Almost Half Rebuilt

IMO, BB has multiple paths he may go down to get a QB:
  1. Trade for JG and move up to draft either Waddle or Smith at WR
  2. Trade up and draft Lance with Cam as bridge/mentor
  3. Stay put at 15 and draft Mac Jones
  4. Trade down and draft Mond in the 3rd

They’ve been upgraded
With whom got Butler upgraded?
I still see the need for third down DT specialist. I think Anderson more of a Guy replacement on early downs.

is everyone forgetting about Marqise Lee?

I could actually see Bill moving up in this one situation, if the guy he wants is high enough. His flurry of FA signings frees up draft assets to be used in a potential move up, and our #1 pick position at 15 puts us in a rare position to move into the top 10 relatively inexpensively. This would be a good time to use the assets BB meticulously hordes to go out and get your guy at QB. Of course that assumes that guy is out there but strategically, Bill has set the groundwork in place to allow him to move up successfully without hurting the product on the field.

Bill is spending like he is about to go the next few years with a QB on a rookie contract.

I think what we saw was the level of high end need Belichick felt he had and he decided to attack the market instead of letting the market come to him and risk missing out.
I don’t think it could have happened without targeting rosenhaus guys and that was clearly part of the plan.
I think when the contract come out they will be more backloaded than normal (the longer ones) based upon how the cap looks going forward and the fact that these were mostly prime age guys.

Seems to be a trend in the media today that BB's actions were reacting to the success of Brady in Tampa Bay.. but that is what sells newspapers and gets "hits" on online articles, most pundits imply that the Pats overpaid... not sure they overpaid, but what they did do is sign proven players who have skillsets that make this team better than is was on 3/15...

And they are not done yet... not confident in our QB situation and that may change soon..

Qb - hopefully jg if this sf looking at trubisky talk is true
I just don't see a Jimmy G reunion with the moves we've made already and having Cam already on the roster. If it's a trade, you're talking close to £30m in cap hit for two guys who'll both be in their 30s midway through the season both with injury history's - yikes.

Maybe..maybe if they cut him we might talk but with all the QB needy teams do you not think SF will find a trade partner somewhere? Chicago?

We have never been in a better position to trade up and draft the QBoTF, that should be the plan.

cam is $3.5 million base salary right? I would imagine Jimmy G would re-work his contract somewhat to come here. Cam would then be the backup. I still dont think he is springing free. The thing is, the niners can move on from Jimmy next offseason as well and face no consequences. So they can sign trubisky, draft someone, do whatever they want and have jimmy play for another year and then cut him.

To me though, Bills moves starting with signing cam, and spending big yesterday to address alot of question marks on this team leads be to believe he is

1. Expecting to have a QB on a rookie contract so he can spend more now.
2. expecting to expend multiple draft picks to move up and take a QB so he better use his FA money to address those positions.

I agree. Phil Perry likened the moves we made yesterday as if we already had that rookie QB on the roster and are spending big around that but instead it's Cams low contract. Well, we can still add that rookie QB contract.

We've already filled a lot of holes, re-sign some of guys like Andrews and we are in good shape. It's a deep receiver class that we could still add a guy in the later rounds, don't need to go for Pitts now with Smith here, added some defensive pieces. I don't see why we couldn't use our 1st and 2nd this year as part of an overall package to move up and take a QB if there's a guy we like. It makes sense.

Overall I like the moves. Anderson, Godchaux and Agholor are all guys I pegged at one time or another as fits in this system. The Judon move blew me away, I was not expecting that at all.

There is still a ton left to be sorted out. It seems Judon and Smith are the only guranteed big money deals. The rest contain some amount of Monopoly money. How much are Godchaux, Anderson, Agholor really makin? If they are on Cam-style incentive laden deals, then there may be more to come.

The CB position is now worth watching. My gut feeling is that one out of Gilmore and Jackson is gone. Has Jackson even been tendered yet?

Butler played half the snaps, he wasn’t a 3rd down specialist.

DEFENSE

A) The Front Seven/Six has been completely rebuilt.
1) We could add Van Noy
2) we could add Butler, Guy, Simon, or Calhoun
3) Allen could be cut (or we could wait until camp)

B) The secondary has 2 question marks: JC Jackson and Gilmore
4) We've replaced Jason McCourty with Mills.
5) Gilmore seems likely to be traded.
6) Jackson needs a 1st rounder, or a long-term deal. Someone might pay a 1st essentially forcing us to draft a CB high.

BOTTOM LINE
Although I 'd love to see us add Van Noy, the big question mark is at starting CB.
BB might not value JC as much as we. He might view him as an excellent #2 cb who’ll command major $ next year. In that case, I wonder if he’ll put a 2nd round tender and get a good pick. Not advocating, thinking out loud.

About Half Way Done

PositionSource
QB (2)Cam Newton, draft
CenterDavid Andrews
OL Depthdraft
Y TEJonnu Smith
X WRNelson Agholor
Z WR (2)Kendrick Bourne, draft
NTDavon Godchaux
DT/DE (2)Lawrence Guy, Henry Anderson, Deatrich Wise
DE/OLBMatthew Judon
ILBFA, draft
CB (2)Jackson, Mills (assuming McCourty gone)

Butler played half the snaps, he wasn’t a 3rd down specialist.
Butler played early downs mostly due to injuries from our early down guys or when we face heavy rushing attacks.
Still need an DT pass rusher type I would say if he doesn't get resigned

It is probably wise.

Could be Yeah but this looks like a downgrade from butler. Wise did not look that dominating as Butler did in the second half of the season to me. Maybe Anderson can provide some Juice there idk

They could probably find a way to fit him in but with hunter henry too now im wondering, that will be hard. No idea what were doing at qb now lol

These moves don’t make us a playoff team yet. Still have work to do.

We were 7-9 against the toughest schedule in the league last year. Next year the schedule should be easier and this team is definitely better.

Pretty close. If everyone who opted out played and contributed, were they a 9 win team? With what was added thus far, do they pick up 2 more wins? Yes, I know Cam sucks. I am of the opinion that Smith, Henry, Aghalor and Bourne upgrade this offense dramatically. Add Godchaux and Henry stuffing the run and Judon setting the edge and pass rushing and they are much improved on that side of the ball. ST are already good.

I think you've picked up at least 3 wins, and now you're in the hunt. Still a long way to go to compete with KC and TB in January and February, but they've turned the corner.
