Andrew Luck Retires from NFL

Disagree, quitting is a pejorative term, and it doesn’t fit this situation because he’s not leaving for a similar career that may or may not have better opportunities, or giving up out of weakness. Luck is ending his career as a football player, and that’s called retiring.

We'll have to disagree. I have 3 examples where quitting is definitely not a pejorative. Try telling someone in AA that quitting is bad!

Gronk and Luck just recently quit playing football. And both were good choices for them.

No. I’m very clear.
Are you saying luck giving up football ranks high among the things you would label courageous?

No, I’m saying he retired. Courage has nothing to do with it, nor does “ quitting” , as he’s ending his career as a player.

And he quit.
You are making a ridiculously stupid deal out of me using a correct word that you incorrectly associate a negative connotation to. Can’t you be better than that?

We need to quit arguing.

Wait, that would be another example of positive quitting!

This is Andy walking away from an argument, umpteen posts later. LMAO

Yup rather than listen to the same ridiculous post over and over.

That’s not that unusual. The patriots only took five O-Lineman over the same period and none before the fourth round.

Just looking at their draft histories side by side the Colts expended more draft capital on the offensive line than the Patriots over that period overall, and in terms of higher round picks.

I'm surprised Luck didn't quit during his first preseason...I know one look at turd burglar Irsay and I'd have changed my citizenship to AnywhereElseOnThePlanet...

2007 - Brady sacked 21 times
2008 - Cassell sacked 47 times
2009 - Brady sacked 18 times
2016 - Brady sacked 15 times in 12 games
2016 - Brissett/JG sacked 9 times in 4 games (with fewer passes per game)

Have the Pats really had a great OL or is Brady a magician? How many games have the Pats faced an imposing defense yet Brady goes virtually untouched? (Chiefs/Ram as most recent examples) His ability to limit negative plays is one of his most underrated skills. Am not saying that the OL has not done well and they were particularly effective in the playoffs last year but switch out Brady for virtually anyone else and the picture is much different.

Players like Luck and Eli get to use the poor OL excuse when a good portion of it is their own style of play or inability to more quickly read the defense and get the ball out.

In case anybody hasn't seen this, former Pats OL Rich Ohrnberger responded to Luck's retirement with some perspective on what it's actually like trying to maintain a football career while coping with constant serious injury. It's worth clicking on the tweet to read the whole thread.

Good Stuff here from Onrnbrrger….

It's worth considering. Fundamentally. most of Luck's critics are operating under the assumption that he could have played 19 games of NFL football if he wanted to.

Given what we've seen of his injury history I just don't think that's certain, and I don't think Andrew thought it was certain either, or this probably doesn't come up

Also, for those criticizing the timing, that was taken out of Luck's hands. There was a leak. The game itself represented a deadline at which the team had asked Luck to tell them his decision. The timing of the announcement was supposed to be after the game. Somebody screwed up. Either in the Colts organization or the NFL office, neither of which are bastions of competence to begin with.

Either way, that decision wasn't Luck's to make. So taking that out on Luck in particular, who's the one guy who had no control over this, is particularly scummy IMHO

I have a feeling this retirement is going to change the NFL like how the Sterling recorded take did to the NBA. Gronk kinda scared me today with this talk as well. I just could not help it thinking about Robin Williams when I was listening to Gronk today. I had assumed Gronk was always happy no matter what but what I heard today has given me pause.

I don't know why and how he is getting all these support for quitting at his job.

Because it's a job. You sound like the sort of person who confuses the word 'job' with 'reason for living' or 'identity' or 'holy quest that should last your entire life.'

If someone wants to quit a job be it working at McDonalds, or being QB in the NFL or the world's highest paid porn star why wouldn't those of us in the working class support it? Providing, of course, that the person's fallback plan isn't mooching off of social programs when they could work otherwise which clearly isn't the case here...

I was confused by Gronk’s words today.
He mentioned how he did not have “fun” and felt “sad” after the Super Bowl because of the pain be suffered after the deep thigh bruise.
Was he not having fun through the season and playoffs until that point? Or was the pain so bad and long lasting that it took all the fun out of playing away? Did the “joy of life” come back after he healed?
It was definitely emotional watching him breakdown.
Not sure what the product he is selling is all about.
