My boy campbell gonna be a captain soon too
