DRAFT Ameer Speed - Round 6 - #214 Overall

He's almost 27 with horrible technique(s) This is a ST pick all the way. He's got hundreds of snaps there and can fly. Hopefully he realizes this is his last real shot and takes advantage
I'm getting 23 for him (10/11/99 DOB in multiple places). Listed with a 10.39 100m in HS, which might be the fastest in this entire class, but to his credit, he said it might've actually been closer to 10.5 because times were off a bit overall for that race. However, for his height 6'3.3" - same as DK, even that's impressive. Particularly small hands for a guy that size, and I wonder if that affects tackling. BB's probably looking for the potential heir for Slater (10.63 100m).

I like these late round flyers on these speedy CBs (IBolden 10.54 100m in HS at 6'2.2"). Sometimes it just takes the right teacher for it to finally click, and maybe one of them and therefore the Pats, can get lucky.

I wasn't paying attention to scouting before the last couple of years. How much of a project did y'all view UDFA speedster Jonathan Jones (10.63 same as Slater, 13.65 110H)? Good cover guy but too short? I might go through the archives to see what everyone thought.

These draft call videos always get me:

Yea I was exaggerating a little on his age lol but thought he was a little older

PLEASE PLEASE someone explain why this JAG (Speedy) was selected instead of Nick Kuntz??

We are in desperate need of a developmental TE as both Henry and Gesicki's contracts are up next yer.
This selection seems like a no brainer. Jets got him.....bet he has a much more successful career than Speedy.

Speed is gonna be 24 in the fall.

Well, let's see.
- Kuntz spent 3 years as a TE at Penn St. and yet his receiving totals were 3 receptions for 26 yards.
- Kuntz had to transfer to another D1 school that faced lesser competition before he did anything.
- Kuntz missed significant time his Senior year due to an ACL injury.
- Kuntz is a raw route runner who's wingspan made up for it in college. That likely won't be the case in the NFL
- Kuntz is a willing but lackluster blocker in both pass pro and run blocking due to his subpar playing strength

Maybe the Pats and O'Brien weren't wowed by the flashiness of his combine and relied on the limited tape of 18 games as a receiver that he has.

You only need a "developmental" TE if you have no plans on re-signing the guys you have. BTW, why can't Washington and/or Lumpkin be the "developmental" TE you so covet? Because they're not the latest shiny new object for you to croon over?

Our developmental TE is Johnny Lumpkin.

Dude's Not a CB; he's a Special olympics Teamer. Period. And a Horrible draft pick too.
So what you're saying is that he's a mere speed guy and destined for special teams. Got it.

Hopefully Slater can teach the kid how to run down the field as fast as he can on kickoffs and watch the ball fly into the endzone for a touchback or run down the field as fast as he can on punts and watch the returner make a fair catch.

Gotcha -- and he can use film of the 2nd Buffalo game to illustrate the wisdom of your prediction.

This is a rare opportunity to reprint John Ciardi's "On Flunking a Nice Boy Out of School." The bolded piece seems to me very Belichickian and speaks to our developmental TE by name!

I wish I could teach you how ugly

decency and humility can be when they are not

the election of a contained mind but only

the defenses of an incompetent. Were you taught

meekness as a weapon? Or did you discover,

by chance maybe, that it worked on mother

and was generally a good thing …

at least when all else failed … to get you over

the worst of what was coming. Is that why you bring

those sheepfaces to Tuesday?

They won’t do.

It’s ten month’s work I want, and I’d sooner have it

from the brassiest lumpkin in pimpledom, but have it,

than all these martyred repentences from you.

My first thought was that he was Slater's replacement, maybe even this year.

There is no need to cut our ST leader to make room for Speed.

We carry 5-7 STO players.

For example, Speed might bear out Mitchell.

I'm not sure Mitchell and Speed are really competing for the same spot on ST. Mitchell is 260 pounds. Speed is 209. I would guess they're manning different layers of the kick coverage teams.

I don’t see Speed replacing Slater. His tackling needs to improve. And he’s no where as smart as Slater.

His CB play is horrendous. With his size and athleticism am I allowed to ask how this is? My guess is it’s on him.

This has all the hallmarks of a wasted draft pick. Ameer Speed transferred to Michigan State from ballyhooed Georgia to augment one of the NCAA’s worst defensive secondaries and moved the needle not at all. He in fact competed with safety Angelo Grouse to be the weakest link. Captain Stone is correct to say he’s not a football player.

There’s a better candidate from the same team who is likely in a better position to be the next Matthew Slater.

The Patriots’ scouting department is by no means perfect. This wasted pick shows a flaw.
