1 (not at all) to 10 (completely), how certain are you Mac Jones can lead this team for 5 years?

I’ll say 6. That’s close to my ceiling for a reined-in rookie with 8 games of NFL experience who is doing well in this system so far. I’m sure he’ll get even better.

And we can say now that yes they picked the right QB in the draft.

I thought he was the guy after September, he's only going to get better albeit with a few bad games thrown in here ands there.
Even a certain QB who now plays in TB had a few stinkers his first year here. ( I am NOT comparing Jones to Brady) but Brady's 2001 ended up as 18/12 TD/Int ratio. Halfway thru the season ( roughly) Jones is 9/6 about the same... Give him some time to grow. We have been spoiled by having a QB who had roughly 300 games of experience reading defenses going to a rookie who has now started 8 games.. I am optimistic, ..

If Herbert keeps playing like that and putting up a 50% completion rate he wont be the guy anymore
Herbert seems to play like that only against Bill. His two worst games of his career were against us. He has to hope that Bill will not coach for another 10 years.

Besides being off, it seemed Mac had a different mindset yesterday.
Weeks 1-7, willing to absorb a hit to get last second pass off
Yesterday, releasing ball too soon.
Fear of Bosa?
Coaching instructions? Too soon better than INT?

Could have used a bonafide slot WR yesterday. So little separation on short throws

Speaking of Bosa, NE RBs chipped him all day including a few punishing shots

He's not getting much time at all in the pocket. Every week it's the same thing...Mac goes back to pass and within a second there's a defender barreling down on him, particularly from the left side.

Mac is the guy. They can definitely win with him. I don't think he cares about anything except winning. He is the steal of the draft.

Mac is leading a flawed team to playoff contention as a rookie. Is there really any debate here?

I'm convinced he is the "guy"..

Yesterday against the Chargers he was off, however still maintained control of the game, a huge stat from yesterday was time of possession which the Pats won 33 to 26...
I agree, it's a huge mark of a top QB that they can be off their game and still control the game, especially against another high level QB. I wasn't expecting that level of skill as a field general from Jones for another 1-2 years.

I am fairly confident (7 or 8) that he is going to be the guy for a long time.

What impresses me the most about Mac is that, even when playing badly, he finds a way to rebound and make things happen. Against Dallas for example, terrible pick six. Comes back the next series and throws a long TD. Yesterday, he struggled for most of the second quarter. Rebounded after that and had that great drive to kill the clock and extend the lead to 10 points. Outside of the Saints game, he did not have a COMPLETE stinker.

To me, that's the most important thing, how do you respond to adversity. All signs point to Mac being able to handle adversity very well.

Is he perfect? No. Is he going to be the best in the league? Probably not. Will he be good enough for us to be serious contenders for a long time? I think so.

As good as he has been, I feel he has tons more to show . Every week he is just soaking it up.
I know that one pass doesn't mean much, but that throw to Algholor was about as quick a release and as accurate a pass as I've seen him make. I think the future at QB looks good.

5 or 6, but too early to say.

Based on the OPs criteria I don't know how you don't pick 9 or 10. I've seen way more than enough to determine that he's our guy for the next few years. Still a lot to be seen to determine if that means playoff and ultimately SB success. But no reason to think we will be looking for something else at Q for at least a few years.

Mac: 11/10

OC: 0/10
Just to let you know, not that you will care, I am placing you on ignore although I prefer not ignoring anyone's input. This thread title was a straightforward question on a fans opinion on Mac, and again you spew your poison about the Patriots Offensive Coordinator.
It is such a shame that you taint your football knowledge and opinions here by having to constantly state your mandatory derogatory comments about Josh McDaniels.
You refer to him as McD, the John Carroll roommate, the Denver'10 and St. Louis 11 failed experiments, the OC and over recent weeks he is now demoted to the oc. Maybe you could make oc even smaller in you font, lol.
It is almost obligatory for you to take dig at the man. It is quite an obsessive and wholly unhealthy state of mind.
Any of the man's perceived failings are constantly put up in bright lights whilst his achievements and input are left in the dark in your world. I really cannot understand how this useless Patriot organisation and flop of a HC cannot see that Josh McDaniels is a complete waste of space, a man who brings nothing to the table and offers zilch to team goals and accomplishments.
If you keep going on your current trend, the man will be blamed as the cause of all natural disasters. He could have been the instigator of Covid too maybe. Any historical natural disaster or worldwide disease was most likely started or caused by the man's ancestors.
I have requested previously, as have others, in a mostly courteous manner, for you to ease off on your witch hunt as it takes from what other valuable content and insights you bring to the board but you are a lost cause in this regard.
The fact that I am more of a "lurker" rather than a poster here and yet I feel obliged to write this post should give you some indication or small insight into how absolutely annoying your incessant snide remarks and constant attacks are received.
Furthermore, even if your opinion on Josh McDaniels is 100% correct, why would you want to reference it in just so many different Threads? It just becomes like listening to a broken record.
Please move the needle, for the good of the board and more importantly for you own peace of mind.

I've got him at a 9. I agree with those saying they need to see him perform in the playoffs before you say he's the guy, but I'm grading on what he's had the chance to show thus far. There are some physical improvements he can make (likely in the offseason), and he needs to see more defenses to really get a good grasp on the different ways teams will attack him. But the things you can't teach: work ethic, leadership, respect of his teammates, toughness, etc he's shown he has through these first 8 weeks.

Some upcoming "firsts" for him that will be good tests:

1) Back to back road games for the first time this year against Carolina.

2) Facing the Bills the second time, to see whether that defense adjusts to him better than he adjusts to them. Got a taste of that with the Jets game (and he passed with flying colors), but even with their win over the Bengals, it's still the Jets so I'm saying he held serve there for the time being.

3) Playing in Miami, which has been a house of horrors, even with Brady.

Pass those, hopefully get into the dance, then we can see what the kid has on the big stage.

I'd be really surprised if he isn't the guy.. I'd got to go 9/10. He seems to have a great mental makeup to play QB for the Pats. I didn't know he would play as tough as he does either.. The guy really knows how to take a sack when he isn't going to make it. My concern was always the arm strength and speed.

But now I think Mac was underrated physically coming out of school to fit an ESPN narrative.

All this stuff about his ceiling was entirely overblown.. The guy can run some - he isn't Justin Fields or Lamar Jackson running the ball. And he can his arm talent is underrated as well. He can make 40, 50 yard passes without much of a problem. His arm talent is right there with guys like Watson or Burrow..

Even now when you see 'analysts' talk about Mac they always talk about his physical limitations because of the media push against the guy and his dad bod picture.. But you have to be thankful to the 49ers. They bit on the ESPN hype and gifted him to us. Also they saved us from Jimmy G who would be just good enough to divide the Patriots forever. I love the 49ers now as I credit them with Tom, saving us from Jimmy G and souring teams on Mac Jones..

Herbert seems to play like that only against Bill. His two worst games of his career were against us. He has to hope that Bill will not coach for another 10 years.

The Ravens gave him fits too. He played about as bad against them as he did yesterday.

I am beginning to wonder if he can read disguised rushes and coverages. In fact, some in the media are asking today if teams have figured out how to defend Herbert.

I would give Jones about an 8-9 range. Whether he will be a top 5 or 10 QB is still up in the air, but he is likely to be the the Pats' starting QB for the next five years.
