Another reason why Sportstalk Radio has descended to the cesspool...

The reason for posting this is I run into PatsFans all over NE and they start to blab about something that is straight out of talk radio.. I sometimes, if I have the energy, ask them is that is what they heard on Sportstalk Radio.. invariably they agree.

Alex Guerrero..blah, blah, blah. Bob Kraft is cheap.. blah, blah, blah. Malcolm Bulter... blah, blah, blah. Malcolm Butler had a dustup with Stephen Belichick before the SB that is why he was benched... blah, blah, blah. They seldom miss a beat in their reporting of anything conceptually negative about the Pats.. and if not negative they try to turn it into something that is. Last spring in the Tom Vs. Time series, Bertram was listening to the voice inflection of Chopra to see is he could try to figure out "what he really meant".. all of sportstalk has turned into some sort of parody of what once was.

The biggest issue I have along with this specific issue is the attitude of Zolak who seldom defends the Patriots when Bertram goes on one of his idiotic conspiracy rants.. get a backbone Zo, you are better than that and you know better.

Have difficulty with those who look for conspiracy and other issues instead of enjoying this great stretch of excellent football.. enjoy the ride.
Agreed. Zolak seems intimidated by Bertrand.

Psst, come 'ere...I work in publishing and entertainment. I've been on dozens of radio/TV talk shows over the last 30 years. I know producers from talk shows and dozens of people who make a living as bloggers/reporters/producers, etc.

Talk radio is anger pornography, by design. The people on talk shows, sports or particularly politics, aren't there to inform. They're there to get listeners riled up, because riled up is "engaged." Your brain lights up as it would for porn.

If Mazz says something that seems incredibly stupid, part of the deal is to get you to HAVE TO call in to correct him. That's how they keep the lines lit up. You'll feel good showing off your superior knowledge...it's just human nature.

The formula is flawed, though. You can tease people in, but to keep them, you have to get more and more ridiculous. Alex Jones could not have been popular 25 years ago, because it took decades of ramping up the idiocy to get to someone as clearly absurd as him.

Felger and Mazz and all the rest want attention, because, well, that's WHY they get paid. While many people would prefer straight analysis, X's and O's, what gets people riled and engaged is anger.

It's the same formula on those stupid reality TV shows like "Housewives of Stupidville." These women are ready to throw down and start crying/screaming/throwing things over the most minor slights because of..."drama!"

Unfortunately, they're also teaching many younger viewers that such actions are acceptable and even normal. Politics is no different, and all of that is leading us to ****.

You could do a thread a day on F&M or any other "talk radio" show, and the happiest people about your thread are the hosts of that particular show.

It's a game.

Speaking of defamegate, since that time the Pats have a 40-9 regular season record and a 6-2 playoff record with 3 straight trips to the conference final, two SB appearances and a SB win.

Meanwhile, the Indiots and Ratbirds have a combined regular season record of 43-56 with zero playoff games.

As Jackie Gleason used to say...

Actually we've been to the Superbowl 3 times and won 2 since the sting operation conducted by the NFL in the AFC championship game.

They win so much that even I can't keep up with them.

Edit: I fixed my original post. Thanks.

It actually pisses me off as a Massachusetts guy living in New York, because Boston radio is definitely worse than New York’s. There’s a lot of obnoxious idiots in NY too, but there is a feeling of professionalism that when I visit Massachusetts now and listen to sports radio the amateurism and hackiness of it is really noticeable.
You’re joking, right? I admit that Boston sports radio has its problems, but it’s nothing like the cesspool that is WFAN in NY. Your local god, Mike Francesca, is a doddering old fool who doesn’t have the first clue what he is talking about.

As for professionalism..... well, get back to me when a Boston sports radio personality faces potentially 40 years in jail for running a Ponzi scheme.

Here’s another great example of NY sports radio “professionalism”:

Joe Benigno’s threesome come-ons in middle of WFAN’s frat-house lawsuit

When I was in NYC every week on biz I became a huge Mike & The Mad Dog fan.

The FAN is a shell of itself now

Oh I’m a big fan of Chris Russo (the Mad Dog). He is the best thing that ever existed in that market. But, as you mention, he’s no longer a NY guy. I listen to him regularly on Sirius/XM.

Here's a good reply to that exchange in OP...

" Um, felger.. you got it backwards... Where did you get your attitude?..

You're the hot mouth with a microphone.

You're the one who sucks. As in sucking the mic like it's the phallic symbol you are beholden to.

Exactly ... stroke that microphone. Polish it. It's perfectly symbolic of what you are all about"

Guarantee after multiple callers make this reference he'll make a switch to a square microphone that's not right in front of his face... Lol.

At this stage of my life, I try never to listen to ANYTHING that's negative or vitriolic. That includes talk radio, political ads, and, yes, the daily news. The only live TV I watch is NFL football. All my Patriots news starts from PatsFans and Mike Reiss.

I find that this strategy, though a little weird, seems to work for me. I'm smiling a lot more during each day.
My thoughts exactly. The writers are less prone to hyperbole. The audio cast is just trying to attract attention to themselves. I prefer "Get Up" and Time to Schein" to the local programming. I wish GMFB wasn't so silly because I would like to observe Kay Adams more often. It's just too inane. Oh well, back to LPGA and Women's tennis, not because I care about their game but because I like too watch the ladies because I am a chauvinist you know what.

After reading this thread I'm starting to believe that it's worth it to pay for Sirius radio.

Reiss - thoughtful takes
Kyed - generally quick, accurate reporting; funny when dealing with hawt-take morons
Howe - postgame stats for pressure, blocking, coverage
Miguel - for accurate cap and rules info

Lazar and couple others for tape breakdowns

That's about it for me. Outside of Patsfans, of course.

I agree with all of that and would add Matt Chatham to the list.

I was waiting for Dale Arnold to come on the air when WEEI turned on the station all those years ago, and I listened for many years between 10 & 6 (as I never liked the morning shows and had a hard time listening to Ted Sarandis). I would never say Boston sports radio was great, but it was certainly a great deal better than it is now, as I can't even listen to it for more than a couple of minutes. You'd think either one of the stations could put together a decent drive-time show at least, but between Merloni, Fauria, Felger and Massarotti it's just painful.

I’ve listened to those nitwits exactly twice since 2013 and those were the day after super bowl 49 and he day after super bowl 51 just because I wanted to hear them have to do a show where they couldn’t crap on the team.

The anger pornography description is spot on. It’s what drives sports talk, political talk, and the 24/7 cable news to the point you can barely have a rational discussion with someone about sports and politics without it decolving into a screaming match. I’ll pass, thanks.
