Patriots Select Michigan State CB Ameer Speed in Round 6
Ian Logue
After taking their second wide receiver of the night four picks earlier in Demario Douglas, the Patriots shifted gears a bit with their 214th overall selection. They went ahead and took Michigan State defensive back Ameer Speed, adding some additional depth in their secondary.

6’3” and runs a 4.33/40….

Why was he available in the 6th???

Can he play special teams???
Yes, Brugler’s draft guide says he played over 500 ST snaps at Georgia (prior to his season as a starting CB at Michigan State), about 11 per game on average.

He's going to get a year of being on the field coached by Slate, then he can hopefully step into those shoes.

He looks super ordinary based on highlights posted in patriots.com.

I think this is a wasteful pick. Less than 5% chance he Makes the 53 or even PS.

I doubt that he sees the field anytime soon as a CB, but think he has a fighting chance to make the team on special teams.

He's almost 27 with horrible technique(s) This is a ST pick all the way. He's got hundreds of snaps there and can fly. Hopefully he realizes this is his last real shot and takes advantage

Ameer Speed arrived at MSU with much fanfare. He was a star in shorts. He briefly was a starter for the national champion Bulldogs, after all, before being injured.

Then in pads and helmet on game day he laid a turd.

He can ST, but you’re in trouble if he’s a CB.

OK, so he competes for one of belichick's 7 STO roster spots.

Jaylon.

Jones.

Cory.

Trice.

If a flyer is taken, a better more intriguing prospect from the same school (Michigan State), is a pure LT in Jarrett Horst, a 6’6” 305 free agent acquired by the Dolphins.

One of the best run blocking tackles, he is tenacious in the phone booth but limited athletically. He handled the Michigan DEs, albeit he looked to be handsy doing it one on one.

Jarrett Horst is a football player with some nfl upside. Amer Speed is not much of a football player with physical gifts and size.
