Are we mispronouncing Belichick?

Well duh....

But Belichick has never corrected anyone. So maybe he pronounces his name just as it is but his dad preferred pronouncing it as it was? Most important thing is that someone in the press conference asks Bill how he would like to be called.

If Americans have been pronouncing Scandinavian names incorrectly and Scandinavians have been pronouncing Americans names incorrectly the question is who is really incorrect or does it really matter?

Sincerely,

Antony 2046

Who cares. My last name is impossible to pronounce and spell. Everyone in the western world can spell Belichick now.

When we go to restaurants Mrs RW uses Seinfeld names.

Kramer
Klompus
Chote
Gack
Costanza

There's no right or wrong. It all depends how each person wants to be called. And however they want to be called should be respected and done.

Belly-Chick.

Well, that's not how you'd pronounce Bili?i? in Croatian, anyways. Both c's with diacritics above them are pronounced as ch's. Assuming the second syllable is stressed, that i would be pronounced closer to the i in "police" than in "sit" and would not morph to a schwa. So it's more like Bill-EECH-ich. But the name was anglicized and is pronounced the way it's pronounced; it's not like we're saying Brady like Brádaigh is correctly pronounced either.

be-LITCH-ick is how he pronounced it

I’ve talked about this in several posts over the past few years, but apparently no one gives a damn until the coach himself addresses it.

Bel-litch-eck is the correct pronunciation and he does have family members who use it that way, or at least he did prior to his fame/recognition. As of now, it seems as though he’s perfectly fine with how we’ve been saying it for many years.

You can call him Landry, and you can call him Brown. You can even call him Lombardi. Just don’t call him Shula (or a “snappy” dresser). Under no circumstances should you call him Parcells.

He is like many of us with European last names. I get so tired of people asking me how do you pronounce, I usually tell them either way is fine.. not that my last name is difficult, but can be pronounced the "french" way or the "american" way, I answer to both..

All that matters is how the immigration people at Ellis Island wanted it pronounced. That’s good enough for me.

Then why aren't they both spelled "ch"? Why spell them differently from "ch" and differently from each other?

Is there any way to see that full interview somewhere?

When they asked BB how he pronounces it, his response was, "It is what it is"

or maybe he mumbled something about not changing game plans the day before the game...
